Ok, I've run old versions of spysweeper and adaware and also spybot, which I just updated. Spysweeper keeps popping up and complaining about these being added to startup:

exp.exe
apihu.exe
javasr32.exe
kavsvc.exe
ipog.exe

They're might be couple more I can't remember. Also, there's something trying to open a ie window all of the time, even when there's no connection. Spysweeper opens and asks whether to reject the change, which I do. Here's a hijackthis log.

Hello bobw and welcome to TomCoyote. :wavey:

You have a large amount of infections on this computer so it may take a while to remove them all. I recommend only using the Internet to come to this site or to download items as instructed to prevent furthur infection.

You may want to print out these instructions or save them to your desktop as a text file with Notepad because we will be restarting into Safe Mode later on in the fix and you might not be able to access the Internet.
  • I need you to disable SpySweeper until after the computer is clean as it will interfer with the registry changes we will need to do.
    • Open it click >Options over to the left then >program options >Uncheck "load at windows startup".
    • Over to the left click "shields" and uncheck all there.
    • Uncheck "home page shield".
    • Uncheck 'automaticly restore default without notifiction".
  • Please go to Add/Remove Programs and remove the following entries (you need an active internet connection while removing these) :
    Web search toolbar
    Win-tools easy installer

  • Prepare CWShredder for use:
    • Download CWShredder.
    • Save CWShredder.exe to a convenient location.
    • Please do not do anything with it yet.
  • Prepare AboutBuster for use:
    • Download AboutBuster.
    • Unzip the contents of AboutBuster.zip and an AboutBuster directory will be created.
    • Navigate to the AboutBuster directory and double-click on AboutBuster.exe.
    • Click "Update" to begin the update process.
    • If any updates exist please download them by clicking "Download Update".
    • You should not run the program yet so click "Exit".
  • Prepare cwsserviceremove.reg for use:
    • Download cwsserviceremove.zip.
    • Unzip the contents of cwsserviceremove.zip (cwsserviceremove.reg) to your desktop.
    • Delete the cwsserviceremove.zip folder.
    • Please do not do anything with it yet.
  • Reconfigure Windows XP to show hidden files:
    • Click Start. Open My Computer.
    • Select the Tools menu and click Folder Options. Select the View Tab.
    • Under the Hidden files and folders heading select "Show hidden files and folders".
    • Uncheck the "Hide protected operating system files (recommended)" option.
    • Uncheck the "Hide file extensions for known file types" option.
    • Click Yes to confirm. Click OK.
  • Disable the offending service.
    • Go to Start->Run and type Services.msc then hit Ok
    • Scroll down and find the service called : Network Security Service
    • When you find it, double-click on it. In the next window that opens, click the Stop button, then click on properties and under the General Tab, change the Startup Type to Disabled. Now hit Apply and then Ok and close any open windows. If you don´t find this service listed go ahead with the next steps.
Boot into Safe Mode:
Restart your computer and immediately begin tapping the F8 key on your keyboard.
If done right a Windows Advanced Options menu will appear. Select the Safe Mode option and press Enter.
To return to normal mode just restart your computer as you normally would.
  • Run CWShredder:
    • Double-click on CWShredder.exe.
    • Click "Fix ->" and click "OK" at the prompt.
    • CWShredder will scan and clean your system of CWS files.
    • Click "Next->" and then "Exit".
  • Remove the offending service:
    • Double-click on cwsserviceremove.reg you downloaded earlier.
    • When it asks you to merge the information to the registry click "Yes".
  • Run AboutBuster and save the logs:
    • Browse to where you saved AboutBuster and run AboutBuster.exe.
    • Click "Begin Removal" to start the scan.
    • It will begin to scan your computer for malicious files. If it asks if you would like to do a second pass, allow it to do so.
    • When it has finished, click Exit. A copy of the log will be saved in the AboutBuster folder. Click OK.
  • Clean out temporary files:
    • Start | Run | type cleanmgr | OK
    • Let it scan your system for files to remove.
    • Make sure Temporary Files, Temporary Internet Files, and Recycle Bin are the only things checked.
    • Click "OK" to remove them.
    • Click "Yes" to confirm the deletion.
  • Restart your computer normally to return to normal mode.
  • Free TrendMicro Housecall scan:
    • You'll need to use Internet Explorer or Netscape browsers to run this scan.
    • Vist the TrendMicro Housecall website.
    • Select your country from the drop-down list and click "Go".
    • Choose "Yes" at the ActiveX Security Warning prompt.
    • Please wait while the Housecall engine is updated.
    • Select the drives to be scanned by placing a check in their respective boxes.
    • Check the "Auto Clean" box.
    • Click "SCAN" in order to begin scanning your system.
    • Please be patient while Housecall scans your system for malicious files.
    • If not auto-cleaned, remove anything it finds.
    • Click "Close" to exit the Housecall scanner.
    • Choose "Yes" at the HouseCall message prompt.
  • Prepare your reply:
    • Please post a fresh HijackThis log as a reply to this thread.
    • Please post the AboutBuster log.
    • Please note any complications you had.
Thanks so much for your help!

Ok, I did everything you said, altough I couldn't find Win-tools easy installer on add/remove programs.

Also, Housecall couldn't delete these files in C:\WINDOWS\SYSTEM32 because it said they were in use:

e6f1873b.dll
stlb2.dll
sysmonnt.exe
winupdt.exe

Should I delete them?

Here is the Aboutbuster log:

Thanks again for your help.
We made a little progress with that fix, now we'll try to hit the majority of the infections. :)

Yes you can delete those four files from the Housecall scan.

You may want to print out these instructions or save them to your desktop as a text file with Notepad because we will be restarting into Safe Mode later on in the fix and you might not be able to access the Internet.

Please download the trial version of Ewido Security Suite here:
http://www.ewido.net/en/download/
Install it, and update the definitions to the newest files. Do NOT run a scan yet.

Please download Nailfix from here:
http://www.noidea.us/easyfile/file.php?dow…050515010747824
Unzip it to the desktop but please do NOT run it yet.

  • Run AboutBuster and save the logs:
    • Browse to where you saved AboutBuster and run AboutBuster.exe.
    • Click "Begin Removal" to start the scan.
    • When it has finished, AboutBuster will open a 'Scan Completed' window. Click OK.
    • Another information window will open. Click on Exit.
    • AboutBuster will inform you that a log has been created.
  • Double-click on Nailfix.cmd.
    • Your desktop and icons will disappear and reappear, and a window should open and close very quickly — this is normal.
  • Then please run Ewido, and run a full scan.
    • Save the logfile from the scan.
  • Fix with HijackThis:
    • Please run HijackThis, click Scan, and put a check mark beside:

      F2 - REG:system.ini: Shell=Explorer.exe C:\WINDOWS\Nail.exe
    • Close all open windows except for HijackThis and click Fix Checked.
    • Please post the log from the Ewido scan
    • Please note any complications you had.
Everything went ok. The only scan on Ewido that produced a logfile I could find was the scan memory tab. I included it. I hope it's what you need.

When I start the computer now, a rundll error pops up telling me that D0CE0C16B1.dll can't be opened because the specified module can't be found or something. Also, Ewido starts up with the computer. It pops up with problems it has found, and I just click the option to fix it. Should I disable Ewido for any further processes here?

With all other programs and browsers closed, click fix checked.

Step 3
Go to Add/Remove Programs and remove the following items (if found):

CashToolbar
Web Toolbar
BrowserPal

Step 4
Please set your computer to show all files.
  • Double-click My Computer.
  • Click the Tools menu, and then click Folder Options.
  • Click the View tab.
  • Clear "Hide file extensions for known file types."
  • Under the "Hidden files" folder, select "Show hidden files and folders."
  • Clear "Hide protected operating system files."
  • Click Apply, and then click OK.
You will need to reverse this process when all steps are done.

Step 5
Please delete the following files/folders:

C:\WINDOWS\System32\winupdt.exe << File Only
C:\WINDOWS\System32\sysmonnt << File Only
C:\WINDOWS\System32\aircity.exe << File Only

C:\Program Files\SurfSideKick 3 << Whole Folder
C:\PROGRA~1\COMMON~1\WinTools << Whole Folder

You'll need to search for these files with Explorer to delete. They may be in C:\WINDOWS\system32\ or C:\WINDOWS\
(Start > Search > All files and folders > More advanced options place a check in the first three boxes)

srsgmgr.exe
D0CE0C16B1.dll

If you have any problem deleting these items, reboot into Safe Mode (tap F8 during bootup, use arrow keys to select Safe Mode, then hit 'enter') and try again.

Step 6
I couldn't find any information on this file. Do you know what it is? Right click on the file and choose 'properties', than on the 'version' tab note what the "Company" and "Version" are.

C:\WINDOWS\System32\svcvid.exe

If you still are unsure what this file is, please submit it to the following links for a scan.
http://www.kaspersky.com/scanforvirus
http://virusscan.jotti.org/

Step 7
Reboot normally and scan with HijackThis. Post the new log as a reply to this thread.
Please let us know of any complications you had and how the computer is behaving.
Wow, thanks! The machine's running great. No more weird messages about failing to start suspicious-sounding dlls, or anything. I couldn't find aircity.exe or the wintools folder or that scvcid.exe file. I think Ewido got it. We may never know what it was . . . Oh, and that last entry to delete on the hijackthis log, the wintools for IE service one, wasn't there.

I'm looking over that post about Coyote's Installed Protections. Is it worth getting the full Ewido package, too? I remember looking over this site once and seeing a post about free firewall downloads. Is that still somewhere?

Anyway, my mom and I heartily thank you for clearing this all up.
Here's another hijackthis log

Your new log appears clean. :)

Reset and Re-enable your System Restore to remove bad files that have been backed up by Windows. The files in System Restore are protected to prevent any programs changing those files. This is the only way to clean these files: (You will lose all previous restore points which are likely to be infected.)

1. Right-click My Computer, and then click Properties.
2. On the System Restore tab, put a check mark in the 'Turn Off System Restore' check box.
3. Click OK, and then click Yes.
4. Restart the computer.
5. Repeat steps 1 - 2, this time clearing the box beside 'Turn Off System Restore', click 'OK'.

I suggest that you get these programs to help keep the computer clean:

Spyware Blaster - Blocks bad ActiveX items from installing on your computer. Spyware Blaster runs silently in the background.
SpywareGuard - Real-time protection from spyware installation attempts
ie-spyad - Puts over 8,000 bad URLs into your restricted sites for Internet Explorer.
Google Toolbar - Blocks many unwanted pop-ups in Internet Explorer.
Firefox - 'Safer' alternative to the Internet Explorer web browser.

Here are two very good and free malware scanners:

Spybot Search and Destroy 1.4
AdAware SE v1.06
Set-up Instructions for Spybot S&D; and Adaware SE

If you have them already, check to make sure that they are the newest version.

Update these regularly.

You may also want to read "How did I get infected in the first place" to learn how to better secure your computer.

Be sure to keep Windows and your Anti-virus updated.
Thanks again for all your help! One more quick question. This computer has three XP accounts. Spywareblaster appears to be working in all of them, but I can't tell if Spywareguard and MRUblaster are working in all of them, too. Do they both start up automatically, or do I need to install them individually in each one, like with Spyad?
It does appear that SpywareGuard and MRUblaster will need to be installed under each users account. They only show up in the startup folder and not in the global startup which would be for all users.
