Guess I'm infected, and have been for about a month. Here's what I know.

Getting popups a couple times a day directing me to various websites. I'm suspicious of three files in my SYSTEM32 directory, c_0ILT.dll (BHO), jkkjh.exe, and pmnlkii.dll.

Installed SpySweeper, scanned, but it didn't flag anything, or fix anything.

From some quick looks at this forum, I think you'll recognize my problem. Here's the HiJackThis log.

Thanks in advance.

Hello and welcome to the TC Forum.

Please download ATF Cleaner by Atribune.
Download - ATF Cleaner»

Double-click ATF-Cleaner.exe to run the program.
Under Main choose: Select All
Click the Empty Selected button.

(If you use FireFox or the Opera browser
To keep saved passwords, click No at the prompt.)

It's normal after running ATF cleaner that the PC will be slower to boot the first time..

Download VundoFix.exe to your desktop.
  • Double-click VundoFix.exe to run it.
  • Click the Scan for Vundo button.
  • Once it's done scanning, click the Remove Vundo button.
  • You will receive a prompt asking if you want to remove the files, click YES.
  • Once you click yes, your desktop will go blank as it starts removing Vundo.
  • When completed, it will prompt that it will shutdown your computer, click OK.
  • Turn your computer back on. Please reboot your computer.
  • Please post a new HijackThis logusing the Add Reply Button below.
Please post the contents of C:\vundofix.txt and a new HijackThis log.
Thanks for the prompt response. Unfortunately, this didn't go so well. I printed out your instructions and downloaded ATF and Vundo. Ran ATF, no problem. Ran Vundo, found file, but when it tried to delete, I got this window/message:

C:\WINNT\system32\c_0ILT.dll could not be deleted. VundoFix will load on reboot to attempt removal. Please Click Remove Vundo once your computer has rebooted.

A moment later this was followed by this window/message:

Cannot import C:\winnt\VundoFix.reg: Error opening the file. There may be a disk or file system error.

Then a message saying click OK to shutdown, which I did.

After reboot and logon, Vundo came up with no files listed. I clicked remove and got my desktop.

I tried it again, and got the same sequence. The first time, SpySweeper was running (but I allowed the change). The second time I had previously shutdown SpySweeper and set it NOT to load at startup.

Log files are as follows:

Download Pocket Killbox
http://www.atribune.org/downloads/KillBox.exe
If you already have Killbox first ensure it is this version !.

Then double-click on the killbox.exe program.

Start Killbox and click on Tools->Delete Temp Files.
Then select the option labeled Delete on reboot.

Do not close killbox, and open notepad, by clicking on Start, then Run, and typing notepad.exe and pressing the OK button.

When notepad is open, copy and paste the following bolded text into the notepad screen. You do this by highlighting each of the below bolded filenames and then pressing Control-C on your keyboard. Then click on the open notepad windows and press Control-V to paste the contents into the notepad.

C:\WINNT\system32\jkkjh.exe
C:\WINNT\system32\c_0ILT.dll
C:\WINNT\system32\pmnlkii.dll

Return to Killbox, go to the File menu and select Paste from Clipboard.

Still in Killbox, click the red-and-white Delete File button. Click Yes at the Delete on Reboot prompt. Click No at the Pending Operations prompt.

If your computer does not restart automatically, please restart it manually

"copy/paste" a new log file into this thread.
Also please describe how your computer behaves at the moment.
Ok, lots has happened. Right after my last post, this little pest aggressively tried to download an "antivirus" scanning program. I kept clicking the upper right hand corner "X" in the download windows to stop it, but it appeared to continue. So I immediately disabled the network connection. And at the same time Norton Antivirus flagged the download file as containing a virus and quarantined it. I shut down the machine, went home, and waited for your response.

Later, per your new post, started up again and ran Pocket Pillbox. I clicked YES at the Delete Prompt, but did not get any Pending Operations prompt. The machine just rebooted normally. I logged in, everything appears normal. Then Norton AntiVirus popped up saying pmnlkii.dll was the TROJAN.ABWIZ virus, that it just tried to run, and that Norton AntiVirus just deleted it.

A check of system32 directory shows that pmnlkii.dll and jkkjh.exe appear to be gone. c_0ILT.dll remains.

Further, as I am typing this, up pops a IE window for WinAntiVirus Pro. So I guess we are not done yet. Logs follow.

Close ALL windows and browsers except HijackThis and click "Fix checked"

Reboot and "copy/paste" a new HijackThis log file into this thread.

Also please describe how your computer behaves at the moment.
I did as instructed. Hijackthis ran with no problems. The entries no longer appear in the Hijackthis log. Computer behaving normally. I haven't had any pop-ups since the c_0ILT.dll file got deleted, just prior to my last post.

Going through the fix was interesting, and I learned some stuff. My deep gratitude to you for your time and help. I assume you also have a day job? Give me info so that I can donate. You've guys have earned it. I'll remain a member since, unfotunately, the odds are that I'll be back with another infection someday.

Again, my thanks for your help.

Log follows.

You need to create a new Clean restore point.

Note: This will remove all previous Restore Points

Turn off System Restore:

On the Desktop, right-click My Computer.
Click Properties.
Click the System Restore tab.
Check Turn off System Restore.
Click Apply, and then click OK.

Restart your computer, turn it back on.

On the Desktop, right-click My Computer.
Click Properties.
Click the System Restore tab.
Remove the Check Turn off System Restore.
Click Apply, and then click OK.

Double-click My Computer.
Click the Tools menu, and then click Folder Options.
Click the View tab.
Check "Hide file extensions for known file types."
Under the "Hidden files" folder, Uncheck "Show hidden files and folders."
Check "Hide protected operating system files."
Click Apply, and then click OK.

If you dont have any programs like these, I would recommend that you get them.
Spywareblaster,
Spywareguard.
IE Spyads
They will add 1000's of sites to your resticted zone and block some hijacks from happening.

Also get a FREE FIREWALL and FREE ANTI VIRUS if you need one.

It is critical to have both a firewall and anti virus to protect your system.

Keep your system up to date and run Adaware & Spybot, once a week works, and hopefully you will be ok from here on. Both are available below.

Safe Surfing. :D

I would also suggest you read this:
So how did I get infected in the first place?
