I have tried a number of things to get rid of the hijack that has invaded my computer. I have run updated versions of AdAware SE, Spybot and CWshredder in both normal and safe modes. After the invasion I installed the SPybot Tea-Timer. Nothing has worked. I would greatly appreciate any help I can get. Here is my Hijack This log. Thanks in advance…

Hi mjm_hj, and welcome to TomCoyote!

I'm 'KotaGuy, and I will be helping you with you HijackThis log.

You may want to print this out for reference during the fix.

Can I get you to disable TeaTimer for now. It will interfere with what we need to do. You can reenable it when your system is clean.

You have the latest version of VX2. Download L2mfix from one of these two locations:

http://www.atribune.org/downloads/l2mfix.exe
http://www.downloads.subratam.org/l2mfix.exe

Save the file to your desktop and double click l2mfix.exe. Click the Install button to extract the files and follow the prompts, then open the newly added l2mfix folder on your desktop. Double click l2mfix.bat and select option #1 for Run Find Log by typing 1 and then pressing enter. This will scan your computer and it may appear nothing is happening, then, after a minute or 2, notepad will open with a log. Copy the contents of that log and paste it into this thread.

IMPORTANT: Do NOT run option #2 OR any other files in the l2mfix folder until you are asked to do so!
KotaGuy, Thanks very much for responding. While waiting for a kind soul such as yourself to reply, I was hunting around other threads and found someone with a very similar problem. I followed the directions in that thread using the l2mfix.exe and I was able to kill off the hijack. I have been hijack-free since Friday, so I think I am in the clear (my HijackThis log has been clean, no pop-ups, no more mysteriously name-chaning .exe files, etc.). It sure would be nice to find some way to nail these hijackers. I can't believe that legitimate web sites are paying these scoundrels for click-throughs! At this point I have updated versions of SpyBot, AdAware and Spyblaster (so my hosts file should be solid). I used an option in SpyBot to set my hosts file read-only. I am also running Tea-Timer and my Norton AV is up-to-date (after a full system scan the other day). Can you think of any other things I can do to prevent further invasions? Thanks again for your response. We are lucky to have folks like you helping with all of these knuckeheads out there attacking our systems! mjm
Good to hear you got the issue resolved! I would like to see a new log… just to be sure :P As far as anything else to help prevent this… check out SpywareGuard and IE-SPYAD from the links in my sig. As well as the Understanding Spyware and How did I get infected link. A couple more tools and some good info for ya. Other than that, keep your protection programs updated, scan often and… Surf Safe!
OK, here is the latest log. I thought I had killed off that ikpn.exe task but it is back again so maybe I still have something. I am not seeing any pop-ups but I don't think that task should be there (I read somewhere that they are spoofing a Kaspersky antivirus task, and I do not have the Kaspersky software). Let me know what you think.

Thanks!

Thanks for posting the new log. The ikpn.exe file is the one I wanted to make sure you had gotten rid of :D

Disable Spybot's TeaTimer, it will interfere with what we have to do.

If you haven't done this already, please make sure no files are hidden. To do this:

1. Click Start.
2. Open My Computer.
3. Select the Tools menu and click Folder Options.
4. Select the View Tab.
5. Under the Hidden files and folders heading select Show hidden files and folders.
6. Uncheck the Hide protected operating system files (recommended) option.
7. Click Yes to confirm.
8. Click OK.

Hit Ctrl+Alt+Delete to bring up the Task Manager. End Task ikpn.exe.

Run and scan with HijackThis. With all other browsers and windows closed, place a check beside the following and Fix:

The other 016's are an optional fix and will reinstall if they are needed.

Boot into Safe Mode, to do this:

1. Reboot your computer.
2. Tap the F8 button as your computer is booting to bring you to the Advanced Options Menu.
3. Select Safe Mode and press Enter.

Search for and delete this file:

C:\WINDOWS\system32\ikpn.exe

Empty your Recycle Bin. Empty your Temp files, Start>Run, type in cleanmgr, hit Enter. Let it scan the C: drive. Make sure the first three option are checked, let it clean them.

Reboot Windows normally. Do a scan with HijackThis and post the new log please.
OK, here we go…

I did the HijackThis fixes as instructed. There was no ikpn.exe process to kill, either before or after the safe boot. I have searched for this process before but never found it. I did find the ikpn.exe file in SYSTEM32, but I could not delete it because it was in use. I deleted it with Killbox (hope that was OK). There is no process ikpn.exe, but the file is in use, so the process name must be different/hidden?

Here is the current HijackThis log:

Hmmm… ok… this may be a Qoologic infection.

Download FindQoologic-Narrator. Save it to your Desktop.

Extract (unzip) the files inside into their own folder called FindQoologic. Open the FindQoologic folder. Preferable to your desktop. Locate and double-click the Find-Qoologic.bat file to run it. Wait until a text opens, post it in a reply to your thread.
Thanks… OK, here is the test file PLEASE NOTE THAT ALL FILES FOUND BY THIS METHOD ARE NOT BAD FILES, THERE MIGHT BE LEGIT FILES LISTED AND PLEASE BE CAREFUL WHILE FIXING. Thanks for posting the log.

If you haven't already, download Pocket Killbox.

Start Killbox and click on Tools->Delete Temp Files. When that finishes, copy and paste each of the following lines into the "Full Path of File to Delete" box in Killbox, and click the red button with the white X on it after each. Keep track of any files it tells you either could not be found or could not be deleted, as you'll need those later. Enter into the text field these lines:

C:\WINDOWS\NONG.DLL
C:\WINDOWS\MZOK.DLL
C:\WINDOWS\System32\SRIG.DLL
C:\WINDOWS\System32\DUKA.DLL
C:\WINDOWS\System32\IKPN.EXE
C:\WINDOWS\System32\DMNO.EXE
C:\WINDOWS\System32\WKAV.DAT
C:\WINDOWS\UNADBEH.EXE
C:\Documents and Settings\All Users\Start Menu\Programs\Startup\RIKT.EXE

For the files that it either couldn't find or couldn't delete, in the killbox again this time, put a mark next to "Delete on Reboot". Copy and paste each file into the file name box, then click the red button with the X after each. It will ask you if you want to reboot each time you click it, answer NO until after you've pasted the last file name, at which time you should answer Yes.

Reboot if it doesn't do so automatically. Post a new qoologic log in your next reply.
Thanks for your last post. I did the killbox actions as you described (I had to do the SRIG file as a delete on reboot. Here is the latest Qoologic log: PLEASE NOTE THAT ALL FILES FOUND BY THIS METHOD ARE NOT BAD FILES, THERE MIGHT BE LEGIT FILES LISTED AND PLEASE BE CAREFUL WHILE FIXING. Once again… disable TeaTimer.

Scan with HijackThis, with all other browsers and windows closed, place a check beside the following and Fix:

O4 - HKLM\..\Run: [KavSvc] C:\WINDOWS\system32\ikpn.exe

Fix all the 016 lines as well.

Reboot. Scan with HijackThis and post a new log. Could you post a new Qoologic log too please.
