Hello. I've been getting a pop-up window from " http://540.filost.com/randomsites/banner.aspx" since 2 weeks ago causing a lot of problems. Since then I tried to remove it but to no avail until I read a thread posted by Shemp in this forum. I followed the instructions given by alsocom but the problem is the logfile posted by Shemp and my logfile are very different and I don't know which items to check. Posted below is the logfile generated by HijackThis.

Hello toshinomiya, Welcome to TomCoyote forum.Sorry for the wait, we are very busy. A couple of things:

1) Your HijackThis: C:\DOCUME~1\MICROS~1\LOCALS~1\Temp\HijackThis.exe is running from a Temp file and we need it to be in a permanent folder to store HJT.exe, logs and backups for safety. Please use this information to correct this:
http://www.bleepingcomputer.com/forums/tutorial94.html You can download HJT from here:
http://www.malwareremoval.com/downloads.html

2) Because several days have passed and logs can change rapidly, please post a new log in this same thread. I will be notified when you post and respond as soon as possible.
Thanks…pskelley

Hello toshinomiya, I am sorry, but I gave you the link so you would put the HJT.exe in a folder. Please review this information again.
http://www.bleepingcomputer.com/forums/tutorial94.html You can return to the desktop folder if you wish and right click on a blank spot and make a new folder called HJT. Put the HJT.exe in that folder and the log that should be there on the desktop. Backups will also store safely in that folder. It will look like this:

C:\Documents and Settings\Microsoft\Desktop\HJT\HijackThis.exe

I am preparing information for removal now and I will post it as soon as it is complete. Thank you…pskelley
Hello toshinomiya, Thank you for your patience. I wish to point out this issue: These two BHO's (BrowserHelperObjects) have missing files and we will remove them. They are related to your Norton and you may need to reinstall them after you are clean. I would ask your Norton technician about this, but they are not functioning correctly with the files missing.
O2 - BHO: NAV Helper - {BDF3E430-B101-42AD-A544-FADC6B084872} - C:\Program Files\Norton SystemWorks\Norton AntiVirus\NavShExt.dll (file missing)

1) Download CCleaner from this link: http://www.ccleaner.com/ Take the time to review the instructions on the download page so that when I ask you to run it you will know what you are doing.

2) Microsoft AntiSpyware is a good product but it will stop us from fixing the bad stuff and you will need to turn it off until you are done with HJT. Here are instructions:
To disable the program, follow the instructions below:
a.) Right click on the Microsoft Antispyware tray icon (a little red and yellow circle looking thing)
b.) Click on Security Agents Status (Enabled)
c.) Click on Disable Real-time Protection.

3) Open HijackThis and choose "Do a system scan only" then check the box in front of these line items:

O2 - BHO: NAV Helper - {BDF3E430-B101-42AD-A544-FADC6B084872} - C:\Program Files\Norton SystemWorks\Norton AntiVirus\NavShExt.dll (file missing)

Troj/AdClick-AC
Close all programs but HJT and all browser windows, then click on "Fix Checked"

SHOW HIDDEN FILES: Follow the instructions in the link to enable hidden files for your operating system.
You may wish to reverse this process if you have any concern about anyone getting into these hidden system files.
http://www.xtra.co.nz/help/0,,4155-1916458,00.html

RIGHT Click on Start then click on Explore. Locate and delete these items:

c:\temp\salm.exe >>> file (you may delete everything in that folder (NOT THE FOLDER)

C:\PROGRA~1\COMMON~1\System\MOSearch\ >>> folder

C:\WINDOWS\System32\vbsys2.dll >>> file

Let's check for trojans in case any are hiding, run this free online scan, scan the whole system and set it to clean or fix anything it locates. Let me know what it finds and the exact name and location of anything it locates but can't remove. You may be asked to install an ActiveX, please do so as this program is safe and it can not run without it.
http://www.windowsecurity.com/trojanscan/

Run CCleaner then restart the computer and post a new log in this same thread along with any feedback you have. Let us know how you are running.

Thanks…pskelley

I can't locate the salm.exe file in the temp folder although I've set all hidden files to be shown. I can't find salm.exe in the new logfile also so perhaps it's been deleted by HJT while it was fixing things. Is that possible?

I can't delete the vbsys2.dll. The error says: Cannot delete vbsys2.dll: Access denied. Make sure the disk is not full or write-protected and that the file is not currently in use. If it helps, the only browser that was opened at that time was the Explore browser.

Just as you said, I also run the on-line trojan scan but during the scanning it generated an error that goes like this: "Access violation at address 011B3F4D in module 'pattern.a2s'. Read of address 011E1008." I don't know what that means though but it aborted the scanning.

After restarting of the computer, the Machine Debug Manager pops out once in a while like after closing browsers or application programs. Is the problem of my computer more serious than I thought it is?

Despite all the problems stated above, after i restarted the computer and clicked the IE icon, only one window was open. There was no longer the usual IE window containing the url of 150.filost. So I guess things are quite okay, right?

P.S.

I'm no longer using the Norton this PC is upgraded to XP.
Hello toshinomiya,

Yes, this is why we do the items in the order we do them. Sometimes early efforts remove stuff so by the time you get to an instruction it is already gone. I often overkill because I do not want anything bad left on your computer. I want you to know your log looks clean. Perhaps the trojan program killed the trojan you could not remove. If you ever have an issue like that where you are trying to remove something bad, you should start the computer in Safe Mode to do it, since it will not be running in Safe Mode it will remove easily. Here are instructions for entering Safe Mode if you wish to have them: http://www.bleepingcomputer.com/forums/tutorial61.html
Since the log appears clean, Here is some great information from Tony Klein, Texruss, ChrisRLG and Grinler:

I would like you to look at the information in the links because this will help you stay clean and safe online. I would like you to watch your computer for two days, if everything seems to be running correctly, then post to let me know and I will close this thread.

Thanks…pskelley :wavey:
