[Shemp]

I keep getting a pop-up window from "http://540.filost.co...s/banner.aspx". It re-directs to different sites. I've tried Norton AntiVirus, AdAware, Microsoft AntiSpyware, CWShredder, and SpySubtract. Nothing seems to work. So now I'm trying HijackThis.

Step 1
We need to disable your Microsoft AntiSpyware Real-time Protection as it may interfere with the fixes that we need to make.

• Open Microsoft AntiSpyware.
• Click on Tools, Settings.
• In the left pane, click on Real-time Protection.
• Under Startup Options uncheck Enable the Microsoft AntiSpyware Security Agents on startup (recommended).
• Under Real-time spyware threat protection uncheck Enable real-time spyware threat protection (recommended).
• After you uncheck these, click on the Save button and close Microsoft AntiSpyware.
• Right click on the Microsoft AntiSpyware icon on the taskbar and select Shutdown Microsoft AntiSpyware.

After all of the fixes are complete it is very important that you enable Real-time Protection again.


Step 2
Open HijackThis, run a scan, then check the following:

Optional items to check with HijackThis for improved performance.
You have SpyKiller on your computer. This program is on the "rogue/suspect list" because it uses false positives as goad to purchase. You can read about it here. This is optional but I strongly recommend checking this entry than removing this program with Add/Remove Programs.

You have BestPopUpKiller on your computer. This program is of dubious repute from Swanksoft.com. I recommend removing it with Add/Remove Programs. You can download Google Toolbar which is a great program for blocking unwanted pop-ups.

With all other programs and browsers closed, click fix checked.


Step 3
Please set your computer to show all files.

• Double-click My Computer.
• Click the Tools menu, and then click Folder Options.
• Click the View tab.
• Clear "Hide file extensions for known file types."
• Under the "Hidden files" folder, select "Show hidden files and folders."
• Clear "Hide protected operating system files."
• Click Apply, and then click OK.

You will need to reverse this process when all steps are done.


Step 4
Please delete the following files/folders:

C:\WINDOWS\System32\ALCXMNTR.EXE << File Only
C:\WINDOWS\System32\vbsys2.dll << File Only

C:\Program Files\SpyKiller << Whole Folder
C:\Program Files\BestPopUpKiller << Whole Folder

If you have any problem deleting these files, reboot into Safe Mode (tap F8 during bootup, use arrow keys to select Safe Mode, then hit 'enter') and try again.


Step 5
Reboot normally and scan with HijackThis. Post the new log as a reply to this thread.
Please let us know of any complications you had and how the computer is behaving.

Alan, thank you very much! I believe the instructions you gave me did the trick in getting rid of the rascals... As of this time my computer is running normally. There were some items I was not able to find:

And I could not open in safe mode. I'm sure I was doing it wrong. However there are no pop-ups at this time.

Your new log is clean.

Reset and Re-enable your System Restore to remove bad files that have been backed up by Windows. The files in System Restore are protected to prevent any programs changing those files. This is the only way to clean these files: (You will lose all previous restore points which are likely to be infected.)

1. Right-click My Computer, and then click Properties.
2. On the Performance tab, click File System, or press ALT+F.
3. On the Troubleshooting tab, put a check mark in the 'Turn Off System Restore' check box.
4. Click OK twice, and then click Yes when you are prompted to restart the computer.
5. Repeat steps 1 - 3, this time clearing the box beside 'Turn Off System Restore'


MOST IMPORTANT: You Need to Update Windows and IE to get all the Latest Security Patches to protect your computer from the malware that is on the internet.
I recommend going to the following link and update to SP2. This adds more security and extra features including a pop-up blocker for Internet Explorer.

Now that everything is fixed, I suggest that you get these programs to help keep the computer clean:

Spyware Blaster - Blocks bad ActiveX items from installing on your computer. Spyware Blaster runs silently in the background.
SpywareGuard - Real-time protection from spyware installation attempts
ie-spyad - Puts over 8,000 bad URLs into your restricted sites for Internet Explorer.
Google Toolbar - Blocks many unwanted pop-ups in Internet Explorer.
Firefox - Safer alternative to the Internet Explorer web browser.

AVG AntiVirus - Free antivirus program if you currently are not using one.
ZoneAlarm - Free firewall program if you currently are not using one.

Here are three very good and free malware scanners:

Spybot Search and Destroy 1.3
AdAware SE v1.05
Set-up Instructions for Spybot S&D and Adaware SE
A2 Squared

If you have them already, check to make sure that they are the newest version.

Update these regularly.
