Windows XP Home. My PC is currently infested with parasites which I have been unable to remove with either SPYBOT or AdAware. I have Norton Internet Security installed but I fear that the infections occured prior to it being enabled. Several passes of Spybot have reduced the amount of spyware but it never reaches zero. These parasites are making life hell. The two predominant ones that I can recognise are IBIS TOOLBAR and DERBIZ.COM. Any help you can give would be much appreciated. Wilma

Download this tool: LQfix.zip
Unzip it to your Desktop.
Don't use it yet!

IMPORTANT! Reboot the computer into Safe Mode (tap F8 during bootup, use arrow keys to select Safe Mode, then hit 'enter').

Doubleclick LQfix.bat that you saved on your desktop before.
A doswindow will open and close again, that is normal.

Reboot into normal mode and scan with HijackThis. Post the new log as a reply to this thread.

Please download the trial version of Ewido Security Suite here:
http://www.ewido.net/en/download/
Install it, and update the definitions to the newest files. Do NOT run a scan yet.

Please download Nailfix from here:
http://users.pandora.be/bluepatchy/nailfix.zip
Unzip it to the desktop but please do NOT run it yet.

The above Registry file written by miekiemoes was written specifically for this infection and is not to be used on any other infection as it could damage a person's PC

Next, please reboot your computer in Safe Mode by doing the following:
1) Restart your computer
2) After hearing your computer beep once during startup, but before the Windows icon appears, press F8.
3) Instead of Windows loading as normal, a menu should appear
4) Select the first option, to run Windows in Safe Mode.

For additional help in booting into Safe Mode, see the following site:
http://www.pchell.com/support/safemode.shtml

Once in Safe Mode, please double-click on Nailfix.bat. Your desktop and icons will disappear and reappear, and a window should open and close very quickly — this is normal.

Then please run Ewido, and run a full scan. Post the log from the scan here for me.

Then please run HijackThis, click Scan, and check (if there):

F2 - REG:system.ini: Shell=Explorer.exe C:\WINDOWS\Nail.exe

Close all open windows except for HijackThis and click Fix Checked.

Restart your computer in normal mode and please post a new HijackThis log, as well as the log from the Ewido scan.
Hans,

I have followed your instructions but unfortunately after running Ewido in safe mode I was unable to obtain a log. The application ran for a considerable time and cleaned many files. When it reached 100% it stayed there for several minutes and then crashed.

I continued with your instructions and had to 'fix' the nail.exe.

On rebooting, Ewido 'automatically' identified malware and I cleaned it. I was then requested to do a reboot to complete the cleaning. I did this and have noticed that, since rebooting, I am not being pestered with pop-ups!! Very positive!!

I have posted the latest HiJackThis log below.

Thanks,

Wilma

Hi Hans.

Sorry for the long silence since your post. I have been away from my PC due to illness.

I have completed the tasks as outlined in your post. Not all of the files existed.

The PC is certainly feeling a lot more healthy. No pop-ups!! :D

Here is my latest log.

Regards,

Wilma

Hi Hans.

I tried to execute your instructions at virusscan.jotti but got the following error message.

"The file you uploaded is 0 bytes. It is very likely a firewall or a piece of malware is prohibiting you from uploading this file"

I disabled the firewall and still got the same message.

I abandoned this.

I next moved on to the HijackThis work. I managed to identify and remove 3 of the 5 items. I could not find these two items.

Looks good! :)

Here are some tips, to reduce the potential for spyware infection in the future, I strongly recommend installing the following applications:
  • Spywareblaster <= SpywareBlaster will prevent spyware from being installed.
  • Spywareguard <= SpywareGuard offers real-time protection from spyware installation attempts.
  • How to use Ad-Aware to remove Spyware <= If you suspect that you have spyware installed on your computer, here are instructions on how to download, install and then use Ad-Aware.
  • How to use Spybot to remove Spyware <= If you suspect that you have spyware installed on your computer, here are instructions on how to download, install and then use Spybot. Similar to Ad-Aware, I strongly recommend both to catch most spyware.
To protect yourself further:
  • IE/Spyad <= IE/Spyad places over 4000 websites and domains in the IE Restricted list which will severely impair attempts to infect your system. It basically prevents any downloads (Cookies etc) from the sites listed, although you will still be able to connect to the sites.
  • MVPS Hosts file <= The MVPS Hosts file replaces your current HOSTS file with one containing well know ad sites etc. Basically, this prevents your computer from connecting to those sites by redirecting them to 127.0.0.1 which is your local computer
I also suggest that you delete your Temp folders regularly. Use CleanUp! to do this automatically for you!
