Hi,
My first visit to this site and, in fact, my first ever "posting" anywhere so I trust I'm following the correct general and specific protocols.
I have two "infections" which I cannot remove. My experiences are as follows ….
I'm running with a Dell Inspiron 510m laptop and XP & SP2.
The latest versions of AVG/Spywareblaster/Spybot/Adaware/SpywareDoctor/WindowsDefender & A-Squared (Scanner only) are all installed.
I have downloaded and tried a number of other Malware removal programs and cleaned the registry with Registry Mechanic … all to no avail.

The problems are …

(1) TrendMicro's (online) Housecall picks up the following as an infection …

ADWARE_BHOT_IEHELPER

Housecall then purports to clean it, but on every subsequent scan it reappears after the "fix" (whether or not I reboot immediately after the fix.)
Only TC's Housecall picks up this infection.

(2) Spybot picks up (as a "red" entry) infection …

Microsoft.Windows.Security.Internet Explorer

and similarly purports to clear the infection - but again it keeps reappearing after (and only after) a reboot.
I have discovered that when the infection is present, at …
Control Panel/Internet Options/Advanced Tab/Security Section …
the "Allow active content to run in files on My Computer" box is ticked.
A Spybot scan and fix "removes" this tick from the box and a subsequent Spybot scan then shows no infections.
I can achieve the same effect (without fixing the infection with Spybot) by manually "unticking" the box then appy/OK after which it shows clear on a rescan.
Either way the infection always reappears and the tick returns to the box after a reboot.

Shown below are copies of the Highjack This log taken "before" a scan and fix - and immediately "after" the fix …

Welcome to Tom Coyote sorry about the delay but we get really swamped around here.

Your HJT log is old and we need to move it to its own folder, so do this and I will be glad to look it over for you.

Hijackthis 1.99.1
Its important that Hijackthis is installed in its own permanent folder for backup purposes.
  • Go to where you currently have HJT installed and delete the whole folder.
  • Use the link above or the links in my signature to download HJT 1.99.1 setup to your desktop
  • Double Click on the Setup icon and by defaut it will unzip to C:\Program Files\Hijackthis
  • Open HJT Scan and Save a Log File, it will open in Notepad
  • Go to Format and make sure WordWrap is unchecked
  • Go to Edit> Select All…..Edit > Copy and Paste the new log into this thread.
  • Please use the [external image: Posted Image] Button and not the New Topic Button
DO NOT have HijackThis fix anything yet. Most of what it finds will be harmless or even required.
Good Afternoon Ken545,
(Well, afternoon here in Northern Ireland)
I'm more than happy to wait in line … and am very grateful for your time and effort.
Below is HJT log just now created.
I await your advices on these two "infections."
Many thanks
OO

How are things in Northern Ireland??

We need to disable the Tea Timer in Spybot Search and Destroy as to not interfere with the fix.
  • Open Spybot and go to Mode> Advanced Mode> Tools> Resident and take the checkmark out of Tea Timer

Your log is not looking to bad, one entry we need to fix.

Open HJT Scan Only, close your browser and all open windows, check this item and click on Fix Checked
R0 - HKCU\Software\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\Main,Local Page = \blank.htm

Run this system cleaner
Please download ATF Cleaner by Atribune.
  • This program is for XP and Windows 2000 only
  • Double-click ATF-Cleaner.exe to run the program.
  • Under Main choose: Select All
  • Click the Empty Selected button.

Run this free online virus scanner from Panda, it may pick up some bad entires that are not showing up on yur HJT log. It's important that I see the log so copy and paste it into your next reply.
Panda ActiveScan <—-Accept default settings
Good Evening Ken,
Wet here in NI as usual … typical Autumnal weather for us !

TeaTimer disabled, HJT scan ran and R0 - HKCU…. now deleted.
ATF Cleaner ran and all items emptied.
PandaActiveScan ran and several possibles found.

I'm attaching the PandaScan log below.
I also ran another HJT after that and have also posted that log.

I haven't re-enabled teatimer yet (can I do so now ?) and didn't disinfect after the PandaScan (should I do so now ?)

Can I re-enable TeaTimer and Run/disinfect with PandaScan now ?

Regards
Obe One
Yes, it (AOL program) monitors the "health" of various security measures installed on the PC. (Whereabouts in the world are you ?)

(Whereabouts in the world are you ?)

Connecticut USA. We border New York, Massachussets and Rhode Island.

Read this ,
C:\Program Files\AOL\Active Security Monitor\ASMonitor.exe <– this is why I asked you about this program. If you installed it and don't have a problem with it then I guess its ok to keep. I just want you to be totally aware of what it does.

http://www.fbmsoftware.com/spyware-net/Pro…nitor_exe/1876/

asmonitor.exe is a process belonging to the Actual Spy advertising program. This process monitors your browsing habits and distributes the data back to the author's servers for analysis. This also prompts advertising popups. This process is a security risk and should be removed from your system.

Actual Spy - is a keylogger which allows you to find out what other users do on your computer in your absence. It is designed for the hidden computer monitoring and the monitoring of the computer activity. Keylogger Actual Spy is capable of catching all keystrokes, capturing the screen, logging the programs being run and closed, monitoring the clipboard contents.

If you want to remove this let me know.

  • Your Java is out of date and leaving your system vulnerable.
  • Go to your Add-Remove Programs in the Control Panel and uninstall any previous versions of Java (J2SE Runtime Environment)
  • It should have an icon next to it:
    [external image: Posted Image]
    Select it and click Remove.
  • Reboot your system.
  • Then go to the Sun Java website and download and install the update.
  • Java Runtime Environment (JRE) 5.0 Update 9 <–This is what you need to download and install.
  • Then after install you can verify your installation here Sun Java Verify

Out side of that program that is questionalbe, the rest of your log looks fine.

Let me know if your aware of what it does and if you want to keep it.

Ken :D
We visited NY city in the Spring of this year (for the 1st time) with two other couples where the husbands were celebrating their "Sixtieth" … fantastic … my wife & I can't wait to return ! OK … Old Java now uninstalled and JRE 5.0 Update 9 installed and verified. Had a look at asmonitor.exe as you suggested. I see what you mean. It apprears that the upside with this is considerably outweighed by the downside so I think I'll remove it as you hint/suggest. I take it that this involves more than using the Control Panel uninstaller or the Active Security Monitor's own installer ? How do I go about it ? I'm more than a little surprised :o that this program (by AOL) has this downside and more than disappointed that the keylogger in my SpywareDoctor (set to maximum sensitivity in OnGuard/Keylogger Guard) didn't raise some sort of alarm :rant2: . I still haven't re-enabled TeaTimer or cleaned the other entries (other than asmonitor.exe) found by the PandaScan. Is that OK ? Regards Obe One
Obe One :D I was born in DA BRONX :P Do you have and use AOL to access the internet ??? I am going to look into that program futher, so just hang in for a bit and I will be back. I see on most of the other fourms and even in our own that it is removed, but if its a program that you use and need, maybe we can work around it. Hang off on reenableling the Tea Timer, we can do that when we are done. Ken
OK Ken, "Standing By" as Radio Hams would say. Having said that ASM isn't a progam I NEED, and I only use it as a "healthcheck" occasionally. I assumed (it being from AOL) that it was safe. It scans the computer and (purports to) monitor changes in … firewall, virus protection, spyware protection, Windows&Browser, wireless security, P2P software and PC utilities … protection levels. Handy but nowhere near essential. Satisfy your curiosity by all means but in the circumstances I'd rather remove it than try a workaround. Obe One
This may be getting confused with another similar program, open up HJT > Misc Tools> Uninstall Manager and click on Save List and post the list into this thread.
