Hi all,

the other day i ran the Pest Patrol Free Scan & it found a spyware called websearch toolbar (Hijacker)…the problem is my Ad Aware, SpyBot, MS anti spyware & Yahoo anti spyware doesnt not detect it, only pest patrol did….i ran a couple of Anti Virus software they found nutting. Pest Patrol gave the exact place where this spyware is located:

HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\Software\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\ActiveX Compatibility\{8952A998-1E7E-4716-B23D-3DBE03910972}

i found details about this Hkey while searching in google:
Item Found: Registry Folder
Item Vendor: IBIS Toolbar
Item Type: Adware
Item Name: {8952A998-1E7E-4716-B23D-3DBE03910972}
Item Path: HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\Software\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\ActiveX Compatibility\{8952A998-1E7E-4716-B23D-3DBE03910972}

i know we must be careful with the registry i wanna know if it safe to delete this Key & will not affect my computer?? this morning my computer started slowly & had a couples of errors, can it be that this spyware be the cause of all this, i notice also this morning while using trend micro free online scanner after i finished i close the 2 windows there was a pop up (ad) window that come from nowhere.

Heres my Hijack this log can someone tell me if there anything wrong in my log i should be concerned & could explain my problem.

Thanks a lot in advance for all the help :)

Hi ZeroCool and welcome to the Tom Coyote Forums.

My name is Trevuren and I will he helping you.

Please print out or copy this page to Notepad. Make sure to work through the fixes in the exact order in which they are mentioned below. If there's anything that you don't understand, ask your question(s) before proceeding with the fixes.

1. Go to the Tom Coyote Forums http://forums.tomcoyote.org/index.php?
.Click on My Controls near the top middle of the window (make sure you have signed in first)
.On the left hand column, click "view topics"
.If you click on the title of your post, you will be taken there
2. Also, while at that place in control panel, check the box to the right of your post and then scroll down.
Where it says "unsubscribe" click the pull-down menu and select "immediate email notification", By doing this, you will be notified as soon as I have posted a reply to your log.

3. I notice that you are using more than one antivirus program. This is very dangerous, as multiple AVs can interfere with one another and actually allow MORE viruses to get through. I strongly suggest you go to Start -> Control Panel -> Add/Remove Programs and uninstall all but one antivirus program

4. After this is completed, run HijackThis and with all windows closed except for HJT, click SCAN, produce a LOG and POST it in this thread for review.

Regards,

Trevuren
Hi Trevuren thaks for helping me out :) I was able to learn from someone that my spyware problem is false (websearch tool) hes done also the Pest Patrol free scan and it found also on his computer the same spyware on this registry HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\software\Microsoft\internet explorer\active x compatibility\ {8952a998-1e7e-4716-b23d-3dbe03910972} His SpywareBlaster said its protection against activeX like Huntbar Variant - {8952a998-1e7e-4716-b23d-3dbe03910972} but thats doesnt solve my problem because i know my computer caught something its been slow since this morning with a couple of errors , now i think its the fact i had 2 anti virus (you're the 3rd person that recommended me to have one only) and virus or trojan/spyware made is way into my system, i will remove one of my 2 anti virus, do you think its better i remove Norton since this morning i notice strange behavior from the progam like live updates (like if it was the first time i install it :o ) and i had a lot of alert from my Zone Alarm about my Norton software (change program, repeat program) even Yahoo Messenger, should i take no chance & just remove Norton & Keep My AVG instead? so after i can do what you instruct me to do. Thanks again
Hi ZeroCool,

They are both excellent products. One thing to think about is that Norton is known to be a huge resource hog. It does slow down your system compared to others. Mind you, the more anti-malware programs you have on "alert" status, the slower your system will get.

As I said, your choice. I did not renew my Symantec subscription.

Trevuren
Okay thanks,

But can it be possible that my Norton Anti Virus program might have been corrupted because my ZoneAlarm gave me alot of alert about the Norton Program like Live Update engine com module was change program (this in Zone Alarm alert & log) my computer was unusually slow this morning.

i tryd every anti spyware softwares (even trojan hunter) & free anti virus possible & still cant find the problems, should proceed like you instruct me to do?? i could remove Norton just to be sure and reinstall it later.

Thanks
Hi ZeroCool,

Firewalls will alert you anytime your AV changes anything to one of its modules through upgrades that you may not know are happening. I am currently using Bit Defender with Free ZoneAlarm and it is always bugging me.

Trevuren
Hi ZeroCool,

As I mentioned in my FIRST post, once you have uninstalled one of the antivirus programs, send me a new HijackThis log so we can get some bad stuff off your system.

Regards,

Trevuren
Sorry i took longer when my computer restart its very slow & i had problems to uninstall Norton it wouldnt let me i dont know why but i was able to.

Hi ZeroCool,

Please print out or copy this page to Notepad. Make sure to work through the fixes in the exact order in which they are mentioned below. If there's anything that you don't understand, ask your question(s) before proceeding with the fixes.

First, we need to disable your Microsoft AntiSpyware Real-time Protection as it may interfere with the fixes.

Open Microsoft AntiSpyware.
Click on Tools, Settings.
In the left pane, click on Real-time Protection.
Under Startup Options uncheck: Enable the Microsoft AntiSpyware Security Agents on startup (recommended).
Under Real-time spyware threat protection uncheck: Enable real-time spyware threat protection (recommended).
After you uncheck these, click on the Save button and close Microsoft AntiSpyware.
Right click on the Microsoft AntiSpyware icon on the taskbar and select Shutdown Microsoft AntiSpyware

Now let's do some work on your log:

First we need to make all files and folders VISIBLE:

Go to start>control panel>folder options>view (tab)
*choose to "show hidden files and folders,"
*uncheck the "hide protected operating system files" and the "hide extensions for know file types" boxes.
*Close the window with ok
*All hidden files will now be visible

Close all browser windows and RUN HijackThis.
. Click the SCAN button to produce a log.

Place a check mark beside each one of the following items:

R1 - HKCU\Software\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\Main,Search Bar = http://red.clientapps.yahoo.com/customize/…/search/ie.html
R1 - HKCU\Software\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\Main,Search Page = http://red.clientapps.yahoo.com/customize/…//www.yahoo.com
R0 - HKCU\Software\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\Main,Start Page = http://www2.canoe.com/index.html
R1 - HKLM\Software\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\Main,Default_Search_URL = http://red.clientapps.yahoo.com/customize/…//www.yahoo.com
R1 - HKLM\Software\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\Main,Search Bar = http://red.clientapps.yahoo.com/customize/…rch/search.html
R1 - HKLM\Software\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\Main,Search Page = http://red.clientapps.yahoo.com/customize/…//www.yahoo.com
R1 - HKCU\Software\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\SearchURL,(Default) = http://red.clientapps.yahoo.com/customize/…//www.yahoo.com
R3 - Default URLSearchHook is missing

Now with all the items selected, delete them by clicking the FIX checked button. Close the HijackThis window and Reboot Your System

Finally, RUN Hijackthis again and produce a new HJT log. Post it in the forum so we can check how everytjhing looks now.

Regards,

Trevuren

Hi ZeroCool,

Congratulations, your new log shows that your SYSTEM IS CLEAN

There are a few things you must do once you are completely clean:

1. Reset and Re-enable your System Restore to remove bad files from the backup that Windows makes as no program is able to clean those files:

TO DISABLE SYSTEM RESTORE
1. Right-click "My Computer", and then left click "Properties".
2. Left click on "System Restore Tab"
3. Check box beside "Turn Off System Restore"
4. Left click on "Apply"

TO ENABLE SYSTEM RESTORE
1.Remove check mark from "Turn Off System Restore"
2.Click on "Apply"

2. Cleanup the leftovers. Download CleanUP! - Cleans temporary files from IE and Windows, empties the recycle bin and more. Great tool to help speed up your computer and knock out those nasties that like to reside in the temp folders.

3. Finally, Re-hide your System Files and Folders to prevent any future accidents.

Here are some tips to reduce the potential for spyware infection in the future:

I strongly recommend installing the following applications:
  • Spywareblaster <= SpywareBlaster will prevent spyware from being installed.
  • Spywareguard <= SpywareGuard offers realtime protection from spyware installation attempts.
  • How to use Ad-Aware to remove Spyware <= If you suspect that you have spyware installed on your computer, here are instructions on how to download, install and then use Ad-Aware.
  • How to use Spybot to remove Spyware <= If you suspect that you have spyware installed on your computer, here are instructions on how to download, install and then use Spybot. Similar to Ad-Aware, I strongly recommend both to catch most spyware.
To protect yourself further:
  • IE/Spyad <= IE/Spyad places over 4000 websites and domains in the IE Restricted list which will severely impair attempts to infect your system. It basically prevents any downloads (Cookies etc) from the sites listed, although you will still be able to connect to the sites.
  • MVPS Hosts file <= The MVPS Hosts file replaces your current HOSTS file with one containing well know ad sites etc. Basically, this prevents your coputer from connecting to those sites by redirecting them to 127.0.0.1 which is your local computer
  • Google Toolbar <= Get the free google toolbar to help stop pop up windows.
And also see TonyKlein's good advice
So how did I get infected in the first place? (My Favorite)

Regards,

Trevuren
