Hello, Help,

The site said I needed to update ActiveX. I downloaded it and now I get redirected from my start-up page to PuresafetyHere dot com and a warning window pops up to sell me security software. There is a toolbar that cannot be removed. Security Toolbar 7.1 with buttons to click for "Block adware/popups" and "Remove spyware" .

Thanks for any help,

ike

Hi ike39,

Please post the logs in your response instead of attaching them, they are easier to read that way.

Download the latest HJTsetup.exe from this link:
http://www.trendsecure.com/portal/en-US/th…/HJTInstall.exe

Once you have downloaded the new version, remove the old version via Control Panel->Programs and Features and then use Windows Explorer to delete the program file:
C:\Program Files\HiJackThis\HijackThis.exe

Then run the new version's installer HJTInstall.exe and follow the prompts and when finished close the program for now.

Then, download Deckard's System Scanner (DSS) to your Desktop (right-click the link, select Save Target As…, select your Desktop and press Save)
  • Close all applications and windows.
  • Double-click on dss.exe to run it, and follow the prompts.
  • When the scan is complete, two text files will open - main.txt <- this one will be maximized and extra.txt<-this one will be minimized
  • Make sure Format->Word Wrap is unchecked
  • Copy (Ctrl+A then Ctrl+C) and paste (Ctrl+V) the contents of main.txt and extra.txt in your reply

Once complete, please post both DSS logs, you won't need to produce a new HijackThis log as DSS produces one for you.
Silver,

Right now the laptop/IE is working fine with no unwanted tool bar and no pop-ups.

I installed AVG yesterday and removed what I think was all the malware on my laptop.

DSS did create two logs but while trying to post them this morning the AVG update reminder interrupted and I closed everything and started over. Now I cannot get DSS to create the second log. I have uninstalled/reinstalled Hijack this and DSS several times but get the same results. Here is the log Main.txt

Again, everything seems to be working fine now.

Thanks,

ike

Glad to hear things are running better, however there are some malware entries in your HijackThis log so we should clean them off.

First however, please post the DSS extra.txt.
You should find the original extra.txt located in this folder or a subfolder under it named with the date and time of the scan:
C:\Deckard\System Scanner

If required, you can produce another one as follows:
  • Make sure DSS.exe is on your Desktop
  • Press the Start orb and copy/paste the following command into the search box and press enter:

    "%userprofile%\desktop\dss.exe" /config

  • A configuration box will appear, click the Check All button then then press Scan!
  • The extra report will be minimized so please look for it's window on the taskbar
OK, Silver,

Sorry the extra file wasn't here on last post. The deckard / system scanner folder has 10 subfolders from my attempts to use dss but only the first one has an extra.txt file in it. Anyway i did as you said and here are the correct files.

R2 CLCapSvc (CyberLink Background Capture Service (CBCS)) - "c:\program files\hp\quickplay\kernel\tv\clcapsvc.exe"
Hi ike39,

Now that you have installed AVG you have two antivirus programs running. I know that AVG may have helped your problem, but having two antivirus programs installed can cause conflicts, slow your system down and even cause stability problems without improving your security. You should use just one antivirus program and if you want an "2nd opinion", use an online scanner like Kaspersky's.

If you have two antivirus programs installed, then before proceeding, please remove one of them via Start->Control Panel->Programs and Features.
Please make sure you choose one currently capable of receiving updates, because an antivirus program without updates cannot protect your system effectively. If you have any problems with this, please stop and let me know.

Also use Start->Control Panel->Programs and Features to remove these:

JavaT 6 Update 2
JavaT SE Runtime Environment 6

These are out of date and now a security risk, you can get the latest update (version 6 update 4) from here

Next, please download and scan with SmitfraudFix. If you already have a copy of this program, please delete it and get a new one - it is updated constantly:
Download SmitfraudFix (by S!Ri) to your Desktop.
http://siri.urz.free.fr/Fix/SmitfraudFix.exe

Right-click SmitfraudFix.exe and select Run as administrator
Select option #1 - Search by typing 1 and press Enter
This program will scan large amounts of files on your computer for known patterns so please be patient while it works. When it is done, the results of the scan will be displayed and it will create a log named rapport.txt in the root of your drive, eg: Local Disk C: or partition where your operating system is installed.

IMPORTANT: Do NOT run any other options until you are asked to do so!

If the tool fails to launch from the Desktop, please move SmitfraudFix.exe directly to the root of the system drive (usually C: ), and launch from there.

Note: process.exe is detected by some antivirus programs as a "RiskTool"; it is not a virus, but a program used to stop system processes. Antivirus programs cannot distinguish between "good" and "malicious" use of such programs, therefore they may alert the user. Further info is available here.

Once complete, please post the SmitfraudFix report and a new HijackThis log.
Silver,

I would prefer to remove AVG as it didn't cost anything. Programs and features tells me AVG cannot be uninstalled due to an error and warns it may have already been removed ( it has not been, though i did shut it off and tried again). Is there another way to remove AVG ?

Also Java TM 6 Update 2 does not uninstall, I am asked to close IE and reboot the computer to complete installation, so I cancelled. Should I continue with SmitFraud etc..?

Hi ike39,

Open HijackThis by right-clicking the program or shortcut and selecting Run as administrator
Select Open the Misc Tools section
Press the Open Uninstall Manager… button, then look down the list for this entry:

Secure Browsing

If present, highlight the entry by clicking on it, click Delete this entry and OK any prompts
Repeat for this entry:

Web Application

Now press Back to return to the main screen, then click Scan and place a checkmark next to the following lines:

O3 - Toolbar: Web Application - {81705D67-3F73-4983-859B-97D0922E5ABE} - C:\Program Files\NetProject\wamdl.dll (file missing)
O4 - HKLM\..\Policies\Explorer\Run: [start] C:\Program Files\NetProject\sbmntr.exe

Then close all open windows apart from HijackThis, press Fix checked, OK the prompt and close HijackThis.

Next, use Windows Explorer (right-click Start, select Explore) to find and delete the following folder::

C:\Program Files\NetProject

If you have trouble finding or deleting it, please let me know in your next response.

Then please do an online scan with Kaspersky:
Open Kaspersky Online Scanner in Internet Explorer

When prompted, allow the installation of ActiveX components from Kaspersky
  • The program will launch and then begin downloading the latest definition files:
  • Once the files have been downloaded click on NEXT and then Scan Settings
  • In the scan settings make that the following are selected:
    • Scan using the following Anti-Virus database:
    Extended (if available otherwise Standard)
    • Scan Options:
    Scan Archives
    Scan Mail Bases
  • Click OK
  • Now under select a target to scan:Select My Computer
  • The program will start to scan your system.
  • Once the scan is complete, click on the Save Report As button, change the Save as type: to Text file and save the file to your Desktop
  • If Internet Explorer responds saying the report has been saved to the Temporary Internet Files folder, say Yes to open the folder, then navigate to C -> Users -> (Your username) -> Desktop to locate the report
Note: If at any time you have trouble with the accept button of the license, click on the Zoom tool located at the right bottom of the IE window and set the zoom to 75 %. Once the license is accepted, reset to 100%.

Once complete, please post the Kaspersky report and a new HijackThis log.
Silver,

I removed the NetProject folder from program files when i found it Wednesday, I think. It is not in C:\program files now.

Here are the Kaspersky and HJT logs.

Hi ike39,

That looks good, it looks like all the leftovers of the infection are gone.
You should now delete DSS.exe, SmitfraudFix.exe and it's folder SmitfraudFix from your Desktop.
Also delete this folder:

C:\Deckard

Then press Start, type cleanmgr into the search box and press Enter
Select Files from all users on this computer, and select your system drive (C: )
Ensure the boxes for Recycle Bin, Temporary Files and Temporary Internet Files are checked, you can choose to check other boxes if you wish but they are not required.
Press OK and Delete files to confirm

Next please try to remove AVG:
Open the following website and download the latest AVG Free Antivirus installer to your Desktop:
http://free.grisoft.com/doc/1

Double-click the installer, follow the prompts until you are prompted to Select Setup Type - choose Uninstall product
One the next screen, make sure Including objects in the Virus Vault is checked.
Follow the prompts and when complete, allow your machine to be rebooted.

Once complete, let me know if you had any difficulty with the instructions, and whether AVG was successfully removed.
Done and done , and thank you very much. All seems well now. Should I remove the AVG Antivirus from the desktop, too? Silver, thanks again for all the help. Now that I am more comfortable accessing my accounts online I will be happy to donate to the Whatthetech website. Have a great week, ike
Hi ike39,

Yes, you can delete the AVG installer now.
I'm glad to hear that worked and that things are running well. Thank you for your offer to donate to the site, it is much appreciated :)

Here are some tips to help you keep your computer clean:

Operating system vulnerabilities can easily be exploited by malware so please ensure your operating system is automatically kept up to date by using Windows Update:
Go to Start->Control Panel->Windows Update
Click Change settings on the left side, then select Install updates automatically and choose a suitable schedule
Also, check that your antivirus and antispyware programs are set to automatically update daily.

Windows Defender is a good antispyware program but it looks like you have disabled it from automatically starting. I recommend you re-enable it as follows:
Press Start, type msconfig into the search box and press Enter
Choose the Startup tab
Find the entry for Windows Defender and place a checkmark next to it.
Press OK to close the dialog box.

Consider a custom hosts file such as MVPS HOSTS. This custom hosts file effectively blocks a wide range of unwanted ads, banners, 3rd party Cookies, 3rd party page counters, web bugs, and many hijackers.
For information on how to download and install, please read this tutorial by WinHelp2002
Note: Be sure to follow the instructions to disable the DNS Client service before installing a custom hosts file.
Also: subscribe to the mailing list to get update notifications.

Please take care when downloading programs. One of the easiest ways to be infected is to download freeware/shareware programs which come laden with malware - this includes allowing websites to install browser plug-ins or ActiveX controls. Before downloading, it is crucial to check whether the source is reputable.
One way to check is to use McAfee SiteAdvisor. Copy the domain name into the space provided and SiteAdvisor will give you a report on the website which can help you decide if it is safe. They also have a toolbar for IE and Firefox which adds this functionality to your browser.

Download and install the free version of WinPatrol. This program protects your computer in a variety of ways and will work well with your existing security software. Have a look at this tutorial to help you get started with the program.
