Thanks for even having a forum like this! You folks are wonderful…I've been struggling with this browser jack for a while. I didn't realize it was even "Here4Search" until after reading a post here and opening IE (I hardly use it directly) to see the jacked homepage. Adaware and Spybot can't completely remove it.

Symptoms:
1. Two randomly named processes are running on startup [2812c14wg192v5t and 8jnl45949thd]. The designations change if they are "removed" using adaware or spybot.

2. IE homepage jacked (letgohome.com)

3. If process left running, eventually multiple instances of "iexplore" appear in task list

4. screen flashes every 3/4 seconds

5. "work offline" box pops up periodcally

You may want to print out these instructions or save them to your desktop as a text file with Notepad because we will be restarting into Safe Mode later on in the fix and you might not be able to access the Internet.
  • Prepare CWShredder for use:
    • Download CWShredder.
    • Save CWShredder.exe to a convenient location.
    • Please do not do anything with it yet.
  • Prepare Ad-Aware SE for use:
    • Download Ad-Aware SE.
    • Install the program.
    • Click on "check for updates now" to make sure you have the latest reference file.
    • You do not need to run this yet so close the program.
  • Reconfigure Windows 98 to show hidden files:
    • Double-click the My Computer icon on the Windows desktop.
    • Click Folder Options. Select the View Tab.
    • In the Advanced Settings box, under the "Hidden files" folder, click "Show all files".
    • On the View tab, uncheck the "Hide file extensions for known file types" option.
    • Click Yes to confirm. Click OK.

Boot into Safe Mode:
Restart your computer and immediately begin tapping the F8 key on your keyboard.
If done right a Windows Advanced Options menu will appear. Select the Safe Mode option and press Enter.
To return to normal mode just restart your computer as you normally would.
  • Scan with Ad-Aware SE
    • Click "Start", select "Perform Full System scan" and "Next" to start the scan.
    • When the scan is finished, the screen will tell you if anything has been found, click "Next".
    • The bad files will be listed, right click the pane and click "Select all objects" - this will put a check mark in the box at the side, click "Next" again and click "OK" at the prompt "# objects will be removed. Continue?".
  • Run CWShredder:
    • Double-click on CWShredder.exe.
    • Click "Fix ->" and click "OK" at the prompt.
    • CWShredder will scan and clean your system of CWS files.
    • Click "Next->" and then "Exit".
  • Fix with Hijackthis:
    • Open Hijackthis, Run a scan and check the following (if still present):

      R1 - HKCU\Software\Microsoft\Internet Explorer,SearchURL = http://letgohome.com/sp.htm?id=9

    • Click "OK" to remove them.
    • Click "Yes" to confirm the deletion.
  • Restart your computer normally to return to normal mode.
  • Free TrendMicro Housecall scan:
    • You'll need to use Internet Explorer or Netscape browsers to run this scan.
    • Vist the TrendMicro Housecall website.
    • Select your country from the drop-down list and click "Go".
    • Choose "Yes" at the ActiveX Security Warning prompt.
    • Please wait while the Housecall engine is updated.
    • Select the drives to be scanned by placing a check in their respective boxes.
    • Check the "Auto Clean" box.
    • Click "SCAN" in order to begin scanning your system.
    • Please be patient while Housecall scans your system for malicious files.
    • If not auto-cleaned, remove anything it finds.
    • Click "Close" to exit the Housecall scanner.
    • Choose "Yes" at the HouseCall message prompt.
  • Prepare your reply:
    • Please post a fresh HijackThis log as a reply to this thread.
    • Please note any complications you had.
Thank you very much for the help! The new logfile is posted below. I didn't have any real problems but there were a few things to mention.

I found two occurences of the romahere3 in the scan I did. I missed the second one on the first look through the list but caught in time to fix it. Tricky bugger!

Second, I didn't find any of the files mentioned in section 4 of the instructions posted above. Should I be concerned?

Third, this wasn't really a problem but perhaps the wait time for the TrendMicro scan could be emphasized a little more. It's indicated in the instructions you gave but I was concerned when it looked as if it had done nothing after twenty minutes of so! :) I heeded the instuction to be patient ( I actually took a nap…) and finished up.

Thanks for the assistance…you guys are techno-geek saints!

Log looks much better.

Step 1
Open HijackThis, run a scan, then check the following:

O4 - HKLM\..\Run: [xgmzfbj] "C:\WINDOWS\SYSTEM\XGMZFBJ.exe"

With all other programs and browsers closed, click fix checked.

Step 2
Please set your computer to show all files.
Click OK.
You will need to reverse this process when all steps are done.

Step 3
Please delete the following file:

C:\WINDOWS\SYSTEM\XGMZFBJ.exe

If you have any problem deleting these files, reboot into Safe Mode (tap F8 during bootup, use arrow keys to select Safe Mode, then hit 'enter') and try again.

Step 4
Launch Notepad, and copy/paste the box below into a new text file. Save it as FindDLL.bat and save it on your Desktop.

dir C:\WINDOWS\System32\*.dll.dll > BadDLL.txt
notepad BadDLL.txt

Locate FindDLL.bat on your Desktop and double-click on it. It will open Notepad with some text in it. Please post the text here.

Step 5
Reboot normally and scan with HijackThis. Post the new log as a reply to this thread.
Please let us know of any complications you had and how the computer is behaving.
Thanks again for all your help, Alan.

No complications to report, other than not finding the xgmzfbj.exe file in the system folder (or anywhere else) from section 3 of the instructions above. But it's not showing up in the log so I guess HJT must have removed it. The PC is working like a dream with none of the issues mentioned above. Seems to be moving a little faster all around, as well. One question, though… Is it neccessary to reset the computer to "hide files/hide file extensions for known file types" ? What is benefit to doing so?

I would recommend re-hiding the system files to make sure that no one mistakenly deletes a critical system file. As for the hiding file extensions, you can leave these showing.

Your new log is clean.:)

Now that everything is fixed, I suggest that you get these programs to help keep the computer clean:

Spyware Blaster - Blocks bad ActiveX items from installing on your computer. Spyware Blaster runs silently in the background.
SpywareGuard - Real-time protection from spyware installation attempts
ie-spyad - Puts over 8,000 bad URLs into your restricted sites for Internet Explorer.
Google Toolbar - Blocks many unwanted pop-ups in Internet Explorer.
Firefox - Safer alternative to the Internet Explorer web browser.

AVG AntiVirus - Free antivirus program if you currently are not using one.
ZoneAlarm - Free firewall program if you currently are not using one.

Update these regularly.

You may also want to read "How did I get infected in the first place" to learn how to better secure your computer.

Be sure to keep Windows and your Anti-virus updated.
Alan Thanks so much for the invaluable assist and for the suggestions on how to keep it clean. You folks rock!
