Ok, I've been trying to clear out my friend's computer here for the past couple of days. I've managed to take out about 300 tracking cookies and 30 different spyware, but I can't seem to get rid of requests for here4search.biz and smart-security.biz, and not long ago a popup snuck through for (I can't quite recall now - OIN, I think).

Anyway, here's the HijackThis from a few minutes ago. I hilighted the lines that really worry me.

Despite the references to Yahoo Toolbar at the start of the log, he does NOT have it installed at all. I also have logs from BFU and Ewido if anyone wants to see them.
Ok, I've been looking at his computer further, and Spy Sweeper is reporting that he's definitely infected with Winlogonhook. I've followed instructions I've found online in removing it (boot to safe mode, open Spy Sweeper, kill explorer.exe, run Spy Sweeper and sweep the system, restart explorer, and sweep again), but the infection remains untouched. I've noticed that even in safe mode with explorer.exe shut down, Task Manager shows iexplore.exe constantly starting up on its own. The other thing still occurring is that the OIN pop-ups are coming faster and faster.
Hello and welcome to the TC Forum.

Please post the contents of C:\vundofix.txt and a new HijackThis log.
I'm a'workin on it. I ran both and was typing up a reply when IE closed and a few more trojans were downloaded. (I had SpySweeper shut down still from a previous fix attempt on winlogonhook…doh.) Spyware Sweeper is reporting that Winlogon.exe is the culprit for installing all SORTS of trojans, BHO's, etc. I'm running a full sweep on the infected machine right now, then will re-run HJT and VundoFix and post the logs. Right now, the machine appears to have just picked up infections of: Purity Scan, Spyware Quake, and a slew of others.
Ok, I managed to get Spyware Quake removed from my system, then I re-ran ATF Cleaner, Vundo Fix, and HJT. Logs follow.

My computer has its own issues - this is my roommate's computer. ;-) Whenever I select "Delete a file on reboot" in HJT, the program immediately closes, without giving me the option to select the file to be deleted. Perhaps some sort of interaction with ewido or SpySweeper? I'm installing the anti-virus as we speak.

I'm installing the anti-virus as we speak.

I wouldn't think ewido or SpySweeper would cause that.

Let's see what the AV finds when it's finished
Ok, AV installed and run.

(Thanks for all the help, by the way.)

Anyway, the Grisoft AV found and cleaned 'Generic.XAH'. After a reboot and a re-scan, it found nothing.

Then I ran HJT. First I attempted to use the delete on reboot option, but the program still closed as soon as I selected it. I ran another HJT log, and this is what I got:

Now, just as I opened this site, a popup came up for something called 'Sysprotect'. It managed to get around all the anti-spyware running (and theoretically preventing popups). On top of that, a Spysweeper scan detected Spyware Quake still on the system, despite my supposedly cleaning it via RogueScanFix and smitRem, as well as Winlogonhook STILL being there.

Also, am I right in my understanding that O20 (~regedit.dll) is a trojan and has to go as well?

As to C:\WINDOWS\system32\ssqpm.dll, would it be possible to successfully remove it by manually deleting it in safe mode?

yes, give it a try.

lets get rid of this too.

C:\Program Files\Common Files\{9CF8ABD9-089A-1033-1027-040618040001} I would also get rid of anything like this. Nothing like that belongs there.

Even in safe mode, I could neither delete nor modify that dll - the system showed it as being in use and disallowed changes. Regsvr32 states that the dll is loaded, but not registered, and there is no process that jumps out to me as being tied to this dll. I nosed around the registry and found at least one entry for the DLL still there, but I didn't touch it - as a database developer, registry tweaking isn't exactly my forte.

When opening this page, I was hijacked to a page for Winantiviruspro, and then when I closed and re-opened, I got a full-screen popup for count.exitexchange.com. On top of that, the computer seems somewhat slow on startup, with the system pausing with the 'system busy' cursor showing for about 20-30 seconds, where it didn't do that before. I suppose it COULD just be the new AV doing a quick scan each time, but right now I'm getting paranoid about this system.

I also at least one process isn't showing in the HJT log - specifically, csrss.exe shows as SYSTEM processes in Task Manager, but don't appear in the log. I'm afraid I may have to tell my roommie that he needs to format his machine. :(

Edit: Ignore the last paragraph, I did further research on the other machine, guess csrss.exe is fine. It not showing just fed my current paranoia.
Download Pocket Killbox version 2.0.0.175
http://www.atribune.org/downloads/KillBox.exe
If you already have Killbox first ensure it is this version !.

Then double-click on the killbox.exe program.

At the main screen of KillBox, select the option: Delete on Reboot
Then, in the Full Path of File to Delete box copy/paste the following entry:

C:\WINDOWS\system32\ssqpm.dll

Press the button with a red circle and a white X (Delete File button)
KillBox will alert you: All listed files will be deleted on next Reboot
Click Yes
Next prompt will be: Files will be removed on reboot. Do you want to reboot now?
Select Yes

Post a new HJT log
Every time I try to delete the file with this program, I get the following error: "PendingFileRenameOperations Registry Data has been Removed by External Process!" This error then aborts the reboot. I tried in normal mode, in safe mode, in normal disconnected from the 'Net and with all the anti-malware both on and off, and in safe mode with both options. In safe mode, I tried delete on reboot, direct delete, direct delete after unregistering the DLL, and replacement with a dummy file on reboot. Every time, some process kills it.
Download Avenger by Swandog, and unzip it to your desktop or somewhere you can find it. (Do not run it yet).
http://swandog46.geekstogo.com/avenger.zip

Note: The Avenger must be run from a user account with administrator privileges,
