Thanks in advance for all that you guys do to help us!

On the (dreaded) 8/16/05 something evil took over my browser. I manage only to stay online a few minutes at a time and have not been able to isolate the trouble with Spybot & AdAware. My ISP & AV providers can't help.

Could you take a look at my HJT log for me please?

Thank you so much,
Beachbabe

Hello and welcome to TomCoyote forum. If you are not being helped elsewhere, please do this:

1) HJT is running from a Temp folder, we will delete all item in the Temp folder during the cleaning. Use these links to place it in a safe permanent folder where it can store logs and backups for safety:
http://russelltexas....tehjtfolder.htm
http://www.bleepingc...tutorial94.html
Note: This video tutorial requires Macromedia Flash to play.
http://www.spywareai...ile=svideo&id=1
Please do this before you proceed.
2)Download CCleaner from this link: http://www.ccleaner.com/ Review the instructions on the download page and please do not run it until I ask you to.

3) Download, update, configure and run these two programs: http://tomcoyote.org/aawsb.php Please do not activate TeaTimer until we are finished with the repair.
The newest version of Ad-aware is 1.06 and Spybot 1.04. Even if you have these programs, use the link to get the newest version, update and configure them as in the link. Run Spybot first, reboot then run Ad-aware. Both programs back up what they remove so delete anything the programs say should be removed.

4) Ewido scan:
Please download Ewido Security Suite it is a trial version of the program.
  • Install ewido security suite
  • Launch ewido, there should be an icon on your desktop double-click it.
  • The program will now go to the main screen
You will need to update ewido to the latest definition files.
  • On the left hand side of the main screen click update
  • Then click on Start Update
The update will start and a progress bar will show the updates being installed.
If you are having problems with the updater, you can use this link to manually update Ewido.
Ewido manual updates

Once the updates are installed do the following:
  • Click on scanner
  • Click on Complete System Scan and the scan will begin.
  • NOTE: During some scans with ewido it is finding cases of false positives.**
    • You will need to step through the process of cleaning files one-by-one.
    • If ewido detects a file you KNOW to be legitimate, select none as the action.
    • DO NOT select "Perform action on all infections"
    • If you are unsure of any entry found select none for now.
  • Once the scan has completed, there will be a button located on the bottom of the screen named Save report
  • Click Save report.
  • Save the report .txt file to your desktop.
Now close ewido security suite.
**(Ewido for example has been flagging parts of AVG Anti-Virus, pcAnywhere and the game "Risk")

5) Open HijackThis and choose "Do a system scan only" then check the box in front of these line items:

R1 - HKCU\Software\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\Main,Search Bar = about:blank
R1 - HKCU\Software\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\Search,SearchAssistant = about:blank

O6 - HKCU\Software\Policies\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\Restrictions present

-Netster

(Before you proceed, please look at these 016 (Downloaded Program Files) of which you have many! You may check and remove any you no longer use or do not know)

Close all programs but HJT and all browser windows, then click on "Fix Checked"

6) Run CCleaner, when you run the registry cleaner (Issues) you will be prompted to backup before you can remove stuff, make sure you do. Then restart the computer and post a new HJT log and the Ewido scan results in this same thread along with any feedback you have. How are you running now??
Make sure to clean under the Windows and Applications tabs.

Thanks...pskelley

Thanks for your response! I have completed my assignments hhowever my browser continues to display "page can't be found" after only a couple of minutes.

Two trojans showed and are in C:|Windows\System32\Setup. KEENVAL.exe & NetPals.A . I also am unable to re-install my firewall & anti-spyware due to error of VSUTIL.dll not found. I have downloaded this but still have to get a download of "quick-view" to open it.

What are your thoughts?

Thanks again,
Beachbabe

Thanks for your response! I have completed my assignments hhowever my browser continues to display "page can't be found" after only a couple of minutes.

Instructions to place HJT in a permanent folder in item #1 in my last post were not followed, here is where it still is:
C:\DOCUME~1\KENTCN~1\LOCALS~1\Temp\HijackThis.exe Return to the instruction in item #1 in my first post and complete those instructions.

You missed removing the 016 item, Netster, here is some information:
http://www.spywaregu...how.php?id=1793

Two trojans showed and are in C:|Windows\System32\Setup. KEENVAL.exe & NetPals.A . I also am unable to re-install my firewall & anti-spyware due to error of VSUTIL.dll not found. I have downloaded this but still have to get a download of "quick-view" to open it.

Please explain this, what found the two trojans? I do not see anything about these items in the Ewido scan? Are the Ewido results you posted from the first scan??

VSUTIL.dll has to do with Zone Alarm, try uninstalling Zone Alarm completely from Add Remove programs and reinstalling it to see if that fixes the issue.
See this: http://www.liutiliti...library/vsutil/
It's not unusual to have to reinstall a firewall after an infection, that and your AV is the first thing they try to corrupt.

Please follow these directions once you have properly placed HJT as requested.

1) Read these instruction so you know what you are doing:
http://securityrespo...re.keenval.html
Now download and run this removal tool: http://securityrespo...er/FxKeenVl.exe

2) Use these instructions to start your computer in safe mode:
http://www.bleepingc...tutorial61.html once in safe mode run the Ewido scan again, make sure to save the scan results.

While still in safe mode:

Open HijackThis and choose "Do a system scan only" then check the box in front of these line items:

O16 - DPF: {02466323-75ED-11CF-A267-0020AF2546EA} (VivoActive Control) - http://player.vivo.com/ie/vvweb.cab
O16 - DPF: {34805D32-AD89-469E-8503-A5666AEE4333} - http://207.188.7.150...etzip/RdxIE.cab
(above is Netster, make sure you check it)
O16 - DPF: {F00F4763-7355-4725-82F7-0DA94A256D46} (IMDownloader Class) - http://www2.incredim...er/imloader.cab
(I suggest removing this, you can leave it if you use it)

Close all programs but HJT and all browser windows, then click on "Fix Checked"

Empty the recycle bin and restart the computer to the normal mode. Post a new HJT log and the results of the Ewido scan in safe mode. Post any comments you think will help and any information I requested.

Thanks...pskelley

Hello,

I hope I got things right this time-I'm trying!

After my initial post and prior to your first response I ran a "free" scan of "Trend" which showed the two trojans. Symantecs removal tool however does not find it.(?)

Zone Alarm is not listed anyplace in Add/Remove programs though I believe I may have seen some things in the registry before.

There is someone listed on my user accounts as ASP.NET, Machine A, Limited Account, Password Protected. Is it you?

Thanks again.

Hi BB, Please uderstand that I know you are doing your best as am I. It is not the easiest thing to do, make a repair like this when all we have are the tools we use like HJT and our abilities to communicate with each other.

I must say that your HJT log appears to be clean right now, and from the Ewido results run both in normal and safe mode, nothing is being located and I believe if a trojan was there that Ewido would locate it.

After my initial post and prior to your first response I ran a "free" scan of "Trend" which showed the two trojans. Symantecs removal tool however does not find it.(?)

Let's run that same free scan again and this time carefully write down all information if anything is located that Trend can't remove or quarantine. It may be that something in in the quarantine area of another program. That is why I asked if you had somehow displayed a Ewido log other than the very first one run. Ad-aware, Your Antivirus software and Ewido all have quarantine areas and Spybot has a "recovery" , you can take a look in each area and remove anything that is there. The Tread scan, as I said may tell us if there is anything to look for and where it it.

Zone Alarm is not listed anyplace in Add/Remove programs though I believe I may have seen some things in the registry before.

If you are still getting the message from ZoneAlarm, then look under Start, AllPrograms then Zone Labs, then Uninstall Zone Labs Security.
Restart your computer and then download and install the program again and see if that stops the message.

There is someone listed on my user accounts as ASP.NET, Machine A, Limited Account, Password Protected. Is it you?

When I search for ASP.NET, this is what I get: http://asp.net/Defau...index=0&tabid=1 You may want to ask Microsoft about this.

Let's also try another browser so we can isolate the issue to Internet Explorer if it is still existing. Download Firefox and try it out, save a shortcut to your Desktop and use Firefox a bit to see how it preforms. If it works well, then we will try some Internet Explorer repairs to see if you can get it working correctly.

Thanks...Phil

Sorry for the delay-I can't keep a browser open long enough to get a reply to you. I downloaded Mozilla and it works but just like IE only for about 1-2 minutes then "page cannot be displayed". I did not let it copy the IE settings. I ran another Trend scan and it found two infections but will not give me the summary so I can see if it's the same two. Maybe the summary portion requires the browser to be open and the scan takes almost one hour. So I have gone back to the ewido quarantine log and found the first scan that I did not save properly. Here are the system 32 items it found:(will not let me copy/paste) C:\Windows\System32\B02802040113.dll High Spyware BargainBuddy \cbiuninstall.exe High DialerGeneric \NLNP13.dll High Spyware.lGetNet \SHAgentNew.dll Medium Adware.saha \Xcite2.exe High SpywareFlOrganizer Does this help us? Does this help us?

Not really because I will have to believe that you would have told Ewido to delete the stuff it found or at least quarantine it. The newest Ewido log shows nothing but a couple of cookies. I will admit that I am surprised Firefox is displaying the same symptoms as IE. I will give you links to some things you can try starting with System File Checker. Perhaps a system file has been corrupted that is effecting both browsers. Give these ideas a try and let me know what happens.

I ran another Trend scan and it found two infections but will not give me the summary so I can see if it's the same two

Here are two more scans you can try if you wish:
http://www.kaspersky...anforvirus.html
http://www.pandasoft...n_principal.htm
Keep in mind how important the exact name and location is if anything is located that can't be removed. If we know where it is we can delete it manually. Thanks.

Please review this information first:
http://support.micro...241344/?sd=RMVP
Who is your ISP? it is very possible it is their fault.

Use the System File Checker method for in the first link.
http://www.theelderg.../repair_ie6.htm
http://windowsxp.mvps.org/IEFIX.htm

Since both browsers are experiencing the same issues, I am inclined to think it is something other that malware, why don't you post here:
http://forums.tomcoy...hp?showforum=83
to get others looking at the issue. Give them as much information as possible and post a link to this thread so they can see what we have done.

Thanks...Phil

Phil, You really "rock" for taking so much time to help me. I'll work on these other items and let you know how things go! My isp is Road Runner and I also suspect them and have had this discussion several times with tech reps already. Thanks, Beachbabe (Donna)

:) Thanks Donna, I am yours until we fix the problem or conclude once and for all it has noting to do with malware. I once had a long running battle with Microsoft dial up on connection issues. It turned out to be a dead anole (Florida lizard) that had killed itself on some phone wires and was shorting them out causing static that made my modem drop my signal...lol. Keep me posted and do you have Verizon DSL in your area? Thanks...Phil :wavey:

Hi Phil, Remember me?! :wavey: My ISP sent a service tech out to change out the modem & cables but it made no difference. Computer Associates (myanti-virus)have not replied to the whole firewall issue yet. Meantime I ran the "Kapersky" scan and look at this! Maybe this is the problem? Remember-Ewido and the others did not find it and one scan of Trend did. When I ran the Symantec removal tool it says not found on my pc. Hi Donna (Beachbabe) :) Where do you do your beaching at? Here's a peak at my beach:
http://www.awesomefl.../clearwater.htm

Oh well, back to work. First let me say that I wish there was a tool that would find and delete all of the bad stuff. Ewido is close, but it misses stuff to. You can run Ad-aware and Spybot will find stuff right after it, and the other way round. I hope Kaspersky removed what it found.
Why don't you email Symantec with the results, looks like they need to update their tool.

Thanks for the feedback...Phil :wavey:

Hi Phil,

I'm quite famliar with your beach! My sister has been living in Tampa for about 10 years now and just bought a home in Apollo Beach. This of course, requires her sister (me) to visit!
Here's my beach!
http://www.sunnync.com/

Well-it didn't offer to remove it. I had only done an "online" scan so guess I'd better go back and download the trial for now and do it over. Just wanted to see if there was something else I should do.

Thanks,

Donna

Right, I just picked up that scanner: http://www.kaspersky...apter=161739400 after the scan you have the option to try the free trial version. Others are starting to use this but it is new to me yet.
Without going back to look, have you run the Ewido scan in safe mode?
Have you tried this one: http://www.misec.net/trojanhunter/ it is a free trial and I often use it on 98/ME since I can't use Ewido.
Here is another possibility: http://www.hijackfree.com/en/

That looks like a great beach. I have a daughter in Reidsville, but doubt she gets to the beach often. I have beached in the area but usually prefer to get as far south as possible. While I love Clearwater Beach and only live two miles from it, this is my favorite:

Good luck...Phil

Phil, I downloaded the Kapersky "free trial". While it found all 6 it only quarantined 2 saying the others could not be "dis-infected". These are "System32" files (as shown in the copy of the scan I previously sent) and I'm beginning to think they can't be cleaned or corrected. What are your thoughts? (I can not post mine here!)
