Hmm.. don't know. This has got me stumped. Could you tell me what is in the right hand pane of this key:

Only the default.
However, I have made some progress.
Following this link - http://support.microsoft.com/default.aspx?…kb;en-us;228548 - told me to delete everything but default. That seemed to release the hidden files tab.
Following a link (in the microsoft discussion board) to this site - http://www.dougknox.com/index.html) - and using the Windows Update Disabled utility seems to have released the Windows Update.
I am still not sure if anything else has been altered.
