Around 2 days ago i opened a link from a conversation from msn messenger..
It goes like this: Rofl @ you,
I suspect it to be a virus

Since then everytime I go online, an Update.exe will appear on my task manager, followed by an "Install" icon on my desktop and a pop-up ad. If I remove it it will just keep reappearing.
Used ad-aware to remove any spyware but they also keep re-appearing.
It has all the symptoms of W32.Chod.B@mm, such as when i open HijackThis, Regedit, the applications terminate almost immediately. I can't access sites such as symantec websites.
I downloaded a free virus scan, comodo virus scan, however it can never complete a full system scan, always terminating at a certain point around 8minutes into the scan.
I can't do online scans also.

I saw a similar post in this forum by addman which has all the symptoms i have, however when i followed the steps i could not solve the virus. Such as not being able to find and delete stuff that was supposed to be deleted through Registrarlite, such as HKEY_CLASSES_ROOT\Chode and the rest.

I have 2 user accounts on my desktop, 1 for me and 1 for my sis, both administrators.
However when i restart in safe mode, i can only choose from 2 user accounts, which is Administrator and [My sister's ID]. Mine has disappeared. Here is the Hijackthis log when I use my Sister's ID in safe mode.

Im at my wit's end, please help asap :(
Hi - When you post a HijackThis log in Safe Mode, it does not show everything that loads in Normal Mode because Safe Mode only loads basic drivers, etc. So, please post back with a HijackThis log run in Normal Mode. Since you've already posted your sister's account in Safe Mode, sign onto her account and post back with a HijackThis log while in Normal Mode.
Okay. Just follow these steps in the order stated - this is important!

You will need to print or copy these instructions because you will be working in Safe Mode without an Internet connection.

• Download SDFix and save it to your Desktop.
Reboot into SAFE MODE.
To get into the Windows XP Safe Mode, restart your computer and, just before Windows starts to load, tap the F8 key a few times. Choose Safe Mode from the menu that will appear and press Enter.
- Choose your sister's user account.
  • In Safe Mode, right-click the SDFix.zip folder and choose Extract All,
  • Open the extracted folder and double click RunThis.bat to start the script.
  • Type Y to begin the script.
  • It will remove the Trojan Services then make some repairs to the registry and prompt you to press any key to Reboot.
  • Press any Key and it will restart the PC.
  • Your system will take longer that normal to restart as the fixtool will be running and removing files.
  • When the desktop loads the Fixtool will complete the removal and display Finished, then press any key to end the script and load your desktop icons.
  • Finally open the SDFix folder on your desktop and copy and paste the contents of the results file Report.txt in your next reply.

• Download and install AVG Anti-Spyware 7.5.
(This is Ewdio 4.0 renamed. If you already have Ewido installed, please update to this version which has a special "clean driver" for removing persistent malware)
1. After download, double click on the file to launch the install process.
2. Choose a language, click "OK" and then click "Next".
3. Read the "License Agreement" and click "I Agree".
4. Accept default installation path: C:\Program Files\Grisoft\AVG Anti-Spyware 7.5, click "Next", then click "Install".
5. After setup completes, click "Finish" to start the program automatically or launch AVG Anti-Spyware by double-clicking its icon on your desktop or in the system tray.
6. The main "Status" menu will appear. Select "Change state" to inactivate 'Resident Shield' and 'Automatic Updates'.
7. Then right click on AVG Anti-Spyware in the system tray and uncheck "Start with Windows".
8. Go to Start > Run and type: services.msc
  • Press "OK".
  • Click the "Extended tab" and scroll down the list to find AVG Anti-Spyware guard.
  • When you find the guard service, double-click on it.
  • In the Properties Window > General Tab that opens, click the "Stop" button.
  • From the drop-down menu next to "Startup Type", click on "Manual".
  • Now click "Apply", then "OK" and close the Services window.
9. Select the "Update" button and click "Start update". Wait until you see the "Update succesfull message. If you are having problems with the updater, manually update with the AVG Anti-Spyware Full database installer from here. Exit AVG Anti-Spyware when done - DO NOT perform a scan yet.

Next, reboot into SAFE MODE.
To get into the Windows XP Safe Mode, restart your computer and, just before Windows starts to load, tap the F8 key a few times. Choose Safe Mode from the menu that will appear and press Enter.

Now, scan with AVG Anti-Spyware as follows:
1. Launch AVG Anti-Spyware, click on the "Scanner" button and choose the "Settings" tab.
  • Under "How to act?", click on "Recommended actions" and choose "Quarantine" to set default action for detected malware.
  • Under "How to Scan?" check all (default).
  • Under "Possibly unwanted software" check all (default).
  • Under "What to Scan?" make sure "Scan every file" is selected (default).
  • Under "Reports" select "Automatically generate report after every scan" and UNcheck "Only if threats were found".
2. Click the "Scan" tab to return to scanning options.
3. Click "Complete System Scan" to start.
4. When the scan has finished you will be presented with a list of infected objects found. Click "Apply all actions" to place the files in Quarantine.

IMPORTANT!Do not save the report before you have clicked the Apply all actions button. If you do, the log that is created will indicate "No action taken", making it more difficult to interpret the report. So be sure you save it only AFTER clicking the "Apply all actions" button?

5. Click on "Save Report" to view all completed scans. Click on the most recent scan you just performed and select "Save report as" - the default file name will be in date/time format as follows: Report-Scan-20060620-142816.txt. Save to your desktop. A copy of each report will also be saved in C:\Program Files\Grisoft\AVG Anti-Spyware 7.5\Reports\
6. Exit AVG Anti-Spyware when done, reboot normally and submit the log report in your next response.
Note: Close all open windows, programs, and DO NOT USE the computer while AVG Anti-Spyware is scanning. If Explorer or other programs are open during the scan that means certain files will also be in use. Some malware will insert itself and hide in areas that are "protected" by Windows when the files are being used. This can hamper AVG Anti-Spyware's ability to clean properly and may result in reinfection.

• Download Combofix: http://download.bleepingcomputer.com/sUBs/combofix.exe
and save to the Desktop.

1. Double click on combo.exe & follow the prompts.
2. When finished, it will produce a logfile located at C:\ComboFix.txt.
3. Post the contents of that log in your next reply with a new hijackthis log.

Notes:
* Do not mouse-click combofix's window while it is running. That may cause your system to stall/hang.
* If you cannot run combofix in Normal Mode, reboot into Safe Mode and run it in Safe Mode.

• Post back with:
- SDFix's Report.txt
- AVG Anti-Spyware log
- combofix.txt log
- and a new HijackThis log (a log from Safe Mode is okay for now if you still can't run HijackThis in Normal Mode)

3. At the SUPERAntiSpyware Main Menu, click the Preferences button,
4. Click the General and Startup tab, under Start-Up Options, uncheck these two boxes: Start SUPERAntiSpyware when Windows starts and Show SUPERAntiSpyware icon in system tray
5. Click the Hi-Jack Protection tab and, under Home Page Protection, uncheck these two boxes: Display notification when home page changed and Protect home page from being changed. Changes can be made only here.
6. Click Close at the bottom of the page.
7. Exit the program.
Do NOT run SUPERAntiSpyware yet.

• Reboot into SAFE MODE.
To get into the Windows XP Safe Mode, restart your computer and, just before Windows starts to load, tap the F8 key a few times. Choose Safe Mode from the menu that will appear and press Enter.

[In Safe Mode]
• Open the SUPERAntiSpyware program.
1. At the SUPERAntiSpyware Main Menu, under Scan for Harmful Software, click the Scan your Computer button, and the SUPERAntiSpyware Scanner menu will appear.

Hi -

We're getting there, but we still have several steps to do. Your system was badly infected.

Now that things seem to be working better in Normal Mode, you need to install both an Anti-Virus program and a software firewall on your computer. Surfing the Net without these nowadays almost guarantees that you'll get infected. Also, Windows XP's firewall only blocks incoming traffic, not outgoing traffic, so it's limited in its protection.

• So, download and install Active Virus Shield and update it.
Note: Never install more than one Anti-Virus scanner on your system! Having more than one Anti-Virus installed will likely cause your system to become unstable and seriously decrease the reliable detection of any malware.
Perform a full scan and let it delete everything it finds.

• Now download and install Kerio 2.1.5
See, Understanding and Using Firewalls

• Please post the report.txt from SUPERAntiSpyware. I would like to see it because it will provide me with information regarding the different types of malware it found.
- Navigate to C:\Program Files\SUPERAntiSpyware\Logs
- In the Logs folder, you will see the log of the scan you performed by the date.
- Open it and copy/paste the contents in your next reply.

• Next, do the following:
  • Please click Start > Run > and type Regedit
  • Click OK and wait for the Registry Editor to open
  • Now, please click on File and then Export
  • This will bring up the Export Registry File window
  • At the bottom of which you will see an option for Export range
  • Click the option for Selected branch and in the field underneath that, copy and paste:
    HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows NT\CurrentVersion\Windows
  • Enter a file name of APPTDLL and save the file to your Desktop
  • Now go to your Desktop, right-click on the file you have created, select Open With and choose Notepad.
  • Now please copy the contents of that file in your next reply.
• Re-name HijackThis.exe to kitty.com by doing the following:
- Navigate to C:\Program Files\Hijackthis\HijackThis.exe
- Right-click onto HijackThis.exe and select "Rename"
- Type kitty.com and hit Enter.
- When you post back with a new HijackThis log, just double-click kitty.com.

• Post back with the log from SUPERAntiSpyware, the contents of registry key export and a new HiJackThis log.

Also, the O17 entry in your log is confusing.
The first IP address listed (161.21.83.88) points to the Michigan Education Special Serivices Association in Michigan - it's spelled "Serivices" instead of "Services".
The second IP address ([removed]), however, points to "Owner of Domains" which is an Internet Service Provider and is located in Singapore.
Are you familiar with these two IP addresses/companies?

Hi -

• Start HijackThis, click System Scan Only and place a checkmark next to the following item:
O20 - AppInit_DLLs: \\?\C:\WINDOWS\com8.ffc

Close ALL browsers and open windows/programs leaving just HijackThis and click 'Fix Checked'.

• Download the Gromozon Removal Tool
- Save it to the Desktop.
- Run the Gromozon Removal Tool, and click Scan.
- Once an infection is located, it will notify you of the removal of the infection and that your computer will reboot.
- Allow it to restart and wait for the tool to finish its job.
- It will then create the C:\armada_log.txt . Please post this in your next reply along with a new HijackThis log.
Hi drizzt - While I'm waiting for your reply, please delete ComboFix. While your computer was not damaged by ComboFix, the tool has since been compromised, and the creator of ComboFix has pulled it. So, delete the following folders: ComboFix (on your desktop) C:\ComboFix.txt C:\rename_this_folder_back_to_sUBs_
I couldnt find C:\armada_log.txt, however I found C:\gromozon_removal.txt, below is the log.

If you did any online transactions on this computer such as online banking, online transactions, etc., I strongly suggest that you change your passwords at any sensitive websites when we are done.
