I believe my computer, which is a Dell will the Dell Security Centre – both purchased in January 2005, was infected by my daughter opening an attachment to an MSM message called piccy. Suspiciously, around the time she would have been on the computer a file named MSIInstall appeared. This may all be a red herring.

On shutting down the following files throw up ‘end task’ – GDWH, CSNSS, svhost and sgtray.

The symptoms are that all virus/spyware programs automatically close as soon as they are opened. This includes internet sites, such as McAfee, and programs on removable drives. This also happens in safemode. Restore and hidden files have been disabled.

Adware SE and hijackthis seem to work. Unfortunately Adware SE cannot resolve the problem. The log file of hijackthis is below:

Make sure that you have no browser windows open as this could prevent the fix from working properly. Open HijackThis>Config>Misc Tools and update to v1.99.1, scan and when complete, remove the following entries by checking the box to the left and clicking 'fixed checked':

F2 - REG:system.ini: UserInit=C:\WINDOWS\system32\userinit.exe,C:\WINDOWS\system32\mcsv.com

All the O1 entries

O4 - HKLM\..\Run: [Preview AdService] C:\Program Files\Preview AdService\PrevAdServ.exe
O4 - HKLM\..\Run: [SDAv] C:\WINDOWS\svhost.exe
O4 - HKLM\..\Run: [NDAv] C:\WINDOWS\system32\csnss.exe
O4 - HKCU\..\Run: [SDAv] C:\WINDOWS\svhost.exe

Exit HijackThis when done. Reboot into Safe Mode by tapping F8 after the BIOS has loaded. Using Windows Explorer, find and delete the following:

C:\Program Files\Preview AdService\ <– folder
C:\WINDOWS\svhost.exe
C:\WINDOWS\system32\csnss.exe

Exit Explorer and reboot into Normal Mode. Rescan with HijackThis and post a new log here.
Many thanks for your advice. Apologies for the delay - I had to access another computer to read your advice.

I am now up and running and have run a number (lots) of virus/spyware programs (McAfee identified 7 W32 worms, but failed to clean, delete or quarantine).

The hijackthis log file is now as follows:

Restore and access to hidden files are still disabled, although I am theorectically the 'Administrator'.

Last time I shut down a file called 'shellconhiddenwindow' was looking to endtask.

PLease let me know if you can help me with this, or whether I should contact Dell.

Once again, many thanks for your help. I will of course make a donation.

Regards

Colin
It's looking better - let's see what else is lurking there. Click here to download eScan's mwav application. Double-click it to run it, select all local drives, scan all files, press 'scan' and when it is completed, anything found will be displayed in the lower pane. Highlight it, CTRL C and paste it in your next reply.
There were 10 viruses and 211 errors, which I think may have been generated from Documents and Settings, but I am not absolutely sure. The viruses were: File C:\PROGRA~1\MSNMES~1\RICHED20.dll infected by "not-a-virus:AdWare.ToolBar.MyWebSearch" Virus. Action Taken: No Action Taken. File C:\WINDOWS\system32\f3PSSavr.scr infected by "not-a-virus:AdWare.ToolBar.MyWebSearch" Virus. Action Taken: No Action Taken. File C:\WINDOWS\system32\temp.exe infected by "not-a-virus:AdWare.WinAD.ab" Virus. Action Taken: No Action Taken. File C:\l0ser.Html infected by "IM-Worm.Win32.Sumom.c" Virus. Click here to download Pocket Killbox by Option^Explicit. Extract it from the zip file to your desktop.

Start Killbox and click on Tools->Delete Temp Files. When that finishes, copy and paste each of the following lines into the "Full Path of File to Delete" box in Killbox, and click the red button with the white X on it after each. Keep track of any files it tells you either could not be found or could not be deleted, as you'll need those later:

C:\l0ser.Html
C:\Program Files\MSN Messenger\riched20.dll
C:\setup.exe
C:\WINDOWS\SYSTEM32\f3PSSavr.scr
C:\WINDOWS\SYSTEM32\temp.exe

For the files that it either couldn't find or couldn't delete, in the killbox again this time, put a mark next to "Delete on Reboot". Copy and paste each file into the file name box, then click the red button with the X after each. It will ask you if you want to reboot each time you click it, answer NO until after you've pasted the last file name, at which time you should answer Yes.

Reboot if it doesn't do so automatically. Post a new mwav scan in your next reply.
The results of the scan are now as follows: File C:\!Submit\f3PSSavr.scr infected by "not-a-virus:AdWare.ToolBar.MyWebSearch" Virus. Action Taken: No Action Taken. File C:\!Submit\l0ser.Html infected by "IM-Worm.Win32.Sumom.c" Virus. Action Taken: No Action Taken. File C:\!Submit\riched20.dll infected by "not-a-virus:AdWare.ToolBar.MyWebSearch" Virus. Action Taken: No Action Taken. File C:\!Submit\setup.exe infected by "Trojan-Dropper.Win32.Agent.gk" Virus. Action Taken: No Action Taken. File C:\!Submit\temp.exe infected by "not-a-virus:AdWare.WinAD.ab" Virus. Action Taken: No Action Taken. File C:\Program Files\AOL 9.0\Jiti\Jiti_mm.exe tagged as not-a-virus:Tool.Win32.Reboot. No Action Taken. File C:\Program Files\Dell\Media Experience\Extension\WTGames\InstallWT.exe infected by "not-a-virus:AdWare.WinAD" Virus. Action Taken: No Action Taken. Regards Colin
Probably better than it has since I purchased the computer in January. Many thanks for your invaluable help. The only remaining issue seems to be my inability, as administrator, to access restore and hidden files. Is this something I need to pursue with Dell? Unfortunately I might be back again shortly, as my daughter returns from University this weekend, complete with virus written machine. Hopefully I can apply the same logic you have taken me through over the past couple of days to eradicate most of the viruses. Colin
Thanks for that - this side effect is new to me. Try something for me. Click here to download xphidden.zip. Extract xphidden.reg from the zip file and save it to the desktop. When done, double click the xphidden.reg and when asked to merge say yes.

Let me know if the hidden files can be accessed now.
Try something for me. Click Start>Run type regedit >OK and navigate to:

HKEY_USERS\.DEFAULT\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Policies\Explorer

Let me know what is in the right hand pane of that key. Don't delete anything.
ab (default) REG_SZ (value not set) ? NoDriverTypeAutoRun REG_DWORD 0x00000091(145) ab is a tab with red letters ab ? is a tab with blue numbers - looks like - 011 110 Colin
I don't know whether this is connected, but Windows Update appears to be disabled. Greyed out are: Install updates View install history Settings Restore hidden updates Colin
