Hi there I hope some kind soul will take pity on me. This is like being the new kid at school, on his first day. I don't even know if this is in the right forum. I'm not a PC expert, but I do know my way around well enough to solve most problems. If I don't know the answer, I can usually work it out. But rather than blunder, i thought I'd ask advice first. My computer has been infected with a virus (my first in five years). I'm running McAfee virus scanner (with latest updates) and a Symantec Firewall on a P3 450 (Packard Bell). Windows 98. I believe the virus is downloader-fl, although McAfee is only picking up bbb.exe and winfavorites.exe as recognised virus files. However, it is unable to delete them. The firewall is preventing winfavorites from making any contact with the internet. I've tried running SpyBot, booting in Safe Mode to remove all suspect files (including Download Plus - which I assume is related to downloader-fl), manually attempting to remove all infected files... but when I reboot, the problem reappears. I assume that the virus is either written into the System folder, invisible, or written into a system backup that reinfects when the machine is turned on. The virus is written into areas that I don't know how to delete - such as system files. (Why do people write virrii like this - what is wrong with these people?) Anyway, rather than letting me stumble on in the dark, any advice about what I should do or how to tackle the problem would be much appreciated. My apologies if I appear to be a bit of a doofus. Just point me in the right direction and put me out of my misery. Many thanks

Could you download HijackThis, create a new folder called C:\HijackThis, extract the HijackThis.exe file from the zip file into the new folder and run it from there to scan your computer. This is necessary to ensure you have backups should anything go wrong.

When the scan is finished, the "Scan" button will change into a "Save Log" button. Save the log, Ctrl-A to Select All and post it here for examination. Don't fix anything yet as most of what it lists will be harmless.

Thanks for the reply. Yes, I will do that. I'm at work at the moment, so it'll have to wait until I get home. Last night I booted my computer in safe mode and ran McAfee virus scanner, SpyBotS&D as well as Trojan Hunter v3.8. I removed the downloader-fl, winfavorites and bbb.exe infections, plus some other spyware. McAfree reported detecting 20 files, but only deleted 19. Trojan Hunter detected Little Witch 6.2 and goes through the motions of deleting it, but the trojan returns when the computer is rebooted (at least, another pass by Trojan Hunter detects it in HOTKEYS). HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Run "Rundll" I'm assuming Little Witch is the file McAfee didn't/couldn't delete. I'll run HijackThis at the earliest opportunity and post the results here. Many thanks

Hi

Here is the scan file.

TrojanHunter tells me that I have the Little Witch trojan

The registry Scan says:

Registry value exists: HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Run\Rundll (matches LittleWitch.621)

However, Download Plus, which I thought I had got rid of (it appeared at the same time as the original infection) has also reappeared.

A shortcut lives in the Windows\Star Menu\Programs\Startup
(The MS-DOS name is DOWNLO~1.LNK)

The Download Plus exe file seems to live in "C:\WINDOWS\Profiles\janey&rob\Application Data\DownloadPlus.exe"

If I check on the properties of the Download Plus exe file, I get this:

Comments: FOFFSET=0;BRAND=lminv1;AFFILIATE_ID=803054XXXXXXXXXXXXXXXX
Company: PornKings
version 1.06

The program shows itself as a circular icon made up of two arrows in the toolbar bar. In the task bar it shows up as another name - something like Inmsngr1 (or something like that - sorry to be vague but it's not open at the moment so I can't check it)

Many thanks for any help you can give me

Regards

Make sure that you have no other browsers or windows open as this could prevent the fix from working properly. Open HijackThis, scan and when complete, remove the following entries by checking the box to the left and clicking 'fixed checked':

Thanks Daemon.

I really appreciate your help.

I followed your instructions, although there was no MYWEBS~1 or BRIDGE.DLL to delete. Everything else went as instructed.

Here is the new HJT log

Many thanks again

Looks good. There's just one thing I'd like to check, could you find:

c:\windows\system\mswsosp.dll

zip it up and send it to this e-mail address including a link to this thread in the body of the email. It may be OK but I'd like to take a closer look at it - I'll get back to you about it if any further action is required.

Many thanks Daemon I'll do that when I get home (about 10 hours). Just one last question. TrojanHunter3.8 gives me this message: Registry value exists: HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Run\Rundll (matches LittleWitch.621) Is this anything to worry about? Does this mean I have Little Witch, or does "matches LittleWitch.621" just mean that the WIndows file performs a similar function to LittleWitch and the scanner can't tell them apart? Regards

Does TH give you the option to submit the file for analysis? If so, do that and they should get back to you to let you know whether it is a false positive or a real bad boy.
