Hello!

I've been having problems surfing the web with IE (version 6.0) as some websites take more than a minute or so to load while others load instantly. This is becoming very annoying and it has never happened before. ANy help would be greatly appreciated. Here's the HighjackThis log info:

Restart your computer.

Press F8 after the Power-On Self Test (POST) is done. If the Windows Advanced Options Menu does not appear, try restarting and then pressing F8 several times after the POST screen.
Choose the Safe Mode option from the Windows Advanced Options Menu then press Enter.


Double-click My Computer.
Click the Tools menu, and then click Folder Options.
Click the View tab.
Clear "Hide file extensions for known file types."
Under the "Hidden files" folder, select "Show hidden files and folders."
Clear "Hide protected operating system files."
Click Apply, and then click OK.


Open C:\Windows\Prefetch\ Delete ALL files in this folder.


Do this also if these Temp Folders are part of your OS.

Also in safe mode navigate to the C:\Windows\Temp folder. Open the Temp folder and go to Edit > Select All then Edit > Delete to delete the entire contents of the Temp folder.


Next navigate to the C:\Documents and Settings\(EVERY LISTED USER)\Local Settings\Temp folder. Open the Temp folder and go to Edit > Select All then Edit > Delete to delete the entire contents of the Temp folder.

Finally go to Control Panel > Internet Options. On the General tab under "Temporary Internet Files" Click "Delete Files". Put a check by "Delete Offline Content" and click OK. Click on the Programs tab then click the "Reset Web Settings" button. Click Apply then OK.


Empty the Recycle Bin

Reboot and "copy/paste" a new HijackThis log file into this thread.

Thanks for your help!

Find the latest HJT log below.

The problem's still there. There are websites were the pages load extremely slowly. For example, it took 40 second for a page to load on IMDB.com and about 25 seconds on allmusic.com. These are only 2 example. Some websites load instantly with no wait.

When I access those above-mentionned website from my laptop, there's no loading wait. The pages load immediately. That's why I know there's something wrong with my PC. And it's not the connection since my laptop shares the same connection than my PC through a wireless router.

Please download ewido Security Suite
  • Install ewido security suite
  • When installing, under "Additional Options" uncheck "Install background guard" and "Install scan via context menu."
  • Launch ewido, there should be a big "E" icon on your desktop, double-click it.
  • The program will prompt you to update click the "OK" button
  • The program will now go to the main screen

    You will need to update ewido to the latest definition files.
  • On the left hand side of the main screen click update
  • Click on Start

    The update will start and a progress bar will show the updates being installed. After the updates are installed, exit ewido.

    Once the updates are installed do the following:
  • If you have an "always on" connection to the internet, physically disconnect that connection until you are finished with Safe Mode and have rebooted back into normal mode.
  • Reboot into Safe Mode, you can do this by restarting your computer, then contiunally tapping F8 until a menu appears. Use your up arrow key to highlight Safe Mode, then hit enter. Then, run ewido.
  • Close all open windows/programs/folders. Have nothing else open while ewido performs its scan!
  • Click on scanner
  • Click on Settings
    • Under "How to scan" all boxes should be selected
    • Under "Possibly unwanted software" all boxes should be selected
    • Under "What to scan" select scan every file
    • Click OK
  • Click on Complete system scan
  • Let the program scan the machine
  • If ewido finds anything, it will pop up a notification. NOTE: We have been finding some cases of false positives with the new version of Ewido, so we need to step through the fixes one-by-one. If Ewido finds something that you KNOW is legitimate (for example, parts of AVG Antivirus, AOL, pcAnywhere and the game "Risk" have been flagged. In particular, watch for alerts that have the word "Heuristic" in them - if you recognize the file name as "friendly," these may actually be false positives) select "none" as the action. DO NOT check "Perform action with all infections." If you are unsure of an entry, select "none" for the time being. I'll see that in the log you will post later and let you know if ewido needs to be run again.

    Once the scan has completed, there will be a button located on the bottom of the screen named Save report.
  • Click Save report
  • Save the report to your desktop
  • Exit ewido

Restart your computer in normal mode and please post a new HijackThis log, as well as the log from the Ewido scan.

Log looks good  :D  :thumbup: How is it running any issues?

Thanks for the help! I'm glad the log looks good. The problem's still there, sadly. :( Pages take a while on some site to load. Even cnn.com: took 45 seconds to load a simple news page (http://www.cnn.com/2005/WEATHER/08/13/weat…rene/index.html). I fear I'll have to format my HD but I was hoping I wouldn't have to come to that extreme :unsure:

Lets try some cleaning tools first:


I recommend you download RegSeeker. Extract it to it's own folder, open and double click RegSeeker.exe to start the program. Maximize the window and click clean registry. Check all sections and click OK. When the scan is complete, verify the backup box in lower left corner is checked and click the select all button, then select all again. Then right click within the search results and select delete. Run it again and again, deleting everything it finds until it finds nothing. Reboot and make sure your programs are working properly, control panel and add/remove programs windows open, etc (basically just do a quick check of everything). In the event anything was 'broken', you can open RegSeeker, click backups and double click any/all files to put the information back. A reboot may be required for the effects to be seen. Reboot When done.

Lets try this:

To use it:
  • Download CCleaner from http://www.ccleaner.com/ and install.
  • Open CCleaner.
  • Place a check by everything in the Applications tab.
  • Place a check by Internet Explorer, Windows explorer, and System in the Windows tab.
  • Hit the button that says Run CCleaner
  • Reboot to remove index.dat files.


1.Uncheck "Cookies" under "Internet Explorer".

2.if user is running Firefox: ,then click on the "Applications" tab and uncheck "Cookies" under "Firefox".

3.Click on Run Cleaner in the lower right-hand corner. This can take quite a while to run.

Reboot and "copy/paste" a new log file into this thread.
Also please describe how your computer behaves at the moment.




[*]Reboot into Safe Mode, you can do this by restarting your computer, then contiunally tapping F8 until a menu appears. Use your up arrow key to highlight Safe Mode, then hit enter. Then, run ewido.


[*]Close all open windows/programs/folders. Have nothing else open while ewido performs its scan!


[*]Click on scanner

[*]Click on Settings
  • Under "How to scan" all boxes should be selected
  • Under "Possibly unwanted software" all boxes should be selected
  • Under "What to scan" select scan every file
  • Click OK

[*]Click on Complete system scan

[*]Let the program scan the machine


[*]If ewido finds anything, it will pop up a notification. NOTE: We have been finding some cases of false positives with the new version of Ewido, so we need to step through the fixes one-by-one. If Ewido finds something that you KNOW is legitimate (for example, parts of AVG Antivirus, AOL, pcAnywhere and the game "Risk" have been flagged. In particular, watch for alerts that have the word "Heuristic" in them - if you recognize the file name as "friendly," these may actually be false positives) select "none" as the action. DO NOT check "Perform action with all infections." If you are unsure of an entry, select "none" for the time being. I'll see that in the log you will post later and let you know if ewido needs to be run again.


Once the scan has completed, there will be a button located on the bottom of the screen named Save report.

Restart your computer in normal mode and please post a new HijackThis log, as well as the log from the Ewido scan.

Lets get rid of everything you don't need then.
Keep in mind these aren't bad and are Optional fixes.

Do you use Aim, Quicken, ICQ ?

I removed some of the programs I don't use/need and my PC works fine now. I guess one of those programs was the cause of my problem and I feel bad I made you go through all this work trying to help me. I appreciate your help though 'cause I would've never thought of removing installed programs in the first place. I was sure it was something else. Thanks again, Andre
