Hello,
I ran hijackthis nd got the following log. The main problem I have is Searchmiracle pages opening up every few minutes. Yesterday I lfet my computer running all afternoon and returned to find 65 searchmiracle pages open on my desktop. Explorer wasn't even open. I know everyone says this, but I've tried every leading spyware/adware/virus program on the market. My computer is always running Norton Auto-Protect.

Any help would be greatly appreciated. And if you could warn me about what to do online to prevent this in the future.

Thanks,
Phil

Hi tinpanalley,

first i would print this out or copy it to a text file somewhere so you can get to it, as we will be in SAFE MODE. also before starting pull the plug on your modem.
———————————-
ok we will use hjt, boot to safe mode, delete files

make sure files are set to show:

for xp:
FOr XP: on the desktop double click my computer,go to tools>folder options>view> then select "show hidden files and folders", then UNcheck "hide protected operating system files " also UNcheck "hide extensions for known file types" click apply to all folders, apply then ok
———————————-
scan with HJT, put a checkmark beside the items below, close all windows and click fix checked

R0 - HKLM\Software\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\Search,SearchAssistant = http://www.begin2search.com/sidesearch.html

R3 - Default URLSearchHook is missing

O4 - HKLM\..\Run: [Win32] C:\Win32\dll\Win32k.exe -starthide C:\Win32\dll\Win32.exe -local

O4 - HKLM\..\Run: [oqyvgz] C:\WINDOWS\system32\kygrjcc.exe
O4 - HKLM\..\Run: [satmat] C:\WINDOWS\satmat.exe
O4 - HKLM\..\Run: [antiware] C:\windows\system32\elitecln32.exe
O4 - HKLM\..\Run: [SheduIer] C:\WINDOWS\svchst.exe /i

O4 - HKLM\..\Run: [offerp01.exe] "C:\DOCUME~1\PHILVA~1\LOCALS~1\Temp\offerp01.exe" 1098670072 1100962707

O4 - HKLM\..\Run: [jatolwr] C:\WINDOWS\jatolwr.exe
O4 - HKLM\..\Run: [hphnmv] C:\WINDOWS\System32\kygrjcc.exe
———————————-
ok now boot computer into SAFE MODE by tapping the f8 key during a restart, chose safe mode from the options, once in safe mode:
delete these, some may be gone, dont worry if you cant find them:

delete this >>kygrjcc.exe>>lolcated here>>C:\WINDOWS\system32
>>elitecln32.exe>> " " "

delete this>satmat.exe>>located here>>C:\windows\system32

delete svchst.exe /i located here>>C:\WINDOWS (—->notice spelling THIS one is ok:C:\WINDOWS\system32\svchost.exe)

delete just>jatolwr.exe>located here>>C:\WINDOWS
———————————
also in safe mode do this:

Click Start>Run then type %temp%
Hit OK. Delete all the files you can.

Empty your Temp folders. Go to Start > Run and type:cleanmgr. Windows will scan. When done check these 3 and press *ok* to remove:

Temporary Files
Temporary Internet Files
Recycle Bin

using explorer(right click on start>explore) drill down to these >>> you want to delete whats >inside< the folder, not the folder itself<<

C:\Windows\Temp\

C:\Documents and Settings\-Your Profile-\Local Settings\Temporary Internet Files\ (will dump all your cached internet content including cookies)

C:\Documents and Settings\-Your Profile-\Local Settings\Temp\

C:\Documents and Settings\-Any other users Profile-\Local Settings\Temporary Internet Files\

C:\Documents and Settings\-Any other users Profile-\Local Settings\Temp\

click start->settings->control panel->internet options->programs tab->RESET WEB SETTINGS
———————————-
ok now plug modem back in and reboot computer normally.
rescan with hjt and post a new hjt log……………..
Hello again,
I followed your instructions to the letter. Here is the log of the scan after the fixes you suggested…and please, what can I do to prevent this in the future? Is Ad-aware SE and Norton enough?

Take care,
Phil

hello tinpanalley, few more: good work. look in add/remove prograsms panel and uninstall: altnet or could be called points manager or AltnetPointsManager next run hjt once more and select these: O4 - HKLM\..\Run: [AltnetPointsManager] c:\program files\altnet\points manager\points manager.exe -s O4 - HKLM\..\Run: [antiware] C:\windows\system32\elitecln32.exe ————————— ok now boot computer into safe mode by tapping the f8 key at restart chose safe mode, once in safe mode delete these: altnet>>delete entire folder located here>>c:\program files elitecln32.exe>>delete just that file here>>C:\windows\system32 —————————- reboot normally, rescan and post new hjt log. there are some things you can do. i will leave my "speech" once we are finished. ok ………….shelf life
Ok shelf, after the second fix, this is the log. Consequently, there was no trace of Altnet, but I do remember deleting that program entirely. It comes with Kazaa which I got rid of months ago. There also wasn't any trace of elitecln32.exe in the windows\system32 folder but there were a couple of other files similarly named and after making sure they weren't part of anything that looked familiar, I deleted them. Also, there was one folder named "elitebar" which I also deleted. I found these by running a search. Anyway, here's the log as of 5 minutes ago.

Thanks,
Phil

other than that looks good——>

Please follow a few tips to remain malware free:

Make sure you keep your Windows OS current by visiting Windows update
occasionaly to download and install any critical updates and service packs. With out these you are leaving the backdoor open.

Also download, install and keep updated- Antivirus Software (and use only one):
Free for home users:
avast! 4 Home Edition Download
AVG free version 7.0 AVG free version v6.0 updates ended 12/31/04
AntiVir Personal Edition

Adjust your browser settings: Change your(active x) settings in IE. With IE open go to tools, internet options, security tab. Click on the internet globe, then custom level. Set the first option "download signed active x controls" to prompt, the next two to disable. Read more:
Internet Explorer Privacy & Security Settings
Working with Internet Explorer 6 Security
Many exploits are directed at Internet Explorer, you dont have to use it. Try a different browser:
Like Firefox,
And Pegasus Mail for a safer e-mail client.

Install a firewall. A firewall will control what comes in from the internet and what leaves your computer to the internet. A firewall will also alert you when a application trys to connect to the internet from your computer, this is a good way to catch crapware or trojans, trying to connect out bound from your computer- whats that and why does it need a internet connection? You can deny it access it until more investigation is done. Zone Alarm is a free and easy to use firewall, that will provide in and outbound protection. Microsoft XP firewall only provides inbound protection. SP2 adds in and out bound protection which is better than nothing, but is not as robust as third party firewalls, Be sure to run only >one< firewall. If you use another, be sure to disable XP's built in firewall.A inexpensive NAT hardware router with SPI (firewall)would be even better, along with a software firewall.
Zone Alarm
Kerio Personal Firewall
Outpost Firewall

Download, install and update before using:(if these are constantly finding malware, then you need to make some changes)
Ad-Aware SE Personal edition
Spybot Search and destroy
Becarful with spyware "removers and scanners"– there are many "rogue/suspect" programs that "claim to remove" spyware.

Other programs to consider:
SpywareBlaster
IE-SPYAD
AntiTrojan software to fill in the gap:
a2 free
Ewido Security Suite
Trojan Hunter (30 day trial version)

Watch what you download, and where you download it from. Many programs come bundled with "extra" crapware you may not want. Make sure you know what it is you will be downloading and installing. Visit the makers website, learn more about the program, Does the program you want come bundled with other "3rd party" programs? What do the 3rd party programs do? Will they deliver ads? Track your surfing habits?.You may be installing more than you think, Read the EULA agreement, you know that paragraph of stuff you "agree to" before the software installs? Stay away from warez and crack sites. Becarful what you download from file sharing networks. If you are not sure, scan it with your Antivirus app. A small file (in KB) is probably not what you think it is. Some p2p clients also install 3rd party stuff you probably dont want.If you search hard enough you can usually find a "clean" alternative to any software.
