Hello to whomever can provide help,

I have recently had my IE hijacked by the HomeSearch assistant, which changes my about:blank homepage to the homesearch search website. I also think there may be some other trojans or viruses on my computer that Norton and AVG 7.0 are not deleting/detecting fully for some reason. In any event, here is the HijackThis log that I just ran. I am new to HijackThis, so please bare with me if I need to ask questions on what you mean in your instructions. Thanks in advance!

Hi welcome to TOM COYOTE FORUMS

You are currently using hijackthis from a temp directory. When you do fixes with hijackthis, backups are made and these allow fixes to be reversed in case anything goes wrong. Since you are running hijackthis from a temp directory, the backups can be deleted when you empty the temp directory. Please create a permanent directory on your c: drive say c:\hijackthis and move hijackthis into that directory. Run the program from that directory from now on. More instructions for creating a permanent directory below.
Hold down windows key and press e at the same time. A 'my computer' windows should pop up. Next double click on your local disk (likely to be C:) Right click in the main window(the one on the right) select new then folder. A folder will be created. Rename the folder to hijackthis. Next navigate into the directory that you ran hijackthis. Right click on the hijackthis icon and select cut. Go back into the directory that you just created right click and select paste.

Please download and run Adaware SE & Spybot Then follow the instructions in the link below to run.

I checked my IE and the hijack is still present. Although the website is practically the same (http://quickmetasearch.com/?said=acc0002_ho), the website has changed from "HomeSearch" to "Search in Web." This happened before I ran all of the above programs. Thanks again for your help and any further assistance.

Find and delete the following folders
DO NOT WORRY if you do not find them

C:\Program Files\STHomePage <— ignore if you added this

After that REBOOT scan with hijackthis and
POST a new log in this thread using 'Add Reply'
Hello again,

After doing the above, my IE opened up with about:blank as the homepage! But I will post the log as you asked just in case you still see something suspicious. If not, thank you SO MUCH. Oh, and I have no idea what the STHomePage thing was, so I assume I did not add it. Therefore, I did fix it and delete the folder.

Edit: I just noticed three lines below involving McAfee. I recently switched from McAfee to Norton because when I upgraded to XP, I had to reinstall McAfee which they would not let me do without purchasing VirusScan 9.0. I thought that was a lousy way to do business since VS 8.0 (which I had) worked fine with XP, so I got rid of McAfee. So, would it be okay to fix those? Thanks.

IE opened up with about:blank as the homepage

i need you to be a bit more specific here
the default homepage for IE is about blank
unfortunately, there is also a hijacking website by the same name
is your startup page a search engine?
or is it just a blank pg?
if it is a blank page
you can go to the webpage you want as your startup then go —tools->internet options->use current page then press apply then ok
close IE then reopen it
————-

if your IE opens to a seach engine called about:blank … then we have more to do.
Because the infection is not showing, i need you to disable teatimer, reboot/use your computer for a few times and then post a new log
——————–

After that REBOOT scan with hijackthis and
POST a new log in this thread using 'Add Reply'
Oh, sorry about the confusion. I didn't know about the about:blank hijacking website. My personal homepage has always been a blank page. So, when I said it was back to being about:blank, I meant the blank page as it always has been. So, at least in my view, the problem is solved.
