Thanks in advance for your help with this.

I have run both Adware SE Plus and Spybot but we're still getting inundated with pop-up ads. As long as our internet connection is active we get a steady stream of ads.

Here is the latest HijackThis log:

Hello pgbz and welcome to TomCoyote. :wavey:

You may want to print out these instructions or save them to your desktop as a text file with Notepad because we will be restarting into Safe Mode later on in the fix and you might not be able to access the Internet.

Step 1
You have ad-aware's ad-watch running on your computer and that is good.
But prior to doing the fix below with hijackthis it needs to be turned off.
Please do the following.

Open AdAware Se.
Click the Ad-Watch icon on the top of the screen.
Go to Tools and Preferences.
At the bottom of the screen you can see two checkable items called Active and Automatic.
Active: This will turn Ad-Watch On\Off without closing it
Automatic: Suspicious activity will be blocked automatically
Uncheck those boxes.

Remember when we have completed cleaning your machine to turn it back on.

Step 2
Reboot the computer into Safe Mode (tap F8 during bootup, use arrow keys to select Safe Mode, then hit 'enter').

Step 3
Open HijackThis, run a scan, then check the following:

R0 - HKLM\Software\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\Main,Local Page = c:\windows\SYSTEM\blank.htm

O2 - BHO: CControl Object - {3643ABC2-21BF-46B9-B230-F247DB0C6FD6} - C:\Program Files\E2G\IeBHOs.dll
O2 - BHO: CAUN Object - {59F12660-2B92-4554-98F9-87295AD8A0CE} - C:\WINDOWS\system32\AUNBHO.dll

O4 - HKLM\..\Run: [winupdtl] C:\WINDOWS\system32\winupdt.exe
O4 - HKLM\..\Run: [sF6O33X] rtipi16.exe
O4 - HKCU\..\Run: [prutqct] C:\WINDOWS\system32\prutqct.exe

O9 - Extra button: PartyPoker.com - {B7FE5D70-9AA2-40F1-9C6B-12A255F085E1} - c:\program files\partypoker\IEExtension.dll
O9 - Extra 'Tools' menuitem: PartyPoker.com - {B7FE5D70-9AA2-40F1-9C6B-12A255F085E1} - c:\program files\partypoker\IEExtension.dll

Optional items to check with HijackThis for improved performance.
Automatic updates for ViewPoint products such as ViewPoint Media Player (as bundled with AOL, AOL Instant Messenger, Compuserve, etc) Recommended to check here and remove with Add/Remove Programs.
O4 - HKLM\..\Run: [ViewMgr] C:\Program Files\Viewpoint\Viewpoint Manager\ViewMgr.exe

Resource hog that launches common MS Office components to help speed up the launch of Office programs. Some users claim there's no difference with or without it but it isn't required anyway.
O4 - Global Startup: Microsoft Office.lnk = C:\Program Files\Microsoft Office\Office\OSA9.EXE

With all other programs and browsers closed, click fix checked.

Step 4
Go to Add/Remove Programs and remove the following items (if found):

E2Give Browser Add On

Step 5
Please set your computer to show all files.

* Double-click My Computer.
* Click the Tools menu, and then click Folder Options.
* Click the View tab.
* Clear "Hide file extensions for known file types."
* Under the "Hidden files" folder, select "Show hidden files and folders."
* Clear "Hide protected operating system files."
* Click Apply, and then click OK.

Step 6
Please delete the following files/folders:

C:\WINDOWS\system32\winupdt.exe
C:\WINDOWS\system32\prutqct.exe

You'll need to search for these files with Explorer to delete. They may be in C:\WINDOWS\system32\ or C:\WINDOWS\
(Start > Search > All files and folders > More advanced options place a check in the first three boxes)

rtipi16.exe

Step 7
Reboot normally and scan with HijackThis. Post the new log as a reply to this thread.
Please let us know how the computer is behaving.
Alan,

Thanks for your reply. Between my first post and now I also added trend Micro's PCciillin 2005 to the mix. Lot's of blocking going on but something is still infecting the system!!

I followed the instructions and generated an new log file. When I re-booted Ad-Watch blocked 4 or 5 attempts at registry changes from the files I just deleted.

Here's the new log file:

Alan, One other thing. I was unable to remove the E2Give program from Add/Remove in Control Panel. There appeared to be no effect when I clicked on remove. Thanks again, Phil
You may want to print out these instructions or save them to your desktop as a text file with Notepad because we will be restarting into Safe Mode later on in the fix and you might not be able to access the Internet.

It looks like AdWatch did block the fix. :( We will need you to Uninstall AdWatch before continuing with the fix. You can re-install it after the computer is clean.

Step 1
Reboot the computer into Safe Mode (tap F8 during bootup, use arrow keys to select Safe Mode, then hit 'enter').

Step 2
Open HijackThis, run a scan, then check the following:

R0 - HKLM\Software\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\Main,Local Page = c:\windows\SYSTEM\blank.htm

O4 - HKLM\..\Run: [winupdtl] C:\WINDOWS\system32\winupdt.exe
O4 - HKLM\..\Run: [sF6O33X] rtipi16.exe

O4 - HKLM\..\Run: [ViewMgr] C:\Program Files\Viewpoint\Viewpoint Manager\ViewMgr.exe

With all other programs and browsers closed, click fix checked.

Step 3
Please set your computer to show all files.

* Double-click My Computer.
* Click the Tools menu, and then click Folder Options.
* Click the View tab.
* Clear "Hide file extensions for known file types."
* Under the "Hidden files" folder, select "Show hidden files and folders."
* Clear "Hide protected operating system files."
* Click Apply, and then click OK.

Step 4
Please delete the following files/folders:

C:\WINDOWS\system32\winupdt.exe

You'll need to search for these files with Explorer to delete. They may be in C:\WINDOWS\system32\ or C:\WINDOWS\
(Start > Search > All files and folders > More advanced options place a check in the first three boxes)

rtipi16.exe

Step 5
Reboot normally and scan with HijackThis. Post the new log as a reply to this thread.
Please let us know how the computer is behaving.
Alan,

Some confusing results. Here is my Hijack log without AdwareSE Plus and Ad Watch uninstalled (which is the way I currently have the system).

The first time I followed you instructions the HJT log was exactly like this one. I then decided to re-install Adware SE Plus and activate AdWatch. After doing that, I re-ran HJT and all the things which I had previously removed (blank IE page; winupdt.exe line, rtipi16 line; viewpoint line all returned in the log. I then re-booted into safe mode and once again followed your instructions with Hijackthis, but when I went to delete the actual files, they were not there.

So after all that, here's my current HijackThis file without Adware/
AdWatch installed.

Once again, I appreciate all your help with this.

Phil

Since the files are gone it is just the registry entries that need cleaned. I suggest trying this to fix those items that have reappeared. In the Ad-Watch window, check the Active option instead of Automatic. This should prevent if from stopping the fix.
Let us know if this helps.

Your new log is clean.:)

I suggest that you get these programs to help keep the computer clean:

Spyware Blaster - Blocks bad ActiveX items from installing on your computer.
SpywareGuard - Real-time protection from spyware installation attempts
ie-spyad - Puts over 8,000 bad URLs into your restricted sites for Internet Explorer.
Google Toolbar - Blocks many unwanted pop-ups in Internet Explorer.
Firefox - Safer alternative to the Internet Explorer web browser.

AVG AntiVirus - Free antivirus program if you currently are not using one.
ZoneAlarm - Free firewall program if you currently are not using one.

Update these regularly.

You may also want to read "How did I get infected in the first place"

Be sure to keep Windows and your Anti-virus updated.
