Hello,

I need help removing spyware and stopping popups from automatically opening. My computer currently uses Windows XP SP2 with Norton Antivirus software. I've tried configuring the Internet Options - Popups setting to High to disable the popups, but this doesn't seem to work. I suspect I have some sort of spyware(s) installed as well.

The HijackThis log is copied below:

Thank you in advance for your help!

PCNewbie :)
Hello PCNewbie, and welcome to the TomCoyote Forums. I will be helping you get your system cleaned up and protected. I am currently reviewing your HiJackThis log and will post back shortly. Thank you for your patience. Regards, Dave
Hello PCNewbie,

You have a NewdotNet infection, among other things. Let's get you cleaned up. This will likely take a few steps so please be patient.

Backup the registry by going to Start>Run> and type ‘regedit’ without the quotes. Then on the file menu choose ‘backup registry’ in Windows 9x or ‘export’ in XP.

Download the LSPfix.txt and read the readme file.

Download LSPfix.zip or LSPfix.exe

Use this program only if you can not connect to the Internet after removing New(Dot)Net.

Follow these steps to remove NewDotNet:
A. Go to Start -> Control Panel.
B. Uninstall NewDotNet (New.Net) from Add/Remove Programs

If there is no uninstall program listed then do the following:
Go to http://www.newdotnet.com/removal.html ; scroll down to Procedure 4 and follow the removal instructions.

If you can not connect to the Internet after removing New(Dot)Net, please run the LSP-Fix program downloaded earlier, and click on the "Finish" button.
***To start the LSPfix….Close all windows except LSPfix

Launch LSPfix.zip and install to its own folder, then click on LSPfix.exe. Or click on LSPfix.exe and it will launch the program.

Next please download and run Spybot and AdAware SE. Then follow the instructions in the link below to setup and run them Spybot and Adaware Tutorial.
Reboot after running each tool.

Post a new HJT log for review.

Regards,

Dave
Hi IndiGenus,

I've followed your instructions and have installed both Spybot and AdAware. I am getting the following window popup when I logon though:

RunDLL error:

"Error Loading: C:\Program Files\WildTangent\Apps\CDA\cdaEngine0400.dll

The specified module could not be found."

Thank you again for your help!
PCNewbie
Hello PCNewbie,

NewdotNet appears to be cleaned up and Spybot/Adaware have cleaned
up some other items. We still have a bit of manual cleaning to do with
HijackThis. Also note that I have identified 3 items I would consider optional
fixes. WildTangent, Viewpoint, and Weatherbug. They are not necessary
for normal operation of your computer and could slow computer performance,
but you may find that you use them. In that case do not remove.

We need to stop some processes from running so HJT can fix them.
Please open Task Manager with Ctrl-Alt-Del and END TASK on the following files:

C:\windows\system32\rk.exe
C:\Program Files\Gimdfz\Psnqzer.exe
C:\WINDOWS\system32\jgdccr32.exe
C:\Program Files\Viewpoint\Viewpoint Manager\ViewMgr.exe If uninstalling Viewpoint

If you decide to remove any of the optional items go to Add/Remove
Programs and uninstall the following if present.
Click Start > Control Panel > Double Click Add/Remove Programs:

WildTangent
Viewpoint Manger
Weatherbug

Now you can run HiJackThis. Check the boxes next to these items:

O4 - HKLM\..\Run: [OSS] c:\windows\system32\rk.exe -boot
O4 - HKLM\..\Run: [Gyamgf] C:\Program Files\Gimdfz\Psnqzer.exe
O4 - HKCU\..\Run: [ZoqtRkH3i] jgdccr32.exe
O16 - DPF: {56336BCB-3D8A-11D6-A00B-0050DA18DE71} (RdxIE Class) - http://software-dl.real.com/2186575ad8c09b…ip/RdxIE601.cab

The next items are the optional fixes:

O4 - HKLM\..\Run: [WildTangent CDA] RUNDLL32.exe "C:\Program Files\WildTangent\Apps\CDA\cdaEngine0400.dll",cdaEngineMain
O4 - HKLM\..\Run: [ViewMgr] C:\Program Files\Viewpoint\Viewpoint Manager\ViewMgr.exe
O9 - Extra button: WeatherBug - {AF6CABAB-61F9-4f12-A198-B7D41EF1CB52} - C:\Program Files\AWS\WeatherBug\Weather.exe (file missing) (HKCU)

Now close all browser and explorer windows, and tell HijackThis to "Fix checked".

We need to make sure all hidden files are showing so please:
* Click Start.
* Open My Computer.
* Select the Tools menu and click Folder Options.
* Select the View Tab.
* Under the Hidden files and folders heading select Show hidden files and folders.
* Uncheck the Hide protected operating system files (recommended) option.
* Click Yes to confirm.
* Click OK.

Now boot the computer into safe mode:
*Restart the computer.
*As soon as BIOS is loaded begin tapping the F8 key until the Advanced Options menu appears.
*Use the arrow keys to select the Safe mode menu item
*Press Enter.

Using Windows Explorer delete the following files if present:

c:\windows\system32\rk.exe<–file
C:\Program Files\Gimdfz\Psnqzer.exe<–file
C:\WINDOWS\system32\jgdccr32.exe<–file

Remove these folders if you remove the optional items:

C:\Program Files\WildTangent<–folder
C:\Program Files\Viewpoint\Viewpoint Manager<–folder
C:\Program Files\AWS\WeatherBug<–folder

Reboot and post a new HJT log for review.

Regards,

Dave
Hi IndiGenus,

I've followed yor instructions and the HijackThis log is below. One note though: I was not able to go to safe mode with F8 key after reboot (I tried this several times), so I deleted the files/folders listed in normal mode using Windows Explorer.

Thanks again for your help! The popups have disappeared so far since the fixes you suggested.

Hello PCNewbie,

Congratulations, your system is clean. Here are a few tips to prevent malware from infesting your computer in the future.

Reset and Re-enable your System Restore to remove infected files that may have been backed up by Windows. The files in System Restore are protected to prevent any programs changing those files, and malware often hides in these restore points. This is the only way to clean these files: (You will lose all previous restore points which are likely to be infected anyway).* To turn off System Restore:
* On the Desktop, right-click My Computer.
* Click Properties.
* Click the System Restore tab.
* Check Turn off System Restore.
* Click Apply, and then click OK.
* Reboot.

* Now turn System Restore back ON.
* On the Desktop, right-click My Computer.
* Click Properties.
* Click the System Restore tab.
* Un-Check *Turn off System Restore*.
* Click Apply, and then click OK.
In addition to regularly updating and running your antivirus, Adaware, and Spybot S&D, I recommend also adding the following:
  • Install SpywareBlaster - SpywareBlaster will add a large list of programs and sites into your Internet Explorer settings that will protect you from running and downloading known malicious programs. A tutorial on installing & using this product can be found here:
    Using SpywareBlaster to protect your computer from Spyware and Malware
  • Install SpywareGuard - SpywareGuard provides a real-time protection solution against spyware that is a great addition to SpywareBlaster's protection method. You can download SpywareGuard here:
    http://www.javacoolsoftware.com/sgdownload.html
    A tutorial on installing & using this product can be found here: http://www.bleepingcomputer.com/forums/tutorial50.html
  • Use a Firewall - I can not stress how important it is that you use a Firewall on your computer. Without a firewall your computer is succeptible to being hacked and taken over. At a minimum make sure the firewall in Windows is enabled. Simply using a Firewall in its default configuration can lower your risk greatly. For a tutorial on Firewalls and a listing of some available ones see the link below:
    Understanding and Using Firewalls
  • This point cannot be stressed enough! - Update all these programs regularly - Make sure you update all the programs I have listed regularly. Without regular updates you WILL NOT be protected when new malicious programs are released.
I recommend cleaning out your temporary internet files. CCleaner is a
freeware system optimisation tool for PCs. It removes unnecessary junk
from your computer allowing it to run more efficiently and securely.
Please download CCleaner from one of the two websites below:
http://www.majorgeeks.com/download4191.html
http://www.ccleaner.com/

Install CCleaner. Now open and click on the Windows tab.
Check the following items:
Under Internet Explorer:
Temporary Internet Files
History
Recently Typed URLs
Delete Index.dat files
Under System:
Empty Recycle Bin
Temporary Files
Memory Dumps
Chkdsk File Fragments
Old Prefetch Data

Next: click the Options button and then click the Settings tab
Uncheck: Only delete files older than 48 hrs. and click OK

Prior to running click on the Check for updates now… link
Then click the Run Cleaner button. It should only take a few seconds
to complete and exit when it is done.

Here is a link to an article written by Tony Klein, that also gives some great advice on preventing further infection.

This is a great tutorial on Hardening IE.

Regards,

Dave
