I don't know why, but webservicehosts is my "not found" page and i see that it is even in all of the banner ads throughout the various websites that i surf to (e.g. yahoo and msn). i also notice that sometimes it slips in in-between mouse-clicks so that i can see it is in my surfing history (i.e. i can't click back to the previous page because a webservicehosts page is there instead). I'm using the latest versions of AdAware and HiJackThis.

Here's my hijack log:

Hello leejyi, Welcome to TomCoyote forum. If you are still looking for help, please follow these instructions. First I believe you need a folder for your HijackThis.exe. Right click on a blank spot of the desktop and make a NEW then FOLDER. Call it HJT. HJT needs this to store backups for safety and logs. If any logs are on the desktop move them into the folder also. It will look like this then in your log: C:\Documents and Settings\Junho\Desktop\HJT\HijackThis.exe.
We have a nice little collection of malware to remove. Later I will be giving you a link to a tutorial for Ad-aware that will help you configure it to kill more of this stuff for you and suggestions for other free software to enhance your security, but for now:

Scan with HijackThis and place a check in the box in front of each of these line items:

Close all programs but HJT and all browser windows then click on "Fix Checked". Clean Like this: Start, Run type "cleanmgr" without the quotes then ok. Check and remove anything windows locates. Empty the recycle bin and restart the computer. Surf a little to see how it is running. Use the following two links to stay in the thread, then post a new log along with your comments.
I will not need a startup log unless I request one..thanks.When replying to your topic, please use the

OK eejyi, Can you see that many of the items I had posted for you to check and remove are still in your second log. If you did check them and remove them as instructed, then something is stopping them from being removed. This time we will use the Safe Mode to do this. You will want to print the instructions because you will not be able to see this information when you are in the Safe mMde. Here are instructions for starting your computer in the safe mode:

http://service1.symantec.com/SUPPORT/tsgen…src=sec_doc_nam

Once you are in Safe Mode, Open HijackTHis, then click on the SCAN button. Put a check mark in the box in front of each of these lines:

R0 - HKCU\Software\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\Main,Start Page = http://www.youthspecialties.com/more/2004winter/product/
O2 - BHO: (no name) - {D714A94F-123A-45CC-8F03-040BCAF82AD6} - C:\WINDOWS\Downloaded Program Files\SbCIe02a.dll
O8 - Extra context menu item: &Viewpoint Search - res://C:\Program Files\Viewpoint\Viewpoint Toolbar\ViewBar.dll/CXTSEARCH.HTML
O16 - DPF: {56336BCB-3D8A-11D6-A00B-0050DA18DE71} (RdxIE Class) - http://software-dl.real.com/08df302ae98b36…ip/RdxIE601.cab
O16 - DPF: {56336BCB-3D8A-11D6-A00B-0050DA18DE71} (RdxIE Class) - http://software-dl.real.com/08df302ae98b36…ip/RdxIE601.cab
O16 - DPF: {640B39C1-D713-464F-92C3-75BD972B95EE} - http://www.sidestep.com/get/k00719/sb02a.cab

Then click on the "Fix Checked" button. Be careful to check and remove each on, one of these malware lines is causing the problem.

Empty the recycle bin and restart the computer. Post a new log, tell me about any issues you had performing these instructions.

It's weird because when I browse, all of the ad banners in sites like MSN say "The page cannot be found," which leads me to believe that I still have some malware/spyware.

In my first post I asked for your comments, I intended for you to tell me about any issues that occured during the removal process. Like, "I could not remove some of the items you requested", please take your time and be careful. Once you follow my instructions and remove all the bad items the symptoms you are experiencing should go away. Thanks.

Thanks…pskelley

I'm still having trouble. It is causing problems with my Hotmail. Also, when I open some sites, it automatically forwards to adult sites. Not good.

Also, when using Trend Micro's virus scanner, I get the following three virii that I cannot remove.

Hello leejyi, I have not heard from you in almost three weeks. You can't just wonder off and show up when you wish if you want my help. I will give this another go, you most post on a timely basis, and you must do your best to follow directions. If you can't for some reason, you need to let me know.

It is causing problems with my Hotmail

Have you seen this information?
http://news.com.com/Hotmail+outage+peeves+…_3-5587906.html

Norton antivirus protection that was running in prevous logs does not appear in this one? If you need a free antivirus program, let me know.
My scan also shows no active firewall running. If you have a problem here, please inform me, one is going to get infected quickly going online without at least this minimum of protection.

The first thing I want you to do is run thse two free online scans. Have them remove anything located. Let me know the results of each scan along with your next post. If anything is located that can't be removed, I need the exact name and location of that item:

http://www.windowsecurity.com/trojanscan/
http://www.kaspersky.com/scanforvirus.html

Please follow these instruction to remove SideStep from Add/Remove programs if it is there:
SideStep can be removed from its entry in the Control Panel’s Add/Remove Programs feature.

I am going to remove any Downloaded Program Files that I do not recognize. Often these bad items are installed by bad ActiveX downloads. These are ActiveX cab files and they will be returned IF you visit the site again.

Scan with HijackThis, check and remove any of these lines that is there after the above instructions:

Close all programs but HJT and all browser windoes then click on Fix Checked. Clean Like this: Start, Run type "cleanmgr" without the quotes then ok. Check and remove anything windows locates. Empty the recycle bin and restart the computer. You are running an old version of HJT, please update the V1.99.1 like this: "Config"=>"Misc Tools"=>"Check for updates online" Post a new log, along with any information from the scans and any comments you think we should have.

Thanks…pskelley

Hey. The reason you haven't heard from me is that I kept checking my e-mail to see if you responded and I didn't see anything. Sorry. I've been dying to get this problem fixed for weeks myself.

Thanks for that thing about the Hotmail.

My Norton AV trial ran out. Do you know of a good free program? I use Trend Micro's online program. I don't feel like it does any good. Did you see my comment about the JAVABYTEVER virus or whatever?

I ran the Trojan Scan and got the following:
Starting scan at 07:45:18:618…
Scan Memory
Memory not infected
Scan folder: 'C:\', recursive
Unable to scan C:\System Volume Information - Access is denied.
Scan folder: 'D:\', recursive
Finished scan at 08:20:46:638
Total number of files is 100245, number of infected files is 0
Average files per second is 47, average file size is 8872259

I could not run the Virus Scan at KasperSky. It seems the program only allows you to scan one file.

Of the things you asked me to remove, I removed four of them:

I use SideStep. Is it a bad program to have? I was also worried about removing the Research button from the Microsoft one. Or, do you believe that it is spyware not installed with Microsoft?

Some of the other things I didn't remove were HouseCall (for the anti-virus), Webshots (I use frequently to upload pics), Scorch (used for online sheet music), something from the Hewlett Packard website, MSN Messenger, MSN Zone, iTunes Detector, MSN Heartbeat, and Dotphoto.

Are these all things that you believe are contributing to my problem with the adult pop-ups?

It appears that during the recent change of server and update of software, I was not notified when this last log was posted. If you still have malware issues, please post a new log using version 1.99.1. If your issues are resolved, ignore this email and I will close this thread in 48 hours. Thanks…pskelley
That's the same problem I had. Before I post a new log, is it possible for you to respond to some of the issues in my previous post? I would be glad to post a log if that is preferable to you.
Your previous log is clean, if you have MALWARE related questions post them along with a new log and I will do my best to answer them.

Here is some great information from Tony Klein, Texruss, ChrisRLG and Grinler to help you stay clean and safe online:
