Hijack That Current Ad Aware Se Doesn't Remove

Ad Aware has always done a good job of removing this stuff for me in the past, but I started getting an occasional hijack ad about a week ago. Updated Ad Aware and ran it but no luck. Waited a week and got even newer definitions and still no luck. It seems worst when multiple browser windows are open. (I couldn't complete a search for "Browser Hijack" in a second browers window as it just kept spamming ads, but after shutting down all the windows and opening a single one, I managed to find this site that helped me in the past.)

Here's my log file. Any ideas?

Welcome to the forum, you have a little bit of a mess going on.

You need to enable windows to show all files and folders, instructions Here

Download SDFix and save it to your desktop.

Please then reboot your computer in Safe Mode by doing the following :
  • Restart your computer
  • After hearing your computer beep once during startup, but before the Windows icon appears, tap the F8 key continually;
  • Instead of Windows loading as normal, a menu with options should appear;
  • Select the first option, to run Windows in Safe Mode, then press "Enter".
  • Choose your usual account.
  • In Safe Mode, right click the SDFix.zip folder and choose Extract All,
  • Open the extracted folder and double click RunThis.bat to start the script.
  • Type Y to begin the script.
  • It will remove the Trojan Services then make some repairs to the registry and prompt you to press any key to Reboot.
  • Press any Key and it will restart the PC.
  • Your system will take longer that normal to restart as the fixtool will be running and removing files.
  • When the desktop loads the Fixtool will complete the removal and display Finished, then press any key to end the script and load your desktop icons.
  • Finally open the SDFix folder on your desktop and copy and paste the contents of the results file Report.txt back onto the forum with a new HijackThis log

Open HijackThis > Do a System Scan Only, close your browser and all open windows, the only program or window you should have open is HijackThis, check the following entries and click on Fix Checked.

Look for these files and delete them, if they won't let you , you will have to boot to safemode to remove them

C:\WINDOWS\system32\cmcddm.dll
C:\WINDOWS\system32\lsasss.exe
C:\WINDOWS\system32\tmp6.tmp.dll

sutykufo.exe
<– This one you will have to search for.

This may just be the tip of the iceburg, there will be more to do. I need to see the SDFix log and a New HJT log please.
Thanks for your help.

FYI, the stock response refers to an SDFix.zip file which is not available at that link. There's an SDFix.EXE instead. (Just so you can update your stock answer.)

I was able to mostly follow your instructions. However CMCDDM.DLL could not be removed even from Safe Mode. It always says it's in use by another process or user. No love from Safe Mode with Command Prompt either. Also, after startup I get a RUNDDL error that service "opmjhi.dll" can't be started.

Let me see the AVG log and a New HJT log in Normal windows
The HJT Log was created in the "standard" environment, not Safe Mode. 100% sure. After I posted last night, I found a tool called Unlocker which basically is a process kill function like you describe which allowed me to delete CMCDDM.DLL. The tool was actually really straightforward, finding all processes running the dll by clicking on the dll and then disabling them all at once. I'm not familiar with the opmjhi.dll either. I'm assuming Ad-Aware or SDFix deleted it? Anyway, I'm going to use HJT to get rid of the associated key but I thought I'd mention it first. So tonight, I think I can pick up with your instructions starting with the AVG application? Anything before that still need to be done or anything different I should do first?
If HJT was run in normal windows, then congrats, you run a lean machine

Unlocker <– I have a whole tool box full of these type of programs, if one won't do it another will

I would remove this also.
O4 - HKLM\..\Run: [SoundService] rundll32.exe "C:\WINDOWS\opmjhi.dll",setvm

I have found that in the past 3 years doing this that if a file won't Google it is almost 100% of the time bad.

Ken :D
Huge THANKS, Ken. Your help has been invaluable. Once I got rid of cmcddm.dll I stopped seeing the hijack events. So tonight will be the minor cleanup of the items you mention when I get home and checking my general security situation to see how it got in in the first place. These things are really crazy with how effectively they burrow into the system. I feel bad for the typical user who has to try to deal with this stuff without having a background in computing. From an understanding point of view, I'm interested in how the malware DLL gets "locked" by a legit executable like Winlogon.exe or explorer.exe. That's new to me. I thought that was always done by replacing/spoofing the legit file with a malicious dummy file. How/Why (in layman's terms) does my 100% real explorer.exe link to the malware cmcddm.dll file in safe mode?
I am not a programmer but it seems that these guys write these files and hook them to a legit service so they can't be deleted. They even write them to create other files if you delete one of them. Yep, the average home user that has no clue as to whats going on can get whacked pretty bad. They dup you into downloading bogus spyware removers and phony video codecs and once installed than your infected. After we deem your system is clean, I will provide links to free tools that we recommend for your system to help keep you more secure. They help about 95% of the time but a person also has to use good judgment in what they download and the sites they visit.
How did I get infected in the first place ? Read these links and find out how to prevent getting infected again.

Here are some free programs to install, don't leave home without them
  • Spybot Search and Destroy 1.4
Check for Updates/ Immunize and run a Full System Scan on a regular basis.
  • Ad-Aware SE Personal 1.06
Check for Updates and run a Full System Scan on a regular basis.
  • Spyware Blaster It will prevent most spyware from ever being installed.
  • Spyware Guard It offers realtime protection from spyware installation attempts.
  • Win Patrol This program will warn you when any changes are being made to your system and give you the option to deny the change.
  • IE-Spyad
IE-Spyad places over 4000 web sites and domains in the IE Restricted list which will severely impair attempts to infect your system. It basically prevents any downloads (cookies etc) from the sites listed, although you will still be able to connect to the sites.
  • Firefox 2.0 It has more features and is a lot more secure than IE. It is a very easy and painless download and install, it will no way interfere with IE, you can use them both.
  • Zone Alarm Here is a free Firewall from Zone Labs, I wouldn't access the internet without it.
