Please provide instructions on how I can disable this function, as it is being used to hack into one of my ports. I am running Zone Alarm Pro, but it is over-riding my block on that port. If I could disable it, the ALG could not be utilized to do this. It is "listening" through a port which I have blocked on the ZAP. I have the instructions on how to disable this in Win98SE, but not the XP Home (or XP Pro). PLEASE HELP ASAP.
Some might see your request as offtopic, but it really isn't. ALG.exe is a frequently encountered entry in HJT logs.

To answer your question…you can turn it off in XP in Control Panel/Administrative Tools/Services. Right click on Service and left on Properties and in dropdown box you can disable it.

Warning…if you use file and printer sharing or share PC resources on a network (peer or domain) you will need this file. Also if you use the Windows Firewall this service is needed. But with 3rd-party firewall it can be whacked with limitations prior denoted.

Thank you so much Texruss for the very prompt response for my request for assistance, and the added "warnings" about this application disabling which I was unaware of. Hopefully, I will not be forced to disable it as I may have found a method to block the intruder from Port 3001 using this application. You are a real "life saver" and do appreciate your help very, very much. BEST WISHES FOR A VERY HAPPY NEW YEAR!! Hope Santa brought you everything you were wishing for! Warmest regards, Sleeper
