Hello,

My IE came up with a new 'feature': an unwanted searchbar that I didn't put there. I ran AdAware and Spybot, but nothing was detected by either of them.

What should I do? This is my HijackThis log, but I don't know the first thing about these entries, so if someone can help me

Thanks for helping me out.
hello beekmar,

we will remove programs, use HJT, boot to safe mode, delete files. ok

look in add/remove programs panel and uninstall;
WebSpecials

this one iam not sure about, do you use it? many web helpers are suspect:
SurfBuddy
———————————————————————————
Run HJT and check the following items:
Close all open windows except HiJackThis and press 'Fix Checked'

R3 - Default URLSearchHook is missing

O2 - BHO: InstaFinder - {4E7BD74F-2B8D-469E-DCF7-F96DA086B434} - C:\WINDOWS\DOWNLO~1\instafin.dll

O2 - BHO: (no name) - {D2C3E039-0FFF-2E0B-DB4C-05C53B0D40C5} - C:\WINDOWS\system32\lqkzkh.dll

O4 - HKCU\..\Run: [WebSpecials] rundll32 "C:\Program Files\WebSpecials\webspec.dll",run

now boot into SAFe MODE by tapping f8 key at startup, chose safe mode from the options. once in safe mode;

look in C:\Program Files and delete entire folder>>WebSpecials

also in safe mode:
Empty your Temp folders. Go to Start > Run and type:cleanmgr. Windows will scan. When done check these 3 and press *ok* to remove:

Temporary Files
Temporary Internet Files
Recycle Bin

Click Start>Run then type %temp%
Hit OK. Delete all the files you can, some wont delete.

——————————————————————————-
reboot normally pick two of these for a online scan:

post new HJT log…………….shelf life
Hello shelf life, thanks for your advice. I tried to do exactly as you told. I ran the MWTI virus scan, it took over two hours to finish, didn't have time to launch a second one. I found 60 occurrences of virus infected files, I suppose there are some duplicates. This is the virus log :

Is there a way out of this?

Thanks again, shelf life!
hello beekmar, yes there is a way out, its really not that bad of a log File C:\RECYCLER<<restore< files. ——————————————————— lets try this; Run HJT and check the following items: Close all open windows except HiJackThis and press 'Fix Checked' O4 - HKLM\..\Run: [Parallel Tasking] C:\Program Files\Parallel Tasking\ptask.exe O4 - HKLM\..\Run: [WebSpecials] rundll32 "C:\Program Files\WebSpecials\webspec.dll",run O4 - HKCU\..\Run: [WebSpecials] rundll32 "C:\Program Files\WebSpecials\webspec.dll",run ok now boot into safe mode again (tap F8 key at startup, chose safe mode from options) once in safe mode: look in>>C:\Program Files and delete entire folder>>WebSpecials look in >> C:\Program Files and delete entire folder >>Parallel Tasking ———————————————————- reboot normally and: You must be logged in as an Administrator to do this. If you are not logged in as an Administrator, the System Restore tab will not be displayed. Turning off System Restore will clear out all previous restore points. To turn off Windows XP System Restore: NOTE: These instructions assume that you are using the default Windows XP Start Menu and have not changed to the Classic Start menu. To re-enable the default menu, right-click Start, click Properties, click Start menu (not Classic) and then click OK. 1. Turn off System Restore. (>>deletes old possibly infected restore point) On the Desktop, right-click My Computer. Click Properties. Click the System Restore tab. Check Turn off System Restore. Click Apply, and then click OK. 2. Reboot. Turn ON System Restore.(new restore points on a clean system) On the Desktop, right-click My Computer. Click Properties. Click the System Restore tab. UN-Check *Turn off System Restore*. Click Apply, and then click OK, then reboot ——————————————————- ok now rescan computer with your norton app, make sure its uptodate. should be ok now. post new HJT log……………………..

After your instructions, I have run Spybot, AdAware and Norton (all three fully updated). Nothing found.

Then I ran MW Anti Virus, that identified 4 infected files:
C:\Windows\svchost.exe infected by "Trojan.Win32.Startpage.nv" Virus
C:\Documents and settings\…\Application Data\rbsa.exe infected by "not-a-virus:AdWare.purityScan.w" Virus
C:\Windows\Downloaded Program Files\instafin.dll infected by "Trojan.Win32.Delph.gh" Virus
C:\Windows\system32\14yf08fg.exe infected by "TrojanDropper.Win32.Small.gt" Virus

Then I ran a scan by housecall.trendmicro.com, that also reported a Trojan. I think it was troj istbar.r, but I'm afraid I forgot to note it down.

Rsba.exe is not to be found in the directory mentioned above (hidden files ARE displayed). There is one file in C:\Windows\Prefetch\ called RBSA.EXE-1A8891C7.pf. what do I do with that?

Can't find instafin.dll either. The one file with a similar name is InstaFinder_inst.exe, which is living in C:\Windows\system32. Do you know what it is?

I have also downloaded CWshredder because Startpage.nv is said to be a variant of CoolWeb. CWshredder moved svchost.exe tot the dustbin, but I restored it and renamed it for the time being. Should I keep it or throw it out?

I have also renamed 14yf08fg.exe, just in case. Is that an essential system32 file?

Since there wer three trojans listed, I also downloaded and ran SwatIt, which found nothing at all.

I am a bit worried too about two files that keep reappearing in C:\
AVPCallback.log
jswx.log
Are they harmles?

That's about it. Two files found and renamed, two files seem to be non existant. I'm not sure yet if things have been solved. I am looking forward to your reply. Be sure I'll make a donation!

good work. C:\Windows\Prefetch\ called RBSA.EXE-1A8891C7.pf. >>this is windows prefetch folder, everything in here can be deleted. The one file with a similar name is InstaFinder_inst.exe, which is living in C:\Windows\system32. Do you know what it is? >>this is adware and can be deleted from the system32 folder I have also renamed 14yf08fg.exe, just in case. Is that an essential system32 file? >>you can delete this from the system32 folder I am a bit worried too about two files that keep reappearing in C:\ AVPCallback.log jswx.log >>i wouldnt worry about them. legit software can produce log files I have also downloaded CWshredder because Startpage.nv is said to be a variant of CoolWeb. CWshredder moved svchost.exe tot the dustbin, but I restored it and renamed it for the time being. Should I keep it or throw it out? >>i would leave it in the recycle bin, but dont empty bin, if everything functions ok after several days, then empty recycle bin. svchost.exe is a legit windows file if you cant find the files that the online scanners are finding, then i wouldnt worry about them, go with your norton antivirus. these scanners can have false positives i think most of this stuff your pointing out are harmless leftovers. shelf life
Hello shelf life, Hope you had a wonderful X-mas. I have been out for a few days to my family, hence this belated reply. I followed your latest instructions and for several days things seem to be working pretty normal, thank you very much. I don't know what I would have done without your advice. Do you want me to post al last HJT log? If not, consider this topic closed. The donation will be on its way. Gratefully, beekmar

What do you think?

Best regards, beekmar
you can have HJT fix this one;

O23 - Service: Cryptainer service - Unknown - ssoftsrv.exe (file missing)

other than that it looks good.

for reference:

Please follow a few tips to remain malware free:

1) Make sure you keep your Windows OS current by visiting Windows update occasionaly to download and install any critical updates and service packs. With out these you are leaving the backdoor open.
http://v4.windowsupdate.microsoft.com/en/default.asp

Also download, install and keep updated- Antivirus Software (and use only one):
Free for home users:
http://www.avast.com/eng/free_virus_protectio.html
http://free.grisoft.com/freeweb.php/doc/2/ AVG free version v6.0 updates end 12/31/04>>>get new (still free) version 7.0
http://www.free-av.com/

2) Watch what you download, and where you download it from. Many programs come bundled with crapware. Make sure you know what it is you will be downloading and installing. Visit the makers website, learn more about the program, Does the program you want come bundled with other "3rd party" programs? What do the 3rd party programs do? Will they deliver ads? Track your surfing habits?.You may be installing more than you think, Read the EULA agreement, you know that paragraph of stuff you "agree to" before the software installs? Stay away from warez and crack sites. Becarful what you download from file sharing networks. If you are not sure, scan it with your Antivirus app. A small file (in KB) is probably not what you think it is.

3)Adjust your browser settings: Change your(active x) settings in IE. With IE open go to tools, internet options, security tab. Click on the internet globe, then custom level. Set the first option "download signed active x controls" to prompt, the next two to disable. Read more: https://netfiles.uiuc.edu/ehowes/www/btw/ie/ie-opts.htm
http://www.microsoft.com/windows/ie/using/…y/settings.mspx
Many exploits are directed at Internet Explorer, you dont have to use it. Try a different browser: http://www.mozilla.org/products/firefox/

4)Install a firewall. A firewall will control what comes in from the internet and what leaves your computer to the internet. A firewall will also alert you when a application trys to connect to the internet from your computer, this is a good way to catch crapware or trojans, trying to connect out bound from your computer- whats that and why does it need a internet connection? You can deny it access it until more investigation is done. Zone Alarm is a free and easy to use firewall, that will provide in and outbound protection. Microsoft XP firewall only provides inbound protection. SP2 adds in and out bound protection which is better than nothing, but is not as robust as third party firewalls, Be sure to run only >one< firewall. If you use another, be sure to disable XP's built in firewall.A inexpensive NAT hardware router with SPI (firewall)would be even better, along with a software firewall.
Zone Alarm: http://www.zonelabs.com/store/content/home.jsp
Kerio Personal Firewall: http://www.kerio.com/us/kpf_home.html
Outpost Firewall: http://www.agnitum.com/products/outpost/

5)Download, install and update before using:(if these are constantly finding malware, then you need to make some changes.)
Ad-Aware SE Personal edition: http://www.lavasoft.de/
Spybot Search and destroy: http://www.safer-networking.org/en/index.html
Becarful with spyware "removers and scanners"– there are many "rogue/suspect" programs that "claim to remove" spyware.

6)Other programs to consider:
SpywareBlaster: http://www.bleepingcomputer.com/forums/ind…showtutorial=49
IE-SPYAD: https://netfiles.uiuc.edu/ehowes/www/resource.htm#IESPYAD
AntiTrojan (free) software to fill in the gap:
