I just bought a new computer system and warned my kids to stay off daddy's new computer and use the old one. Of course, the little darlings like daddy's new one better and now I've got that My Search Now toolbar from lop.com that I can't get rid of with Spybot or anything else I've tried. Can you help/

Anything you can help with would be greatly appreciated. Thanks!

chef brian
Hi Chef Brian,
You have a Lop.com infection - to remove it follow the directions below.

Click Start Select Control Panel
double click Add/Remove Programs
look for any of the following, and uninstall them:
Window Search
Window Searching
Lop.com
LOP SEARCH
Browser Enhancer
Ultimate Browser Enhancer

IMPORTANT!!!
you may find entries similair to the above but with Weird spacing in the names.

They are Lop.com, uninstall them.

You may be given a code to insert, do so and reboot when done.

If not listed there, go here:

http://lop.com/new_uninstall.exe

download and run this uninstaller. Reboot when done.

Next,
Your copy of HijackThis needs to be in a folder of it's own. When HJT fixes anything, it makes backups of the original files in the folder it is in. Since Temporary folders are emptied now and then (the files are DELETED), it would not be a good idea to have your backups there. Those backups would be VITAL to restoring your system if something went wrong in the FIX process!

1. Please go to you're 'My Documents' folder, right-click and select 'New > Folder' then name the folder 'HJT'.

2. Copy and paste HijackThis.exe to the new folder.

3. Close ALL windows except HJT

4. SCAN with HJT

5. POST the new log in this thread using 'Add Reply'

DO NOT MAKE ANY CHANGES OR CLICK "FIX CHECKED" UNTIL WE CHECK THE LOG, AS SOME OF THE FILES ARE LEGIT AND VITAL TO YOUR COMPUTER'S HEALTH

Thanks,
Sky

Not sure if that lop.com is gone or not, but it's not popping up now. If you can check the files though, as I said, it certainly is appreciated, sky.

Brian
Chef Brian,

Very Good, the lop infection is gone…but we have a little more to clean up.

Also, we still have HJT running under a temp directory.
Lets try this:
Go to Start, My Computer and select Local disk C: (double click)
Now go to File, New, Folder - Name it HJT,
Download a fresh copy of HJT into this folder (or you can move your exsisting file located here:
C:\DOCUME~1\Owner\LOCALS~1\Temp\Temporary Directory 1 for hijackthis.zip\HijackThis.exe). Be sure to delete the old one, if you download a new one.

We are going to making changes with HJT, so it's imperative it be in it's own folder.

Rescan and post a fresh log.

Sky
Hi Sky!

Sorry I didn't get back the other day. Okay, did as you said. Downloaded a new copy of HJT into it's own folder on C and deleted the other instances of it. Here's the new log file:

Brian
Hi Chef Brian,

We still don't have HJT in it's own folder –If you look at this line in your log file,
C:\DOCUME~1\Owner\LOCALS~1\Temp\Temporary Directory 2 for hijackthis.zip\HijackThis.exe
It's still in a temp directory.

We need it to be here: C:\HJT\HijackThis.exe

Go to Start, My Computer and select Local disk C: (double click)
Now go to File, New, Folder - Name it HJT,
Download a fresh copy of HJT into this folder (or you can move your existing file HijackThis.exe)
Be sure to delete the old one, if you download a new one.
Rescan with HJT fro the C:\HJT Folder, and repost your log here.

Thanks,
Sky
Well, Sky, I don't know what's going on here. I have HJT in it's own folder on the C drive as you indicated. But everytime I go to open it up, I get a popup saying that it's in a temporary directory and to move it to it's own folder. Seems everytime I try to open HJT, there's a temporary directory being created. Just deleted everything for the umpteenth time, downloaded HJT to it's folder on C, and this temporary directory was created again: C:\DOCUME~1\Owner\LOCALS~1\Temp\Temporary Directory 1 for hijackthis.zip\HijackThis.exe Any ideas how to get rid of it or what's happening? Brian
Chef Brian,
Sorry you are having trouble. Not to worry, we will get this sorted out. ;)

First, delete all copies of HJT from your hard drive. Make sure you have a folder created on C:\ called HJT
Now go here:
http://209.133.47.12/~merijn/files/HijackThis.exe

This will open a window which is asking would like to 'run or save or cancel' - choose save.
That will open a new window asking where to save the file - navigate to your C:\HJT folder on your hard drive, double click on the folder to open it up. Select ok to save it there.
Close all windows and browsers, open HJT and run it from the C:\HJT\hijackthis.exe file.

Scan and repost –

Sky
Thanks for your patience, Sky. Okay, that seems to have done the trick. At least I don't have that temporary directory anymore! Here's my current log file:

Anything look amiss?

Brian
Hi Chef Brian. Great We have HJT in the correct place!

Before we start, I have a question: Did you edit any on these two lines?
O17 - HKLM\System\CCS\Services\Tcpip\Parameters: Domain =
O17 - HKLM\System\CS1\Services\Tcpip\Parameters: Domain =
If you did nor, Which I suspect you didn't, you can safely delete them. If you did DO NOT DELETE them.

Okay, on to the fix…

First, we need to stop some running processes:
Please open Task Manager with Ctrl-Alt-Del and END Process on the following file, if it exsists:
ALCXMNTR.EXE

Make sure all windows and browsers are closed, except HJT and run it.

Put a check next to these items and select FIX:

R1 - HKCU\Software\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\Main,Search Bar = http://www.lyyvvzyaddqngpgpcpaclacdw.com/U…2b8MjUKnPq.html

O4 - HKLM\..\Run: [AlcxMonitor] ALCXMNTR.EXE

O16 - DPF: {1D4DB7D2-6EC9-47A3-BD87-1E41684E07BB} - http://ak.imgfarm.com/images/nocache/funwe…etup1.0.0.8.cab

Delete these if you did not edit them
O17 - HKLM\System\CCS\Services\Tcpip\Parameters: Domain =
O17 - HKLM\System\CS1\Services\Tcpip\Parameters: Domain =

Now Reboot in Safe Mode:
*Restart the computer.
*as soon as BIOS is loaded begin tapping the F8 key until the Advanced Options menu appears.
*Use the arrow keys to select the Safe mode menu item
*press Enter.

We need to make sure all hidden files are showing so please:
* Click Start.
* Open My Computer.
* Select the Tools menu and click Folder Options.
* Select the View Tab.
* Under the Hidden files and folders heading select Show hidden files and folders.
* Uncheck the Hide protected operating system files (recommended) option.
* Click Yes to confirm.
* Click OK.

Find and delete the following file If it still exsists.
ONLY DELETE WHAT'S IN RED
C:\WINDOWS\ALCXMNTR.EXE

As long as were in safe mode, lets delete the temp files:
Step 1:Delete Temp Files
To clean out your temp files, click on Start and then run, and type %temp% and press the ok button.

This should open up the temp directory that your machine uses. Please delete all files that are found there. If you get an error when deleting a file, skip that file and delete all the others.
Step 2: Delete Temporary Internet Files
Now I want you to open up Internet Explorer, and click on the Tools menu and then Internet Options. At the General tab, which should be the first tab you are currently on, click on the Delete Files button and put a checkmark in Delete offline content. Then press the OK button. This may take quite a while, so do not be alarmed with how long it takes. When it is done, your Temporary Internet Files will now be deleted.

Reboot normally - And post a new HJT file.

Best, Sky
Man, I don't know how you can know all this stuff, Sky, and what it does, but I followed your instructions and here's what I've got:

Those items you asked me to FIX in HJT got deleted when I hit the FIX button, so I hope they weren't important. How do things look?

Thanks again, Sky.

Brian
Welcome back Chef Brian,
Your log looks clean! Are things running ok?

Here are a few suggestions so you can stay clean.

[*]Update your AntiVirus Software - It is imperitive that you update your Antivirus software at least once a week (Even more if you wish). If you do not update your antivirus software then it will not be able to catch any of the new variants that may come out.

[*]Use a Firewall - I can not stress how important it is that you use a Firewall on your computer. Without a firewall your computer is succeptible to being hacked and taken over. I am very serious about this and see it happen almost every day with my clients. Simply using a Firewall in its default configuration can lower your risk greatly.

For a tutorial on Firewalls and a listing of some available ones see the link below:

Understanding and Using Firewalls

[*]Visit Microsoft's Windows Update Site Frequently - It is important that you visit http://www.windowsupdate.com regularly. This will ensure your computer has always the latest security updates available installed on your computer. If there are new updates to install, install them immediately, reboot your computer, and revisit the site until there are no more critical updates.

[*]Install Spybot - Search and Destroy - Install and download Spybot - Search and Destroy with its TeaTimer option. This will provide realtime spyware & hijacker protection on your computer alongside your virus protection. You should also scan your computer with program on a regular basis just as you would an antivirus software.

A tutorial on installing & using this product can be found here:

Using Spybot - Search & Destroy to remove Spyware , Malware, and Hijackers

[*]Install Ad-Aware - Install and download Ad-Aware. ou should also scan your computer with program on a regular basis just as you would an antivirus software in conjunction with Spybot.

A tutorial on installing & using this product can be found here:

Using Ad-aware to remove Spyware, Malware, & Hijackers from Your Computer

[*]Install SpywareBlaster - SpywareBlaster will added a large list of programs and sites into your Internet Explorer settings that will protect you from running and downloading known malicious programs.

A tutorial on installing & using this product can be found here:

Using SpywareBlaster to protect your computer from Spyware and Malware

[*]Update all these programs regularly - Make sure you update all the programs I have listed regularly. Without regular updates you WILL NOT be protected when new malicious programs are released.

Follow this list and your potential for being infected again will reduce dramatically.

Glad I was able to help.
Sky
Thanks so much for your help, Sky. Things are running a lot faster now. Learned a lot from this exercise. Have to read those links you provided - and make sure the kids read them also! Again, thanks for your help. Greatly appreciated. Brian
