My son recently decided to use our "main" computer to search for some mp3s (I try to keep him off of it) and he somehow clicked or downloaded something that has us seeing major popup ads that I've not been able to get rid of.

Running latest versions of Adaware, SB S&D, Avast anti-virus…

Tried another forum with no response so I though I would post here.

Here's my HJT log.

Thanks for any help…

Hello MustangMan. welcome to the TC

Download CWShredder from my signature below. Unzip it on the desktop.
Open CWShredder and with ALL other windows closed, click fix.

Reboot and run these per instructions

Make sure you have the up-to-date versions of Spybot V 1.3 and Ad-aware SE Build 1.05 . All are free and available below.

Download Spybot, install and update. Then download Ad-aware, install, and update.

Spybot:

Install the program and launch it.

Go to Start > Programs >Spybot > Search & Destroy and choose Spybot S&D

Close ALL windows except Spybot S&D
Click the button to "Search for Updates" and download and install the Updates.
Next click the button "Check for Problems"
When Spybot is complete, it will be showing "RED" (RED) entries "BLACK" entries and "GREEN" (GREEN) entries in the window
Put a check mark beside the RED (RED) entries ONLY.
Choose "Fix Selected Problems" and allow Spybot to fix the RED (RED) entries.

Ad-Aware FULL SCAN:

Install the program and launch it.

First in the main window look in the bottom right corner and click on Check for updates now then click Connect and download the latest reference files.

From main window :Click Start then under Select a scan Mode check Perform full system scan.
Next deselect Search for negligible risk entries.
Now to scan just click the Next button.

When the scan is finished mark everything for removal and get rid of it.(Right-click the window and choose select all from the drop down menu and click Next)

Before restart, Empty Recycle Bin.

Restart your computer.

Post a new HijackThis log.
OK LDTate…

Sorry for the late reply. I thought I had the email post notifier on but I guess I didn't. I just thought no one had replied.

I have CWShredder but it didn't seem to be a cool web search problem. I ran it anyways, just to follow your instructions and it came back clean.

Spybot only found one cookie, but Adaware I think did the trick. I've been running it in default mode and I think your settings found more. I was wondering if that gqa and sosa executables were something, I've never heard of them before. :(

Anyway, here's my new log. I've not gone to any site other than TC yet so I'm not 100% sure it's all gone, but I'm sure it's better. Let me know if anything else still throws a flag to you, and thanks for replying! :D

This is what I suggest you do.

Go here and run online scans (all), allow them to delete whatever they find:

TrendMicro HouseCall
eTrust AntiVirus Web Scanner
Panda ActiveScan
Note any thing that can't be fixed

Before restart, Empty Recycle Bin.

Restart your computer.

Reboot and "copy/paste" a new log file into this thread.
Thanks for your continueing help!

I ran the three scans as requested and the results were:

Trend Micro- Clean
eTrust- Clean
Panda- Found and removed two viruses (though it didn't say what they were)

Here's the latest HJT log fresh out of the oven… :P

Close ALL windows and browsers except HijackThis and click "Fix checked"

Restart in Safe Mode:
Restart your computer.

Press F8 after the Power-On Self Test (POST) is done. If the Windows Advanced Options Menu does not appear, try restarting and then pressing F8 several times after the POST screen.
Choose the Safe Mode option from the Windows Advanced Options Menu then press Enter.

Double-click My Computer.
Click the Tools menu, and then click Folder Options.
Click the View tab.
Clear "Hide file extensions for known file types."
Under the "Hidden files" folder, select "Show hidden files and folders."
Clear "Hide protected operating system files."
Click Apply, and then click OK.

Go to Add/Remove Programs and uninstall P2P Networking
Open C:\WINDOWS\system32\l?gonui.exe <–Delete File

Do this also if these Temp Folders are part of your OS.

Also in safe mode navigate to the C:\Windows\Temp folder. Open the Temp folder and go to Edit > Select All then Edit > Delete to delete the entire contents of the Temp folder.

Next navigate to the C:\Documents and Settings\(EVERY USER)\Local Settings\Temp folder. Open the Temp folder and go to Edit > Select All then Edit > Delete to delete the entire contents of the Temp folder.

Finally go to Control Panel > Internet Options. On the General tab under "Temporary Internet Files" Click "Delete Files". Put a check by "Delete Offline Content" and click OK. Click on the Programs tab then click the "Reset Web Settings" button. Click Apply then OK.

Empty the Recycle Bin

Reboot and "copy/paste" a new log file into this thread.
I followed your instructions on the HJT program, but on the p2p networking and l?gonui.exe I couldn't find either. I looked in the main add/remove programs list and the windows files add/remove list. The p2p network client was shown as unchecked and uninstalled, so I didn't have anything to uninstall. As for the exe file, I searched the system32 folder and didn't find anything but the actual logonui.exe, not the one with a "?"….

Regardless…

Here's the latest log…

Thanks again for your help, I have a long drive and get home from work late each night, so this is like a once a night communication we're having, but we're getting it fixed!

Thanks!

I followed your instructions on the HJT program, but on the p2p networking

You might have had Kazza at one time.

Log looks good :D  How is it running any issues?

Note: This will remove all previous Restore Points

Turn off System Restore:

On the Desktop, right-click My Computer.
Click Properties.
Click the System Restore tab.
Check Turn off System Restore.
Click Apply, and then click OK.

Restart your computer, turn it back on.

On the Desktop, right-click My Computer.
Click Properties.
Click the System Restore tab.
Remove the Check Turn off System Restore.
Click Apply, and then click OK.

If you dont have these three programs I would recommend that you get them. Spywareblaster, Spywareguard and IESPY AD. They will add 1000's of sites to your resticted zone and block some hijacks from happening. I also have a FREE FIREWALL and FREE ANTI VIRUS if you need one.

It is critical to have both a firewall and anti virus to protect your system.

Keep your system up to date and run Adaware & Spybot, once a week works, and hopefully you will be ok from here on. Both are available below.

Safe Surfing. :D
I think my son installed Kazzaa one time and I pulled it right off. Yes, the system is running fine now with no pop ups and it is shutting down faster now too… I'll shut off and restart the system restore as soon as I finish a download this evening. I have SP2's firewall and Avast anti-virus. Do you suggest I install Zone Alarm instead? I'll get those three utilities/files tonight too so that I can upgrade the restricted zone on IE… Lastly, now that I've got the latest Ad-Aware SE and Spybot, I feel better too… Thanks again for all your help… :wavey: What is considered the "standard" donation fee? I'd like to throw a little somthing in the pot for the next poor soul that has to go through this… MustangMan

Do you suggest I install Zone Alarm instead

I would think as long as you have either one that will be fine.

What is considered the "standard" donation fee?

I really don't know on that one. My guess is $20.00, but that's up to you. You give what you can. The donations all go to keeping the forum up and running. Any amount is fine.

Glad we were able to help :wavey:
