:weee: Here is the original log file created with Hijack This. I was able to restore proper operation of my browser by deleting a few lines found by CWShredder. Then I was able to go to the SBSoft directory, which was under Windows\Application Data, and delete these files and the directory. However Add/Remove Programs still shows SBSoft on the list and behaves as before. I can highlight and click "Remove," but it does not work. It actually appears to click "Install" immediately after I click "Remove." What a pisser! Anyway, if someone has any advice how to solve this last problem, I would be appreciative.

Reboot afterwards in SAFE MODE. If you don't know how click here
Delete the following file(s) and folder(s) listed

C:\PROGRA~1\COMMON~1\AOL\AOLSPY~1
C:\PROGRAM FILES\WINDOWS SYNCROAD

Some of these files and folders might have the hidden atribute
How to show hidden files and folders in Windows Instructions here

Then Download System Security Suite. Extract it from the zip file into a folder.
http://www.igorshpak.net/software/3ssetup104.zip
Under "items to clear" click all. Then click "clear selected items"

Reboot and Rescan with HJT and post a new log here.
Also please describe how your computer behaves at the moment.
:wavey: I have now repaired as instructed with HijackThis, and cleared all histories with System Security Suite. I have not run the computer much yet, but all commands are followed normally so far. However, the Add/Remove Programs still shows SBSoft and will not remove it. No error messages are received as sometimes occurs when files are deleted before the uninstall. Here is the latest HijackThis log:

I uninstalled AOL Spyware, and that removed the C:\Program~1\Common~1\AOLSPY~1 subdirectory and files. There are no longer any "WindowsSyncroAd" file name types present either. Will there be any problems associated with reinstalling AOL Spyware when I get this last problem resolved? Or should I stick with Spybot? Thanks for your help!
Reboot in SAFE MODE. If you don't know how click here
Delete the following folder(s) listed
C:\PROGRAM FILES\WINDOWS SYNCROAD <

Close all Browser and Program Windows and have HijackThis fix the following.
Do this by checking the box beside each and then clicking on Fix checked.

O4 - HKLM\..\Run: [Windows SyncroAd] C:\PROGRAM FILES\WINDOWS SYNCROAD\SYNCROAD.EXE

:weee: Have run HijackThis again and removed the Syncroad line. The log that I ran after this is below. Still no luck with the SBSoft "program" and the Add/Remove Programs list. Also, the C:\Program Files\Windows SyncroAd directory no longer exists, and I can find no files with "syncro" in the name. SyncroAd.exe definitely is a goner. I will run Spybot later this morning and see if it will detect anything that may be related.

should I stick with Spybot

Yes and Ad-aware

Still no luck with the SBSoft

Don't see it running in HJT log looks clean.

Please read through the ideas and free software listed below that will help to keep your computer clean.
Some of these you may already have installed or may have done already.

Install a firewall.ZoneAlarm FREE

Ensure that an Antivirus is updated weekly and running. AVG antivirus from Grisoft is a very good FREE antivirus program.

Make sure you have the latest critical updates from windows update.

SpywareBlaster will prevent the installation of ActiveX-based spyware, adware, browser hijackers, dialers, and other potentially unwanted pests.

IE-SPYAD puts over 4000 known 'bad' sites into your IE restricted zone so that they cannot install malware on your PC.

Google toolbar has a very good built in popup blocker with a nice search bar. To provide privacy, select disable advanced features when installing.

Check your system for latest virus definitions with an online virus scan every week or two.
TrendMicro HouseCall
eTrust AntiVirus Web Scanner
Panda ActiveScan

Check your system for latest trojan definitions with an Online trojan scan also every week or two.

And also see this link for additional security information.
So how did I get infected in the first place?

Please consider using Firefox

Thanks very much for all your help Little Eagle! Before I had this problem I did not realize that there are so many "crime fighters" combatting the forces of evil programmers. If Kerry could just pull off a win, I would be a very happy person…. Anyway, I contracted this problem by opening an email from an unkown sender, which then appeared reasonably legit, and clicking on a link. Instantly my McAfee software detected and deleted two trojans, but these were able to insert changes to my system regardless. I subscribe to online updates with McAfee and ZoneAlarm, and my Microsoft security is generally up to date. I don't like their intrusive security notifications however, so that was probably my main weakness. Silly me for opening that email, but I delete so many of these things that sometimes I just have to open one to see what happens. Curiosity killed the cat, right? I would consider this one solved, although I have that one last remnant of the attack. I'll get it eventually! Thanks again for the help and advice! This topic is also posted at McAfee forums. A person there helped out too.
