I have run spybot and adaware. They remove it, if I run them in safe mode, for awhile but always returns. I am running xp and don't know how to get rid of this. I ran hijackthis log and its included. Any help would be greatly appreciated. :D

Greetings and welcome to TomCoyote.org!

Click here to download DllCompare. Start the Program with and click the Run Locate.com - be sure the \Windows\System32 directory is in the box and wait until the the blue text says it has 'completed the scan'.

Click the Compare button to start the next process. The results appear in two panes - files in the upper pane have been verified to 'exist', files in the lower pane were 'not able to be accessed'. Very few files should be listed in the lower pane when the Compare scan is complete. Click on each of the listed entries in the lower pane to select them. Right-click on the file and use the option Rescan. This will cause Windows Find to see if the file does exist, and then if so it will be removed from the list to reduce the number of identified files.

Click the Make a Log of what was found button and post the log here in this thread and wait for further instructions.
I did what you said and nothing comes up. I have tried it 3 times and nothing. Any other suggestions would be great. Thanks :) Lesa Strull
That's probably a "good thing". If nothing shows up, that would mean you don't have a hidden file that is "the devil" to remove sometimes.

Since I replied to your post, an easier method has been developed to insure your infection gets removed safely and efficiently.

Please try this:

Download FxAgentB.exe from here and save it to your desktop. After downloading, double-click the FxAgentB file to run it and the program will scan your entire hard drive - this may take a while. When it is done, it will generate a log file called FxAgentB.log - save that information as you will need to paste it here later. Reboot when done.

Next click here to download CWShredder by Merijn Bellekom and run it, hit 'fix' as opposed to 'scan only'. If you already have CWShredder, click 'Check for update' and make sure you are running version 1.59.1. Reboot when done.

Then click here to download Ad-Aware SE and install. Before scanning click on "check for updates now" to make sure you have the latest reference file. Click "Start", select "Perform Full System scan" and "Next" to start the scan. When the scan is finished, the screen will tell you if anything has been found, click "Next". The bad files will be listed, right click the pane and click "Select all objects" - this will put a check mark in the box at the side, click "Next" again and click "OK" at the prompt "# objects will be removed. Continue?".

Reboot when done, rescan with HijackThis and post a new log here, together with the FxAgentB log.

ok,I ran everything you suggested. Here are the results. And if I didn't say so before, thank you soooo much for all the help.

Symantec Backdoor.Agent.B Removal Tool 1.0.1.2

C:\System Volume Information: (not scanned)
C:\WINDOWS\system32\sqlnp.dll: (will be deleted on next reboot)

The Backdoor.Agent.B removal was successful.
The system will delete 1 Backdoor.Agent.B files from your PC on next reboot.

Here is the report:

1 file(s) could not be deleted.
They will be deleted on next reboot.

The total number of the scanned files: 93235
The number of deleted files: 0
The number of viral processes terminated: 0
The number of viral threads terminated: 0
The number of registry entries fixed: 0

The tool initiated a system reboot.
The log looks clean!!!

The removal tool nixed the evil DLL.

I'd say you're "good to go".

I won't close this thread for a few days. If you have trouble, post in here again, please.

I've also included a list of things to help prevent this.

Since this evill DLL was dropped on your machine without you're consent, the two things I believe will help the most would be to run the "Browser test", and change your settings so it passes the tests. And also install IE-Spyad.

GOD bless!!!

M68 :)

Items you may wish to consider to harden your defenses against future infections:

Read "How did I get infected in the first place?" here:

http://boards.cexx.org/viewtopic.php?t=957

Download IE-Spyad here:

https://netfiles.uiuc.edu/ehowes/www/resource.htm

IE-Spyad puts over 4000 known malicious web sites into IE's "restricted zone" to help prevent you from getting infected.

Check your browser settings here:

http://browsercheck.qualys.com/index.php

A series of "tests" (and suggested fixes) to help tweak IE's settings to help prevent infections when surfing the web.

Follow safe Internet practices:

1. Keep your virus definitions up to date, and scan your system regularly.

2. Don't open email, or download attachments from unrecognized email addresses.

3. Be careful when downloading email attachments, EVEN FROM PEOPLE YOU KNOW! Many virii, worms, and trojans infect a persons system then immeadiately spread themselves to the people in the infected persons addressbook via email attachments.

4. Be careful downloading files from the Internet. Scan all downloaded files with a reliable UP-TO-DATE antivirus program. Scan "zip" files BEFORE unzipping, and scan all unzipped files BEFORE USING THEM.

5. Keep your Windows and IE current with all the latest patches and updates.
