I'm running XP, and I can't seem to get rid of this thing. I've tried using aboutbuster and ccleaner, and I also regularly run McAfee, Spybot, and Ad-aware6. Any help is greatly appreciated.

Hello Cotton ,welcome to the forum.

Important: Do this before any fix.

Please put your HijackThis in it's own folder, (I create a new folder in C:\ named HJT).
You can do a Right Click on any open area on the desktop, New> Folder, then rename the folder HJT.

Go to where your HijackThis is and Right Click on HijackThis.exe, select Cut, then open the new folder you just created (HJT) Right Click in the folder and select paste.

The reason we do this is Hijackthis creates backup files just in case you'd need to restore one and we'll be cleaning out the temp files.

After the above:

1)
Click here to download DllCompare. Start the Program with and click the Run Locate.com - be sure the \Windows\System32 directory is in the box and wait until the the blue text says it has 'completed the scan'.

Click the Compare button to start the next process. The results appear in two panes - files in the upper pane have been verified to 'exist', files in the lower pane were 'not able to be accessed'. Very few files should be listed in the lower pane when the Compare scan is complete. Click on each of the listed entries in the lower pane to select them. Right-click on the file and use the option Rescan. This will cause Windows Find to see if the file does exist, and then if so it will be removed from the list to reduce the number of identified files.

Click the Make a Log of what was found button and post the log here in this thread and wait for further instructions.

2)
Download FxAgentB.exe from here and save it to your desktop. After downloading, double-click the FxAgentB file to run it and the program will scan your entire hard drive - this may take a while. When it is done, it will generate a log file called FxAgentB.log - save that information as you will need to paste it here later. Reboot when done.

Click here to download CWShredder and run it, hit 'fix' as opposed to 'scan only'. Reboot when done.

Then click here to download Ad-Aware SE and install. Before scanning click on "check for updates now" to make sure you have the latest reference file. Click "Start", select "Perform Full System scan" and "Next" to start the scan. When the scan is finished, the screen will tell you if anything has been found, click "Next". The bad files will be listed, right click the pane and click "Select all objects" - this will put a check mark in the box at the side, click "Next" again and click "OK" at the prompt "# objects will be removed. Continue?".

Reboot when done, rescan with HijackThis and post a new log here, together with the FxAgentB log and a new DllCompare log.
Thank you for the quick response. The only part of your instructions I had trouble with involved FxAgentB. I downloaded the program and ran it, but after about 2 minutes it gave me the message "Backdoor.Agent.B has not been found on your computer." I downloaded it again, tried running it inside a folder and out, with the same result. Everything else is listed below.

DllCompare Log:

* DLLCompare Log version(1.0.0.125)
Files Found that Windows does not See or cannot Access
*Not everything listed here means you are infected!

Aside from that, CWShredder did not find any CWS files, although Ad-aware SE found 3 (I ran CWShredder first.)
Be sure that all windows are closed. Click on START-> RUN. Copy paste the following as it is and click OK.

regsvr32.exe /U dcml.dll

You should get a message that it has been uninstalled succesfully.

Then be sure that all windows are still closed. Run hijackthis. Hit None of the above, just start the program button.

.Put a check mark on these entries.Hit FIX CHEKED button.

Use Add/Remove Programs and remove:

Restart in Safe Mode:
Restart your computer.

Press F8 after the Power-On Self Test (POST) is done. If the Windows Advanced Options Menu does not appear, try restarting and then pressing F8 several times after the POST screen.
Choose the Safe Mode option from the Windows Advanced Options Menu then press Enter.

Double-click My Computer.
Click the Tools menu, and then click Folder Options.
Click the View tab.
Clear "Hide file extensions for known file types."
Under the "Hidden files" folder, select "Show hidden files and folders."
Clear "Hide protected operating system files."
Click Apply, and then click OK.

Do this also if these Temp Folders are part of your OS.

Also in safe mode navigate to the C:\Windows\Temp folder. Open the Temp folder and go to Edit > Select All then Edit > Delete to delete the entire contents of the Temp folder.

Next navigate to the C:\Documents and Settings\(EVERY USER)\Local Settings\Temp folder. Open the Temp folder and go to Edit > Select All then Edit > Delete to delete the entire contents of the Temp folder.

Finally go to Control Panel > Internet Options. On the General tab under "Temporary Internet Files" Click "Delete Files". Put a check by "Delete Offline Content" and click OK. Click on the Programs tab then click the "Reset Web Settings" button. Click Apply then OK.

Empty the Recycle Bin

Reboot and "copy/paste" a new log file into this thread.
Thanks again for the quick help. I followed your instructions, with one alteration. There was no Local Settings folder for All Users in Documents and settings, so I followed your instructions for each individual user (admin and me;) I hope I didn't screw anything up. My homepage did not revert to about:blank on reboot, but I did get the message that parts of McAfee are missing and I need to reinstall. The new HJT log is: Logfile of HijackThis v1.99.0 Scan saved at 4:02:42 PM, on 1/23/2005 Platform: Windows XP SP2 (WinNT 5.01.2600) MSIE: Internet Explorer v6.00 SP2 (6.00.2900.2180) Running processes: C:\WINDOWS\System32\smss.exe C:\WINDOWS\system32\winlogon.exe C:\WINDOWS\system32\services.exe C:\WINDOWS\system32\lsass.exe C:\WINDOWS\System32\Ati2evxx.exe C:\WINDOWS\system32\svchost.exe C:\WINDOWS\System32\svchost.exe C:\WINDOWS\system32\spoolsv.exe C:\WINDOWS\system32\Ati2evxx.exe C:\WINDOWS\Explorer.EXE C:\PROGRA~1\mcafee.com\vso\mcvsshld.exe C:\Program Files\Creative\SBAudigy2\Surround Mixer\CTSysVol.exe c:\progra~1\mcafee.com\vso\mcvsescn.exe C:\Program Files\Creative\SBAudigy2\DVDAudio\CTDVDDet.EXE C:\WINDOWS\system32\CTHELPER.EXE C:\Program Files\McAfee.com\MPS\mscifapp.exe C:\Program Files\QuickTime\qttask.exe C:\WINDOWS\BCMSMMSG.exe C:\Program Files\Excite\PrvtMsgr\bin\x8IMPipe.exe C:\PROGRA~1\McAfee.com\PERSON~1\MpfTray.exe C:\Program Files\Common Files\Real\Update_OB\realsched.exe C:\WINDOWS\system32\ctfmon.exe C:\PROGRA~1\McAfee.com\PERSON~1\MpfAgent.exe C:\WINDOWS\System32\CTsvcCDA.exe c:\PROGRA~1\mcafee.com\vso\mcvsrte.exe C:\Program Files\Common Files\Microsoft Shared\VS7Debug\mdm.exe C:\PROGRA~1\McAfee.com\PERSON~1\MPFSERVICE.exe C:\WINDOWS\System32\MsPMSPSv.exe c:\PROGRA~1\mcafee.com\vso\mcshield.exe C:\Documents and Settings\Tom Flynn\Desktop\HJT\HijackThis.exe O3 - Toolbar: McAfee VirusScan - {BA52B914-B692-46c4-B683-905236F6F655} - c:\progra~1\mcafee.com\vso\mcvsshl.dll O4 - HKLM\..\Run: [MCAgentExe] c:\PROGRA~1\mcafee.com\agent\mcagent.exe files\mcafee.com\agent\mcagent.exe O4 - HKLM\..\Run: [MCUpdateExe] C:\PROGRA~1\McAfee.com\Agent\mcupdate.exe O4 - HKLM\..\Run: [VirusScan Online] "c:\PROGRA~1\mcafee.com\vso\mcvsshld.exe" O4 - HKLM\..\Run: [VSOCheckTask] "c:\PROGRA~1\mcafee.com\vso\mcmnhdlr.exe" /checktask O4 - HKLM\..\Run: [CTSysVol] C:\Program Files\Creative\SBAudigy2\Surround Mixer\CTSysVol.exe O4 - HKLM\..\Run: [CTDVDDet] C:\Program Files\Creative\SBAudigy2\DVDAudio\CTDVDDet.EXE O4 - HKLM\..\Run: [CTHelper] CTHELPER.EXE O4 - HKLM\..\Run: [AsioReg] REGSVR32.EXE /S CTASIO.DLL O4 - HKLM\..\Run: [MPSExe] C:\Program Files\McAfee.com\MPS\mscifapp.exe /embedding O4 - HKLM\..\Run: [QuickTime Task] "C:\Program Files\QuickTime\qttask.exe" -atboottime O4 - HKLM\..\Run: [BCMSMMSG] BCMSMMSG.exe O4 - HKLM\..\Run: [Excite Private Messenger Pipe] C:\Program Files\Excite\PrvtMsgr\bin\x8IMPipe.exe O4 - HKLM\..\Run: [MPFExe] C:\PROGRA~1\McAfee.com\PERSON~1\MpfTray.exe O4 - HKLM\..\Run: [TkBellExe] "C:\Program Files\Common Files\Real\Update_OB\realsched.exe" -osboot O4 - HKCU\..\Run: [ctfmon.exe] C:\WINDOWS\system32\ctfmon.exe O4 - Startup: 12Ghosts Backup.lnk = C:\Program Files\12Ghosts\12backup.exe O4 - Startup: 12Ghosts Clip.lnk = C:\Program Files\12Ghosts\12clip.exe O4 - Startup: 12Ghosts JumpReg.lnk = C:\Program Files\12Ghosts\12jumpreg.exe O4 - Startup: 12Ghosts JustAWindow.lnk = C:\Program Files\12Ghosts\12window.exe O4 - Startup: 12Ghosts Popup-Killer.lnk = C:\Program Files\12Ghosts\12popup.exe O4 - Startup: 12Ghosts QuickStart.lnk = C:\Program Files\12Ghosts\12quick.exe O4 - Startup: 12Ghosts ShowTime.lnk = C:\Program Files\12Ghosts\12showtime.exe O4 - Startup: 12Ghosts ShutDown.lnk = C:\Program Files\12Ghosts\12shutdown.exe O4 - Startup: 12Ghosts Synchronize.lnk = C:\Program Files\12Ghosts\12sync.exe O4 - Startup: 12Ghosts Timer.lnk = C:\Program Files\12Ghosts\12timer.exe O9 - Extra button: Messenger - {FB5F1910-F110-11d2-BB9E-00C04F795683} - C:\Program Files\Messenger\msmsgs.exe O9 - Extra 'Tools' menuitem: Windows Messenger - {FB5F1910-F110-11d2-BB9E-00C04F795683} - C:\Program Files\Messenger\msmsgs.exe O23 - Service: Ati HotKey Poller - Unknown - C:\WINDOWS\System32\Ati2evxx.exe O23 - Service: Creative Service for CDROM Access - Creative Technology Ltd - C:\WINDOWS\System32\CTsvcCDA.exe O23 - Service: McAfee.com McShield - Unknown - c:\PROGRA~1\mcafee.com\vso\mcshield.exe O23 - Service: McAfee SecurityCenter Update Manager - McAfee, Inc - C:\PROGRA~1\McAfee.com\Agent\mcupdmgr.exe O23 - Service: McAfee.com VirusScan Online Realtime Engine - Networks Associates Technology, Inc - c:\PROGRA~1\mcafee.com\vso\mcvsrte.exe O23 - Service: McAfee Personal Firewall Service - McAfee Corporation - C:\PROGRA~1\McAfee.com\PERSON~1\MPFSERVICE.exe

I followed your instructions, with one alteration. There was no Local Settings folder for All Users in Documents and settings, so I followed your instructions for each individual user (admin and me;) I hope I didn't screw anything up.

You did the right thing.

I did get the message that parts of McAfee are missing and I need to reinstall.

The infection you had can do this.

Good Job

If you dont have these three programs I would recommend that you get them. Spywareblaster, Spywareguard and IESPY AD. They will add 1000's of sites to your resticted zone and block some hijacks from happening. I also have a FREE FIREWALL and FREE ANTI VIRUS if you need one.

It is critical to have both a firewall and anti virus to protect your system.

Keep your system up to date and run Adaware & Spybot, once a week works, and hopefully you will be ok from here on. Both are available below.

Safe Surfing. :D
Thank you once again for all of your help. My computer thanks you, too, as it sits dangerously close to the window and was about 4 hijackings from being tossed through it. It is nice to know that, with all of the people writing these malicious programs, there are also those who help others get rid of them. Thank you.
