Internet explorer closes without any error message about 20 - 30 seconds after loading my home page, if I am quick enough and navigate to another page google for example it stays up. When ie closes the line is not dropped opening ie will re-load the page again for about 20-30 seconds if i navigate to a site that stays up i keep getting a small window in the left corner with an "unable to find server" message, closing this i can continue browsing but it will keep re-appearing.My home page is wandoo.co.uk and another site ie closes on is driversguide.com.

I have downloaded, updated and run adaware se and spybot search and destroy removing a lot of items but spybot s&e gave me an error uniltiger datentype fur. I have also scanned wth nav 2004 latest definitions and no virus found. Looking at the hijack this log there seems to be a few entries with suspect random characters but i would not know where to start. any help would be greatly appreciated

spencehood – Thanks for sending your HijackThis log.

You are running MyWebSearch (or MyBar). This is not technically malware, but it is thought to be bad by many experts and it will bring malware with it. There are safer alternatives available such as the Google toolbar. I recommend that you remove it and have included instructions to do that in this fix.

Since you will not be able to access this page in safe mode during this fix, please print these instructions now, or save them to your desktop, to help keep track of the steps.

1 – To start,, follow this link for instructions to enable 'show all files' for your system.

2 – Next, use Control Panel > Add/Remove Programs to remove any of the following malware that you find:

'My Search Bar'
'MyWay Speed Bar'
'My Web Search Bar'
'Fun Web Products Easy Installer'.

3 – Run HijackThis, and press Scan, and put a check against the following entries, if they still show up. Make sure all browsers and program windows are closed except for HijackThis.

R3 - Default URLSearchHook is missing

These two are remnants of Kazaa, which is not technically malware, but may bring malware to your sytem. They should be fixed now:

O4 - HKLM\..\Run: [AltnetPointsManager] c:\program files\altnet\points manager\points manager.exe -s

O4 - HKLM\..\Run: [P2P Networking] C:\WINDOWS\System32\P2P Networking\P2P Networking.exe /AUTOSTART
[/b[
And, this is an optional item you may choose to fix:

Application Scheduler is installed along with RealOne Player and is running in startup, and is not needed. Once installed, it runs independently of RealOne Player and consumes resources. You can fix this with HJT, but you will also need to set it not to load in RealPlayer itself to keep it from resetting itself: (1) Start RealOne Player (2) Tools -> Preferences (3) Automatic services in the Categories pane (4) Uncheck all options and then OK This is the item to fix in HJT:
O4 - HKLM\..\Run: [TkBellExe] "C:\Program Files\Common Files\Real\Update_OB\realsched.exe" -osboot

Once you have selected all the items for HJT to fix, and remember to make sure all browsers and program windows are closed except for HijackThis, then click fix checked.

4 – Reboot into Safe Mode (How do I boot into "Safe" mode?), then use Windows Explorer to delete the following lists of program files and folders, if they still exist.

c:\windows\ngsw31.dll <– this file (may already be gone)

c:\windows\ngpw34.dll <– this file (may already be gone)

C:\WINDOWS\system32\dmxwk.dll <– this file (may already be gone)

C:\WINDOWS\System32\hkiwygp.dll <– this file (may already be gone)

c:\program files\altnet\ <– this folder

C:\Program Files\MyWay\ <– this folder

C:\WINDOWS\System32\P2P Networking\ <– this folder

Please let me know about any problems with the file/folder deletes.

5 – Next, use "Start > Run" and type in "%temp%" (without the quotes). Delete the entire contents of that "temp" folder (use "Edit > Select All", press "Delete", click "Yes").

Then, Empty your Temporary Internet Cache completely. Close all instances of Outlook and and Internet Explorer, then use "Control Panel > Internet Options > General tab" and click the "Delete File" button. When prompted place a check in: "Delete all offline content", then click OK.

Then, use Windows Explorer to clean out ALL the other temp folders on your system (navigate to the folder, use "Edit > Select All", press "Delete", click "Yes"):

* C:\Documents and Settings\\Local Settings\Temp\
* C:\Documents and Settings\\Local Settings\Temporary Internet Files\
* C:\Documents and Settings\\Local Settings\Temp\
* Empty your "Recycle Bin".

Please let me know about any problems with the temp file deletes.

6 – Now, reboot normally and run either of these two Online virus scans: Panda Active Scan or TrendMicro Housecall and put on Auto Clean.

Now, reboot once again, and run HijackThis to create a new logfile. Repost it here, and if you had any problems with the steps outlined above, please let us know what they were. Your response and the new logfile will determine the next steps for this fix.

Thanks
daveai
Thanks for replying and the info. carried out all reccomended actions, only hitch was machine froze when trying to access temp folder but deleted ok after re-boot. Panda found and healed one infection and during the scan nav detected MHTMLRedir.Exploit and removed it.

IE now seems to stay up ok

NB I de-installed Kazaa before carrying out fixes.

Thanks for the response.

You have one infection that appears to have respawned. We'll try a slightly different approach on it. If this doesn't get it, I have another way to go after it, but not as easy as this one.

Since you will not be able to access this page in safe mode during this fix, please print these instructions now, or save them to your desktop, to help keep track of the steps.

1 – Please follow the instructions in this link below to download and run Spybot & AdAware SE: Spybot & Adaware Tutorial

Please let me know if anything can not be cleaned by these utilities.

2 – Reboot into Safe Mode (How do I boot into "Safe" mode?)

Run HijackThis, and press Scan, and put a check against the following entries, if they still show up. Make sure all browsers and program windows are closed except for HijackThis.

O2 - BHO: SDWin32 Class - {5FA6752A-C4A0-4222-88C2-928AE5AB4966} - C:\WINDOWS\system32\dmxwk.dll

O2 - BHO: SDWin32 Class - {CE9B4071-27DE-4BDF-AF40-BD702A58947E} - C:\WINDOWS\system32\dmxwk.dll

Once you have selected all the items for HJT to fix, and remember to make sure all browsers and program windows are closed except for HijackThis, then click fix checked.

3 – While still in Safe Mode, use Windows Explorer to delete the following lists of program files and folders, if they still exist.

C:\WINDOWS\system32\dmxwk.dll <– this file

Please let me know about any problems with the file/folder deletes.

4 – Next, use "Start > Run" and type in "%temp%" (without the quotes).

* C:\Documents and Settings\\Local Settings\Temp\
* C:\Documents and Settings\\Local Settings\Temporary Internet Files\
* C:\Documents and Settings\\Local Settings\Temp\
* Empty your "Recycle Bin".

Please let me know about any problems with the temp file deletes.

Now, reboot once again, and run HijackThis to create a new logfile. Repost it here.

Thanks
daveai

Your help is appreciated

Regards Spencer
Thanks for the response.

I think part of the problem here is 'Freeserve', which has hijacked your IE settings.

Also, since I see Wanadoo as your start page, I'm assuming that Freeserve is not your ISP. If I am wrong about that, please stop now and reply back to me. If Freeserve is not you ISP, then proceed.

1 – First thing to do is …

Download: http://mvps.org/winhelp2002/iereset.inf

Copy "iereset.inf" to your Windows\Inf folder
If prompted to "overwrite" = Yes

Note: this is the "Default" Microsoft version of the file that Freeserve hijacked.

2 – Run HijackThis, and press Scan, and put a check against the following entries, if they still show up. Make sure all browsers and program windows are closed except for HijackThis.

R1 - HKCU\Software\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\Main,Search Bar = http://www.btopenworld.com/searchpane

R1 - HKLM\Software\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\Main,Default_Page_URL = http://www.freeserve.com/

O2 - BHO: SDWin32 Class - {46FF8B51-2652-4CF0-89EA-BF0361FB6D85} - C:\WINDOWS\system32\dmxwk.dll

O2 - BHO: (no name) - {} - (no file)

O4 - HKLM\..\Run: [TIxDSL] C:\PROGRA~1\FREESE~1\BIN\WIN2K\tidslmon.exe

O14 - IERESET.INF: START_PAGE_URL=http://www.freeserve.com/

Once you have selected all the items for HJT to fix, and remember to make sure all browsers and program windows are closed except for HijackThis, then click fix checked.

3 – Reboot into Safe Mode (How do I boot into "Safe" mode?)

4 – Use 'Start > Run' and type in "%temp%" (no quotes) [required step]
Completely delete the entire contents of that "temp" folder. ('Edit > Select All' then 'Delete' key)

Note: If you cannot delete them all at once because you have too many, or one of the files won't delete for some reason, then click and hold ctrl and highlight a batch of them at a time. Once highlighted, R-click over the highlight and select delete. Rinse, lather, repeat until folder is empty, or until we can isolate the problem files.

Open Windows Explorer to your Windows\Temp folder [required step]
Completely delete the entire contents of that "temp" folder.

See the note above.

Open Windows Explorer locate and delete the following:

C:\WINDOWS\system32\dmxwk.dll <– this file

C:\Program Files\FREESE~1\ <– this folder (probably called 'Freeserve' but the first 6 letters are FREESE)

5 – While still in Safe Mode, run Ad-Aware SE and fix everything it finds.

6 – After the above, reboot, (with nothing else open)
Use 'Control Panel > Internet Options > Programs '
Click "Reset web settings", click Apply\Ok

Then rescan with HijackThis and post a fresh log …

Thanks
daveai
