Hit by a trojan of late and having done my best with Norton and Spybot to clear the adware/spyware that flew in like the fates that flew from pandoras box I have failed to clear that nasty, dirty little STARTIUM SEARCH BOX. (and doubtless many other bugs too) :rant2:

Please give me direction in my deleting.

My log reads like this.

Thanks for any help.

Greetings and welcome to TomCoyote.org!

You've got several pieces of malware active.

Let's start with some online virus cleaning tools, and go from there.

Please try these free online virus scans of your system:

Trend-Micro Housecall

Panda Activescan

Etrust Security Advisor

Choose "fix" or "clean".

Let them remove any infections found. Reboot after each scan.

When finished, post a new log file in this thread. :)
Thanks for the advice.

After running those three scans, during which around ten files were fixed, my log now looks like this:-

Again, thanks for any help on this.

Max
Excellent work!!!!

You knocked a big chunk off the malware.

Still some work left to do…

I'll tell you right now that the "about:blank" infection may take a "special process" to remove. But we'll save that for when all the other malware has been eliminated.

CLOSE ALL WINDOWS (even this one) AND PROGRAMS!!!!

Run Hijack This!
Click "Scan".
Then "check" the box to the left of these item(s):

R1 - HKCU\Software\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\Main,Search Bar = file://C:\WINDOWS\System32/left.html

R1 - HKLM\Software\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\Main,Search Bar = about:blank

R1 - HKCU\Software\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\Search,SearchAssistant = about:blank

R0 - HKLM\Software\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\Search,SearchAssistant = about:blank

Then click "Fix checked".

Reboot in "safe" mode.

Find and delete:

c:\documents and settings\max davies\local settings\temp\spd.exe <— file

c:\program files\autoupdate <— FOLDER

c:\windows\system32\d3d869d4.dll <— file
(should already be gone. just be sure)

c:\windows\system32\kcc.dll <— file

c:\windows\system32\mplbaln.exe <— file

c:\windows\system32\stlb2.dll <— file
(should already be gone. just be sure)

c:\windows\system32\winload.exe <— file

c:\windows\web\related.htm <— file

Use windows explorer to find and delete these:

e6f1873b.dll <— file

moucd.exe <— file

soundcontrl.exe <— file

sres32.exe <— file

Some malware files may be "hidden".
Be sure to show hidden files when looking for these file(s) and/or folder(s).

Reboot in normal mode and "copy/paste" a new log file into this thread. :)
I couldn't find or therefore delete the following:

c:\program files\autoupdate (folder)
c:\windows\system32\kcc.dll <— file
c:\windows\system32\winload.exe <— file

or

moucd.exe <— file
soundcontrl.exe <— file
sres32.exe <— file

There is a file c:\windows\system32\d3d8.dll
But no c:\windows\system32\d3d869d4.dll

and my log now looks like this:

Feels good to delete those nasties.

What else?

Feels good to delete those nasties.

Amen!

There is a file c:\windows\system32\d3d8.dll

GOOD FILE!!! Please leave.

Either we missed one, or it returned.

CLOSE ALL WINDOWS (even this one) AND PROGRAMS!!!!

Run Hijack This!
Click "Scan".
Then "check" the box to the left of these item(s):

O4 - HKLM\..\Run: [98D0CE0C16B1] rundll32.exe D0CE0C16B1,D0CE0C16B1

Then click "Fix checked", and reboot.

With most of the malware defeated, we can check for a hidden file that (if you have it) will make the "about:blank" return after a few reboots.

Download this zip:

Pv.zip

Please unzip it to the desktop. It will not work if you run it from inside the zip.

After unzipped go to the desktop. Open the pv folder. Double click on the runme.bat

A dos window will open. Please select option 1 for explorer dll's by typing 1 and then pressing enter.

Notepad will open with a log in it. Please copy and paste the log into this post.

Also post a new Hijack This! log file. :)
Great, so here is the pv log:

Items you may wish to consider to harden your defenses against future infections:

Read "How did I get infected in the first place?" here:

http://boards.cexx.org/viewtopic.php?t=957

Download IE-Spyad here:

https://netfiles.uiuc.edu/ehowes/www/resource.htm

IE-Spyad puts over 4000 known malicious web sites into IE's "restricted zone" to help prevent you from getting infected.

Check your browser settings here:

A series of "tests" (and suggested fixes) to help tweak IE's settings to help prevent infections when surfing the web.

Follow safe Internet practices:

1. Keep your virus definitions up to date, and scan your system regularly.

2. Don't open email, or download attachments from unrecognized email addresses.

3. Be careful when downloading email attachments, EVEN FROM PEOPLE YOU KNOW! Many virii, worms, and trojans infect a persons system then immeadiately spread themselves to the people in the infected persons addressbook via email attachments.

4. Be careful downloading files from the Internet. Scan all downloaded files with a reliable UP-TO-DATE antivirus program. Scan "zip" files BEFORE unzipping, and scan all unzipped files BEFORE USING THEM.

5. Keep your Windows and IE current with all the latest patches and updates.
(Personally I'm NOT recommending SP2 for XP at this time)
