I was reading an article on this site that warns against downloading untrustworthy freeware, as spyware could be embedded. It's very possible that's what happened to me, but I think I'm fixed now. What about mpeg files? Can those contain spyware or viruses?

yes mpeg files can have virus or trojans, if you download mpegs or avi and are not sure of the source scan them with your resident antivirus software.
