Greetings all, I am being harassed by the Web Search tool bar. Each night I destroy it by Spybot and Adware 6, and each morning it resurrects itself about 5 minutes after I log in. I open p-mail (no mis-type my boss loves Pegasus) immediately after start-up and review my new mail. The Web search browser pops up while I’m reviewing mail so I don’t know if it’s activated by my mail server or just timed for the same time each morning. It’s not a huge problem because I still control my home page, can use my internet options, and my computer is not slow or anything, BUT it has become my quest in life to destroy it. I’ve done all that I can think of including running CWShredder 1.59.1 (although I don’t know if I did it correctly since I ran it directly from the zip). I guess you can tell I don’t know much about computers so I would really like some help before I crash my entire system just to kill a bug. I’m 2 seconds away from opening my register and deleting things at random - LOL :) Thanks,

Download then unzip and run CWShredder to clean up clicking "FIX" to have it remove all it finds.

We have found that some of the CWS infections can be removed better from safe mode, rather than normal mode.
To get to safe mode use the F8 key while booting the machine. Detailed instructions from here :-

Then Please go to add and remove programs and remove,
C:\PROGRA~1\COMMON~1\WinTools\WToolsB.dll
C:\PROGRA~1\Toolbar\toolbar.dll/sa

Reboot.
Download System Security Suite. Extract it from the zip file into a folder.

Under "items to clear" click all. Then click "clear selected items"

reboot again.

Then post another log.

Hi LE,

Thanks so much for the clear instructions! I couldn't find the WinTools or toolbar.dll in ADD/REMOVE programs so I found them by going to c:\…..and deleting them. Hope that worked.

Some of these files and folders might have the hidden atribute

Reboot

Then Download System Security Suite. Extract it from the zip file into a folder.

Under "items to clear" click all. Then click "clear selected items"

Run CWShreader again.

Download the latest version of Ad-Aware hereif you have not done so:

After installing Ad-Aware, and before running the program.
Please be sure to update the reference file following the instructions here:

Reconfigure Ad-Aware for Full Scan:

Launch the program, and click on the Gear at the top of the start screen.

Click the "Scanning" button.
Under Drives, Folders and Files, select "Scan within Archives".
Click "Click here to select Drives + folders" and select your installed hard drives.

Under Memory & Registry, select all options.
Click the "Advanced" button.
Under "Log-file detail level", select all options.
Click the "Tweaks" button.

Under "Scanning Engine", select the following:
"Unload recognized processes during scanning."
Under "Cleaning Engine", select the following:
"Let Windows remove files in use after reboot."
Click on 'Proceed' to save these Preferences.

Run the Ad-Aware scan and allow it to remove everything it finds and then REBOOT to allow it to finish.


Rescan with HJT and post a new log here.
Also please describe how your computer behaves at the moment.

Hi again, Whew - it's been a long day. Here's my progress: -fixed files in Hijack. -couldn't find c:\…opnste.exe (even after full system search including hidden files). -couldn't find sysupd.exe. search found similar named files in c:\doc & settings\all users\spybot\recovery\ tscash 1, 2, and3. I deleted them since it's just spybot - rebooted and home page url bar said @about:blank - I don't think this is a good thing. -ran system security suite - clicked all - clear selected items (it processed very quickly) -ran CWShreader - All items not present or not infected (it said this the first time I ran it even before asking you for help) -reconfigured AD-aware and ran- couldn't clean wsup.exe, wtoolsb.dll, wtoolssc.cfg, wtoolssp.cfs, wtoolss.exe -rebooted and adware automatically started up again. it stopped itself and closed when I wasn't looking so I assume it finished. -Computer seems ok although it defaulted to MSN as my homepage. I'll change it back. By the way - I think my web search problems started after installing my google toolbar @ 2weeks ago - any thoughts? - By the way - Can I safetly go into my start-up menu and stop the blasted messenger from opening automatically without hurting anything. Thank you for all you've done so far. I'm exhausted so my hat's off to you guys or gals who do this all day. Sorry about the slow response time,
I have be having trouble with my computer and some of the programs
that I use to respond to logs. This needed to be corrected it was giving
false positives as to the CWS domains.

Please start Hijack This click config…>Backups and restore

Greetings Little Eagle, I just wanted to come back and thank you for helping me. Close all Browser and Program Windows and have HijackThis fix the following by checking the box beside each and then clicking on Fix checked.
