As a comupter user, I am not knowledgabel about all the file names and extensions. I have run, do run Ad-Aware, SpyBot, Spyware blaster, A2, and now CyberScrub Privacy Suite ES Pro trial version. I have let it run each night, and then defragmented my disk, and still have fragmented files. Computer seems slower. Oh, I also run SpywareGuard (don't really know what THAT does, plus MRU Blaster. I empty my Prefetch folder, Temp files that are not in use. So I think I am doing my best to keep a clean computer, at least it seems so. Please read my post and let me know if I should post my just run Hijackthis log saved in Notepad about 5 minutes ago. Thanks very much, Bill U. Seattle, WA

Above is my scan. I got 3 error messages before the log ran. Odd.
Hello, and welcome to the forums. :wavey:

My name is maynard and I will be helping you with your troubles.

I am looking over your log now and will reply as soon as I am finished.

Thank you for your patience.

We need to disable your Microsoft AntiSpyware Real-time Protection as it may interfere with the fixes that we need to make.

Open Microsoft AntiSpyware.
Click on Tools, Settings.
In the left pane, click on Real-time Protection.
Under Startup Options uncheck Enable the Microsoft AntiSpyware Security Agents on startup (recommended).
Under Real-time spyware threat protection uncheck Enable real-time spyware threat protection (recommended).
After you uncheck these, click on the Save button and close Microsoft AntiSpyware.
Right click on the Microsoft AntiSpyware icon on the taskbar and select Shutdown Microsoft AntiSpyware.

Disable SpywareGuard:

Right click the running icon of Spywareguard, it will open the program.
Then go to Menu, file, exit.
Then confirm the program is closed.

After all of the fixes are complete it is very important that you enable Real-time Protection again.

Please got to your Control Panel and use Add or Remove Programs to remove the following Software (if Present):
  • Premeter
Now, let's do some work on your log.

First we need to make all files and folders VISIBLE:

In the Tools menu of any folder, select Folder options.
  • click the view tab.
  • choose to "show hidden files and folders,"
  • uncheck the "hide protected operating system files" and the "hide extensions for know file types" boxes.
  • Close the window with ok
  • All hidden files will now be visible
Be sure to undo these changes when we are done.

run HijackThis.

*Click Do a system scan only .
*Place a check in the box before each of these Items.

O4 - HKLM\..\Run: [NetMeter] C:\PROGRA~1\NETRAT~1\NetMeter\NetMeter.exe

Please read the information I've provided about some optional entries. If you decide to get rid of them, check them with the rest.

O15 - Trusted Zone: http://international.match.com
This is a site in Internet Explorers trusted zone. This site will be able to run any script on your computer without asking in advance. This is not a good idea, and is usually unnecessary.

O4 - HKLM\..\Run: [QuickTime Task] "C:\Program Files\QuickTime\qttask.exe" -atboottime
Quicktime running at startup is not needed and if you stop it you will free up some resources on your computer.
Do this by using the options menu in the quicktime software.

O4 - Global Startup: Microsoft Office.lnk = C:\Program Files\Microsoft Office\Office10\OSA.EXE
This preloads parts of office into memory. It supposedly makes launching MS Office programs faster.
Checking this item in HijackThis will make startup faster and most users (including myself) don't notice any slow downs after removing it.

*Close all open programs(including browser windows) and fix the Items by clicking the Fix checked button.

Now we need to make sure these files are gone.

Reboot your system into Safe Mode.

How to use the F8 method to Start Your Computer in Safe Mode
*Restart the computer.
*as soon as BIOS is loaded begin tapping the F8 key until the Advanced Options menu appears.
*Use the arrow keys to select the Safe mode menu item
*press Enter.

Using Windows Explorer, locate the following files/folders, and delete them (if they are present):

FILES:

C:\WINDOWS\SYSTEM32\nmtracer.dll

FOLDERS(with all their content):

C:\Program Files\netratings\

Clean out temporary files:
  • ClickStart->Run
  • Type cleanmgr and press enter.
  • Let it scan your system for files to remove.
  • Make sure Temporary Files, Temporary Internet Files, and Recycle Bin are the only things checked.
  • Click "OK" to remove them.
  • Click "Yes" to confirm the deletion.
Exit Explorer and reboot back into normal mode.

Run HijackThis and post a new log.

This is the log I just ran. I am now going to re-enable all my spyware programs, and undo the items per your instructions until I hear back from you. Thanks so much, Maynard!
Good Job

Your log looks good. :D  How is it running? Any issues?

If you don't have these three programs I would recommend that you get them. Spywareblaster, Spywareguard and IESPY AD. They will add 1000's of sites to your restricted zone and block some hijacks from happening. I also have a FREE FIREWALL and FREE ANTI VIRUS if you need one.

It is critical to have both a firewall and anti virus to protect your system.

Keep your system up to date and run Adaware & Spybot, once a week works, and hopefully you will be ok from here on.

Maynard, Thank you very much for your kind assistance in getting my compute to perform in a more refinded manner, using less CPU. One question though. This mornig, I inadvertadly Uninstalled my NetRatings software when on a reboot the icon did not appear. I went to the directory to find it, and clicked on what I thought was a settings folder. WRONG! It uninstalled the program, took me to the website and asked why I was quiting after being a memeber for so long. I quoted it was in error, did a run, search, deleted all files associated with NetRatings, or Nielsen, then went to the website and reinstalled the program. the program still shows in my programs list within Add/Remove programs. My question is, it appeared you had me remove all files & folders for this program, which monitors my internet usage. I don't mnd this, as I am aware of it, and feel it is like being a Nielsen TV family. This was done before I posted my second log, and it does ot show up ther, as far as Ican see, but is in my programs file. Did you just disable certain funtions of the program that will not adversly affect the operation of NetRatings? Otherwise I am at about 180MB of CPU useage when all programs are loaded, which is down from the 205 or better I was at. Thanks so much. I will periodically check in. IE-SPYAD seemed to open, but gaveno indication tht is had. I used the .exe format. In your debt, Blondsin Thanks again for yout time, attention and direction in going through this process. I will now clean out my temp folder, prefetch, rund a disk cleanup, defragmeetn 1 or 2 times, and be on my merry way. I tried to downloaad teh
Maynard,

Thanks so much for the input. I thought I was using a good program, but I guess not. I went to remove it in add/remove programs, as it still appeared there, but when I hit delete, it said it may have been deleted already, and did I want to delete the program name from the list. I said yes, then did a file seach on NetMeter, and Nielsen, and deleted all items that came up.

I am reposting a new log just to be certain. I don't see it in there, but you obviously have a better eye for what should, and should not be there.

Thanks again, and just let me know if it is still clean.

Cheers!

Hi Blondsin,

It looks like its gone to me

I do see match.com back in your tusted sites zone though.

If you truley trust this site then it's O.K. for it to be there if you want to get rid of it,

run HijackThis.

*Click Do a system scan only .
*Place a check in the box before each of these Items.

O15 - Trusted Zone: *.match.com

*Close all open programs (including browser windows) and fix the Items by clicking the Fix checked button..

Reboot your system normally to complete the fix..

Other than that I see no problems with your log

Please follow the recommendations I posted previously to help you stay trouble free.

Cheers,

m
