Hi there,,,,,, such a computer novice here.....trying to see why my computer is slow, why I have more junk emails than a few mths ago and why sometimes when I go to type in my google search box another unkn search toolbar pops open at bottom of screen and starts taking my letters that I was trying to type into google. Not only do I have adaware and search n destroy, I also have the windows defender, steganos antispyware, spyblaster and ccleaner (all freebies). Hmmm, if not infected with stuff, could this be why my computer is running slow??? If you can suggest which of these or any others that I can buy the upgraded version of, I'd be more than happy to do that and get rid of all the unecessary ones. Thanks so much for any help. Here is my hijack this log.....

hi janak, nothing really stands out in the log as far as malware goes. you have: adaware, search n destroy, windows defender, steganos antispyware-- all pretty much do the same thing, i would say that yes 4 is over kill. (the other 2 do different things). lets try this first; check for updates to those 4, then boot into safe mode to run them one at a time. to reach safe mode you would tap the f8 key during a computer restart. chose the first option: safe mode run what you have, then reboot computer normally. rescan and post a startup list for me: click on the hjt icon, click on "open misc tools section" then check the two little boxes to the right of "generate startup list log" then click on "generate startup list log" it will generate a txt file, save it some where and then post that startup log in your next reply. shelf life

Hi Shelf Life,
Thankyou for responding. I did as you asked and after checking for updates, I ran adaware, spybot and steganos in safe mode. I had already uninstalled windows defender a few days ago. I knew I was on overkill and figured that it might help speed my computer up. Anyways, all 3 scans come back "ok". Adaware picked up the normal mru's, the other 2 nothing.
Boy, are all start up reports this lengthy??? It took about 5 secs to generate and here it is..... yikes, I wouldnt even wanna try and figure this thing out. Thanks again!!!!

Hi Shelf Life, Well its a little better I think now that I got rid of Windows Defender. But I still sometimes get that unknown search toolbar pop up at the bottom of my regular google search screen. I go to type in something in google and this other pops up and auto bypasses the google search bar. What could that be??? Also, since this rig doesnt have as much memory(512) or hd space(40), I ordered a new one.....below is what I ordered. I ordered a program with it that somehow auto transferring everything off this machine into the new on, my question is from what you see,,,,, is it ok for me to transfer everything to new machine??? I dont want to be transferring bad junk to it. Thanks again for your help and advice. janak Dell Dimension E510 Series Pentium® D Processor 930 with Dual Core Technology (3.0GHz, 800FSB) Memory 2GB Dual Channel DDR2 SDRAM at 533MHz (2x1GB) Hard Drive DataSafe 160GB (Includes main hard drive plus a hidden reserve hard drive) ******* This one outta be faster???? Oh, almost forgot,,,,,, what does this part of the report mean???? Is it bad to have "hidden" ones? Checking for superhidden extensions: .lnk: HIDDEN! (arrow overlay: yes) .pif: HIDDEN! (arrow overlay: yes) .exe: not hidden .com: not hidden .bat: not hidden .hta: not hidden .scr: not hidden .shs: HIDDEN! .shb: HIDDEN! .vbs: not hidden .vbe: not hidden .wsh: not hidden .scf: HIDDEN! hi janak

two problems, a unknown toolbar(does it say anything, any clues to a name or something?) and a slow computer. as a starting point, we can do this:

commercially purchased computers these days ship with more and more bloatware on them so:
look in add/remove programs panel, go thru the list and uninstall anything you dont use. also look for any toolbar that may be there.
you see a bunch of icons by the clock, if you click and bring up the software, you may find options/preferences for it not to start with windows.

can also try using msconfig to disable startup items, if you are comfrotable doing it.really all thats needed is afew window components and your antivirus, if not sure leave it checked.
see this link:
http://netsquirrel.com/msconfig/
--------------------------------------------------
if you dont see any toolbar listed in the add/remove programs panel i suggest another download, ewido anti-malware (free) and atf cleaner (free). ewido is a excellent malware remover, atfcleaner will clean out temp files etc
-------------------------------------------------
download, install, update, then run ewido and save the log file it generates and post that in next reply:

1. Download Ewido and install
Ewido anti malware. It is a free trial version of the program:

http://www.ewido.net/en/download/

2. Install ewido anti malware
3. Launch ewido, there should be an icon on your desktop double-click it.
4. The program will now go to the main screen

You will need to update ewido to the latest definition files.

1. On the left hand side of the main screen click update
2. Then click on Start Update

The update will start and a progress bar will show the updates being installed.

Click on scanner
Click Complete System Scan and the scan will begin.
During the scan it will prompt you to clean files, click OK
When it asks if you want to clean the first file, put a check in the lower left corner of the box that says "Perform action on all infections" then choose clean and click OK.
When the scan is finished, click the Save report button at the bottom of the screen.
Save the report to your desktop
---------------------------------------------------
atf cleaner here:
download, install and run
http://www.atribune....ntent/view/19/2
---------------------------------------------------
no its not bad to have hidden files

is it ok for me to transfer everything to new machine

hold off on transferring anything just yet, lets make sure all looks good first.

rig doesnt have as much memory(512) or hd space(40)

512mb ram is plenty, you could add a second larger hd

Hi shelf life, First.....I had 2 icons by clock that I didnt need..... my logitech wireless mouse and my sansdisk card reader. I just right clicked on them and closed them. I rarely turn off this machine.... but when I do I'll remember now to exit out of them. The others down there are , mcaffee, steganos (soon to be removed), sypbot, printer and now ewido. As for the add/remove programs........ the only thing that I saw that I had no clue what it was or when/how it got there is...... Security Task Manager 1.6f ..... when I clicked on properties.... its by Neuber.com and last used on 12/26/05 ????? When I tried to click on the link to go to the webiste, it just pulled up the Yahoo Search (which I never use). So I manually typed in the website and nothing looks familiar to me, lol. Now for the ewido scan report..... it found 6 tracking cookies all under my son's documents. When he was living here he set up his own acct on this computer and I havent given that any thought.... but all of these spyware, cleaner type programs that I have installed, its been under my acct. And I have never logged out of mine and gone to his to run them. Should I????? Probably also outta go to his add/remove programs and see whats there???? Here is the ewido scan report...... --------------------------------------------------------- ewido anti-malware - Scan report --------------------------------------------------------- + Created on: 10:53:03 AM, 6/11/2006 + Report-Checksum: 4AD91FE0 + Scan result: :mozilla.11:C:\Documents and Settings\Kevin\Application Data\Mozilla\Firefox\Profiles\9j4lwp98.default\cookies.txt -> TrackingCookie.Atdmt : Cleaned with backup :mozilla.12:C:\Documents and Settings\Kevin\Application Data\Mozilla\Firefox\Profiles\9j4lwp98.default\cookies.txt -> TrackingCookie.Doubleclick : Cleaned with backup :mozilla.13:C:\Documents and Settings\Kevin\Application Data\Mozilla\Firefox\Profiles\9j4lwp98.default\cookies.txt -> TrackingCookie.Advertising : Cleaned with backup :mozilla.14:C:\Documents and Settings\Kevin\Application Data\Mozilla\Firefox\Profiles\9j4lwp98.default\cookies.txt -> TrackingCookie.Advertising : Cleaned with backup :mozilla.15:C:\Documents and Settings\Kevin\Application Data\Mozilla\Firefox\Profiles\9j4lwp98.default\cookies.txt -> TrackingCookie.Advertising : Cleaned with backup :mozilla.20:C:\Documents and Settings\Kevin\Application Data\Mozilla\Firefox\Profiles\9j4lwp98.default\cookies.txt -> TrackingCookie.Casalemedia : Cleaned with backup ::Report End Thankyou, janak Almost forgot...... NO, I didnt find anything about this toolbar, shows no name on it, nothing in add/remove programs (under my acct) either. As a matter of fact, when I went to my google search (home page) and was gonna type in the neuber.com,,,, the toolbar popped up and kept taking the "n", did this for several times. When I pulled up the task manager and lowered it and got ready to type in the google search area, the "unkn" toolbar didnt come up then.

hi janak,

gone to his to run them.

they will scan all users accts

go to his add/remove programs and see whats there

yes, have a look

it found 6 tracking cookies

thats good, nothing to worry about there.

did you try atf cleaner, it will remove temp files and other unneeded stuff. much easier than doing it all manually, which i would suggest next. so is the toolbar still appearing?

:D unkn toolbar is gone now..... yippee, and tyvm

Yes, I ran the atf cleaner,,, very awesome program and fast too!!!

Couple last and final questions please. First, when I transfer all the "stuff" from this computer to my new one..... I'd like to not take all my son's stuff over there. I checked his add/remove programs and they seemed ok to me. But I dont need all his "junk" on my new computer. When he comes to visit this "old" one will be set up in another room anyways. I realize that you dont know which software program that is coming with the new computer, but do you think there is a way to only tranfer MY user stuff??????

As been mentioned before...... I have way too many "freebie" spyware, etc programs. I have already removed Windows Defender and Steganomos. I should then keep adaware and spybot s&d (with teatimer activated)??? What about Spywareblaster, CCleaner(has registry cleaning also) and the new ATF Cleaner??? All of those should stay?? And finally the Ewido,,,, although I think this is just a trial version???

Thanks,
janak

hi janak,

unkn toolbar is gone now

good.

a way to only tranfer MY user stuff

to be honest i couldnt tell you, ive never used any transfer type program before.

i might try this:
transfer everything to the new computer, then delete his user account on that computer.

I should then keep adaware and spybot s&d

two of the originals and good ones to keep.

Ewido,,,, although I think this is just a trial version

its a full version for 14days, then becomes a limited version after 14days
no harm in keeping it, up to you, but three is plenty.

CCleaner(has registry cleaning also) and the new ATF Cleaner

didnt know you had ccleaner, its like atf cleaner, but with more features as you know- if you use them keep ccleaner and uninstall atf cleaner

Spywareblaster

have never used it. i think the 2 or 3 you keep will be plenty.
------------------------------------------------------------------------
before you transfer files lets make new restore points just incase anything was archived.

NOTE: These instructions assume that you are using the default Windows XP Start Menu and have not changed to the Classic Start menu. To re-enable the default menu, right-click Start, click Properties, click Start menu (not Classic) and then click OK.

1. Turn off System Restore.
On the Desktop, right-click My Computer.
Click Properties.
Click the System Restore tab.
Check Turn off System Restore.
Click Apply, and then click OK.

2. Reboot. (will delete possibly infected restore points)

3. Turn ON System Restore.
On the Desktop, right-click My Computer.
Click Properties.
Click the System Restore tab.
UN-Check *Turn off System Restore*.
Click Apply, and then click OK.

4. Reboot (new clean restore point)

DANG!!!!! :rant2: Spoke too soon. Then unknown toolbar is still there. It always came up randomly and I just tried searching and upped it popped. Dont want to do the restore system thingy until I know for sure that this thing goes away. Any other suggestions???? Do I just need to live with it???? Im always careful and never fully type in it and hit enter. Not sure what it would do if I did completely let it do the search. Its aggravating to have to watch out for it and then bring up the taskmanager box before it lets me use google search bar again. Good advice on son's acct. ty. janak Hmmm, come to think of it, I just started using Google search as my home page. This toolbar never popped up when MSN was my home page and I was using their search bar. I might try switching back to MSN and see if that takes care of the problem.

hi janak,

Do I just need to live with it?

no, its your computer you control it, it dosnt control you.

iam thinking this isnt a malware toolbar with all the apps that youve run it surely would have been picked up.
try this as a experiment;
next time it pops up go ahead and type something in then hit enter, it would be intresting to see the results, if it takes you to a search engine or website

bring up the taskmanager box before it lets me use google search bar again

are you having to "end task' on this thing with taskmanager? any clues in there or notice anything under the processes tab that may be there, then its not in the list after you end task?

Ok, I'll try completing the search when it pops up again. No, I dont have to end task,,,, by pulling up the task manager I was trying to see if it would show me where it was coming from....... but when I pull up task manager toolbar goes away, lol. Of course, with me, I wouldnt know what I was looking for anyways, lol. Would it be located at the top of all the processes running, I wonder? Well that didnt take long. Ok, went and tried this on 3 different search bars, scandoo (with google highlighted), the regular google and then msn. When I go to type in the word female..... after I finished typing and hit enter, nothing happens, the search bar just disappears. But when I hit enter after I just type in the f or the fe .... on the scandoo site it brought up a scandoo web page security preferences page..... on the google site it brought up a google search options page.... and on the msn it brings up a msn health and fitness page, lol. I'll try another word and see if its any different. Gosh this is weird. Still on msn search and when i go to type in the word male it wont do anything, but if I hit enter after typing in "ma" .... it took me to slate.com (which looks to be a msn magazine page). Ok, on the other 2 search pages, I see what its doing,,, its not recognizing the full word,,,, but when you type in just one letter or two, its highlighting some phrase on the actual search page. For instance...... on the google page, when type in "ma" it automatically highlights the "IMAGES" thingy above the regular search bar. So when I typed in the "fe" , it went over to the right and highlighted "preferences". Hopefully Im not confusing you with my explainations, lol. Does this make any sense to you???? Its not an actual search the web bar, but a search the web page that Im on search bar?????? If Im on just a regular website that has a search bar and if I dont put my cursor in their search bar before I start to type in a word, the unkn toolbar pops up. But my cursor is always in the search box on google, etc . before I start typing. So dont know why unkn one would pop up then. Very confused here, lol.
