hi, me again. from hanging around a couple of hours i noticed that posts add up quick around here. i first posted a couple hours ago and i just found my thread already back on page 3. i'm perfectly willing to be patient for a reply, but since threads roll off the first page pretty quick i was wondering if i need to bump my thread periodically to make sure it gets seen and answered or do you guys search a couple of pages back for unanswered threads? i don't want to step on any toes here, so i thought i would ask about that sort of protocol here. thanks.
Welcome to the forum. :D

This will take a few steps so lets get started.

Step # 1

Please download and run CWShredder. Make sure that all browser windows are closed with the exception of Cwshredder and choose FIX.

http://www.majorgeeks.com/download4086.html

REBOOT

Step #2

Please download and run Spybot Search & Destroy and AdAware. Then follow the instructions in the links below to run.

Spybot Tutorial

AdAware Tutorial

Step # 3

Please do an online scan,

Trend Micro http://housecall.trendmicro.com/housecall/start_corp.asp

Make sure that you choose "fix" or "clean".

Reboot

Download the Hoster from here: » http://members.aol.com/toadbee/hoster.zip
Press 'Restore Original Hosts' and press 'OK'
Exit Program.

Reboot and post a new HiJackThis log
sorry it took so long to respond. my friend has been using his computer and i've been unable to have open access again until today. thanks for your help and your patience.

i had already run adaware and spybot immediately before i ran the log i first posted. but i did so again today for a fresh start. adaware takes an incredibly long time to sweep this laptop compared to when i've used it on other computers. wonder if that means anything. i downloaded cwshredder and ran that today as well. then i went to trend micro and ran the online scan. next i restored the hosts.

here is the new log:

ok, i booted into safe mode and fixed everything you had listed. i could not find the 180solutions file you mentioned. i did find a 404search (i don't know what that is) though, and there is a recurring problem with bullseye network as well. i've tried using the uninstall to get rid of bullseye but it forces you to take a push poll survey about why you're uninstalling just to proceed.

as usual, thanks for your help!!

thank you siggy for all your help. :) i took a look at the computer and i couldn't find the files you mentioned in your last post, and the url catchers weren't back again either. the last hjt log i ran looked pretty good. my friend is going to be out of town on business for awhile, and the pop-ups have virtually disappeared anyway, so at this point i think you can go ahead and close this thread. thanks again!
Now that you are clean, please follow these simple steps in order to keep your computer clean and secure:
  • Use an AntiVirus Software - It is very important that your computer has an anti-virus software running on your machine. This alone can save you a lot of trouble with malware in the future.

See this link for a listing of some online & their stand-alone antivirus programs:

Virus, Spyware, and Malware Protection and Removal Resources

  • Update your AntiVirus Software - It is imperitive that you update your Antivirus software at least once a week (Even more if you wish). If you do not update your antivirus software then it will not be able to catch any of the new variants that may come out.

  • Use a Firewall - I can not stress how important it is that you use a Firewall on your computer. Without a firewall your computer is succeptible to being hacked and taken over. I am very serious about this and see it happen almost every day with my clients. Simply using a Firewall in its default configuration can lower your risk greatly.

For a tutorial on Firewalls and a listing of some available ones see the link below:

    Understanding and Using Firewalls

  • Visit Microsoft's Windows Update Site Frequently - It is important that you visit http://www.windowsupdate.com regularly. This will ensure your computer has always the latest security updates available installed on your computer. If there are new updates to install, install them immediately, reboot your computer, and revisit the site until there are no more critical updates.

  • Install Spybot - Search and Destroy - Install and download Spybot - Search and Destroy with its TeaTimer option. This will provide realtime spyware & hijacker protection on your computer alongside your virus protection. You should also scan your computer with program on a regular basis just as you would an antivirus software.

A tutorial on installing & using this product can be found here:

Using Spybot - Search & Destroy to remove Spyware , Malware, and Hijackers

  • Install Ad-Aware - Install and download Ad-Aware. ou should also scan your computer with program on a regular basis just as you would an antivirus software in conjunction with Spybot.

A tutorial on installing & using this product can be found here:

Using Ad-aware to remove Spyware, Malware, & Hijackers from Your Computer

  • Install SpywareBlaster - SpywareBlaster will added a large list of programs and sites into your Internet Explorer settings that will protect you from running and downloading known malicious programs.

A tutorial on installing & using this product can be found here:

Using SpywareBlaster to protect your computer from Spyware and Malware

  • Update all these programs regularly - Make sure you update all the programs I have listed regularly. Without regular updates you WILL NOT be protected when new malicious programs are released.
Follow this list and your potential for being infected again will reduce dramatically.

Glad I was able to help.
