Hi

Hope you can help.

I have run Adaware several times (updated) and Spybot (updated) but still getting popup ads for porn, gambling etc. Disabled Active X and set for prompts. Sometimes ads open without saying yes at a prompt and sometimes after.

Currently only running hardware firewall. This is a new install of XP on a clean drive so nothing much in the way of legacy items about.

My Hijack this Log as follows.

Reboot in "safe" mode. Use the link in my signature to tell you how if necessary.

Find and delete:

c:\windows\localnrd.dll <— file

c:\windows\system32\hwpizgbg.exe <— file

Some malware files may be "hidden". Use the link in my signature to explain how to show "hidden" files if necessary.

Reboot in normal mode and post a new log file. :)
SUCCESS! Maybe Steps taken; might help someone else. Loaded AVG virus software (updated it an ran it, found a couple of trojans, popup prob still didn't go away) Loaded Kerio Firewall (updated etc) While surfing, these forums, AVG resident made me aware of a couple of trojans an ad preloader. AVG said run virus software to delete. Did that and it DID NOT find any virus/trojans. Searched Forums again, and again the AVG resident protrection noted a Trojan and asked me to Run the virus software. Did that, no result. Repeated the above step but noted the location of the files. They were in: C;\system volume information\_restore {B3E4CD2B-SF0F-4222-83A7-630DFD1287CB}-\RP38\ The files mentioned were: A0004807.EXE A0004902.EXE A0004794.DLL After following oinformation to unhide System Fules and make readable and writeable (instructions in Windows Help) I navigated to the folder and deleted the files. I then ran AVG custom on the system folders and this time they found a couple of others in another folder so I fixed/quarantined those. DC76.EXE DC75.EXE I now hope this has fixed the problem. Fingers crossed. I am guessing that AVG couldn't scan the System Volume Information folder correctly because of the XP file settings being hiden and secure. Don't know but when I took this setting off it found viruses. Now having innoculated my system as much as possible for present I hope the problem/s won't re-occur. Rimu1 :wavey:
Hi Micah Thanks for your help which I read after doing what I did above. I will howver run Hijack this again and ask you to have a look at the log. Not sure whether to follow your instructions in your post or not before getting confirmation. Thanks Rimu1

Great job!!!!

The log is clean!!!

GOD bless!!!

Items you may wish to consider to harden your defenses against future infections:

Read "How did I get infected in the first place?" here:

http://boards.cexx.org/viewtopic.php?t=957

Download IE-Spyad here:

https://netfiles.uiuc.edu/ehowes/www/resource.htm

IE-Spyad puts over 4000 known malicious web sites into IE's "restricted zone" to help prevent you from getting infected.

Check your browser settings here:

http://browsercheck.qualys.com/index.php

A series of "tests" (and suggested fixes) to help tweak IE's settings to help prevent infections when surfing the web.

Follow safe Internet practices:

1. Keep your virus definitions up to date, and scan your system regularly.

2. Don't open email, or download attachments from unrecognized email addresses.

3. Be careful when downloading email attachments, EVEN FROM PEOPLE YOU KNOW! Many virii, worms, and trojans infect a persons system then immeadiately spread themselves to the people in the infected persons addressbook via email attachments.

4. Be careful downloading files from the Internet. Scan all downloaded files with a reliable UP-TO-DATE antivirus program. Scan "zip" files BEFORE unzipping, and scan all unzipped files BEFORE USING THEM.

5. Keep your Windows and IE current with all the latest patches and updates.
(I am waiting till they get the bugs out before I upgrade to SP2 for XP)

A Big thak you Micah 6:8 I shall be looking at your "innoclution" tips, some of which I have allredy done. Perhaps you can clarify how a "Hosts File" comes into play in this area. I have read fors and againsts but would like to know your opinions and, given the variety of resources available on the web, different sources for obtaining and maintaining an updated list. Thanks Again. Rimu1 :wavey:
Thanks Micah 6:8 That should do it. Is theire no happy medium between having Java on or off? It seems like if you fully secure [sic], nothing is ever fully secure, you loose the functionality of Java run menus etc on GOOD sites. IE-SpyAd seems to block all Java? Rimu1
