After running the latest versions of SpyBot and AdAware, then rebooting and leaving the computer on overnight, I come to find two dozen ad popups. I know I'm supposed to have a better Topic Title, but I don't know who or what has hijacked me.

Thanks for any assistance.

You have the Peper Trojan. It is a very stubborn infection which requires a specific tool to remove. There are two tools available. Please follow these instructions in order:

1. Download Newuninst.exe.

2. Run it with an active internet connection.

3. Reboot to finish removing the entries it found.

4. Run the tool a second time (with an active internet connection).

5. Reboot to finish removing the entries it found.

The second tool which does not require Internet Access to Clean is:

1. Please Download PeperFix.exe,

2. Start the tool and click Find and Fix.

3. Reboot to finish removing what it found.

4. Run the tool a second time (again with an active internet connection).

5. Reboot to finish removing the entries.

Go here and run online scans (all), allow them to delete whatever they find:

TrendMicro HouseCall
eTrust AntiVirus Web Scanner
Panda ActiveScan
Note any thing that can't be fixed
Reboot when done. Rescan with HJT and post a new log here.
A. Did Newuninst.exe and PeperFix.exe as instructed.

—————————————-

B. TrendMicro HouseCall

I got this dialog box:

Unable to delete the infected entire contents of the compressed file 'C:\Documents and Settings\Owner\Local Settings\Temp\THI1B4A.tmp\twaintec.cab'iA

Do you want to delete the whole file?

I answered "Yes".

Same for 'alchem.cab'iA in the same directory.

Then this dialog box:

Unable to clean the file 'C:\Documents and Settings\Owner\Local Settings\Temp\kYLn.exe' because it is currently in use

Final Result: It found 55 files, deleted 54 files, leaving kYLn.exe.

—————————————-

C. eTrust AntiVirus Web Scanner

I was asked if I wanted to install something. I said Yes. But when the webpage came up, it said: "Control failed to load. Are you using Internet Explorer 4.0 or above?" I pressed the "start scan" button, but nothing happened. I added http://www3.ca.com/securityadvisor/ to my Trusted Sites list, to no avail. Moving on to the next step.

—————————————-

D. Panda ActiveScan

When going here, my PC went to http://www.ads234.com/ and showed an ad warning me about Spyware and such. I assume this is caused by one of the beasts which I am trying to clean from my PC!?

Found 8 Infected files, Disinfected 6. It couldn't handle hostprep.exe and host.dll from within payload.cab (see the Scan Report below).

F. Also of note: My son uses Kazaa and Sonic, as he is very into music. I paid for Kazaa on the hope that this would mean I would get a version that didn’t make a mess of the computer. Does his use of these programs imply that keeping this computer clean is going to be hopeless?

Thanks!

Need to run fix for all users please post another log for each.
A. I will read the suggested articles. I haven't had a chance to do so yet.

With regards to multiple users—this machine came with "Administrator" and "Owner". To my knowledge, no one has ever run as "Administrator", and all uses have been as Owner. I will, however, logon as Owner another time and re-run HijackThis, per your suggestion.

Should that be posted in this thread, or in a new thread?

Are we surprised two of them weren't there? I know I've removed VBouncer (in Normal Mode) several times.

D. Deleting files and folders

I know how to show hidden files and folders, and did so. Nonetheless, some of the folders and files you listed I could not find. (I re-read your instructions just to be sure I was doing it right.) Is that a problem? Here are the ones I couldn't find:

C:\Program Files\VBouncer folder NOT THERE

Also, what about specialoffers2.exe ? I didn't delete it, but it was next to specialoffers4.exe.

Note that I didn't know where to find samend.exe

G. Also please describe how your computer behaves at the moment

It's behaving quite well. It boots quickly (for Windows :-) and IE starts up quickly. No popups so far. I haven't used it much, except to do what you've asked.

I noticed that NOTEPAD.EXE, which is in C:\WINNT, isn't being found. HijackThis seems to open it just fine. For my own files, I am starting it directly and then opening .TXT files from within Notepad. I don't know if this was an issue from a hijacker, or something which "just happened" sometime during the 20 months we've had the computer.

Thanks!

Please read through the ideas and free software listed below that will help to keep your computer clean.
Some of these you may have install or may have done already.

Install a firewall.ZoneAlarm FREE

Ensure that an Antivirus is updated weekly and running. AVG antivirus from Grisoft is a very good FREE antivirus program.

Make sure you have the latest critical updates from windows update.

SpywareBlaster will prevent the installation of ActiveX-based spyware, adware, browser hijackers, dialers, and other potentially unwanted pests.

IE-SPYAD puts over 4000 known 'bad' sites into your IE restricted zone so that they cannot install malware on your PC.

Google toolbar has a very good built in popup blocker with a nice search bar. To provide privacy, select disable advanced features when installing.

Check your system for latest virus definitions with an online virus scan.
TrendMicro HouseCall
eTrust AntiVirus Web Scanner
Panda ActiveScan

Check your system for latest trojan definitions with an Online trojan scan

And also see this link for additional security information.
So how did I get infected in the first place?

Please consider using Firefox
http://texturizer.net/firefox/index.html

Do not let any site install anything if you do not know what it is.

samend.exe<<

Check both
C:\WINNT\System32
C:\WINNT\
