I need some help ridding my computer of about:blank. Spysweeper and similar programs have not worked. about:blank keeps reappearing. Other sites also appear as well as unwanted popups and additions to favorites. Below is the hijackthis! log. I appreciate any help.

Copy the contents of the quote box to Notepad.
Name the file findme.bat
Save as type All Files
Save on the Desktop.

Reg save "HKLM\Software\Microsoft\Windows NT\CurrentVersion\Windows" windows1.hiv
ren windows1.hiv windows.txt





Double click on findme.bat
This will create a file on the desktop named windows.txt
Copy the contents of windows.txt and paste it in your next reply.

Hi,

Download the following CWshredder, Ad-aware, & Spy-Bot.

- Updating Ad-aware:
Double-Click the Desktop Icon > Click 'Check For Updates Now' > Click 'Connect'

- Updating Spybot:
Double-Click the Desktop Icon > Click Update > Drop-Down Box UniDo(Europe) > Select Pure-Elite(USA) or EON (AU) > Click 'Search for Updates' > Click 'Download Updates'


Now rebooot into safe mode (press f8 during reboot, select safe mode) and DON'T reconnect to the net.

-Double-Click CWShredder and click 'Fix'

-Close CWShredder, open Ad-aware and make the following changes to the settings in Ad-aware.

- Under Ad-aware 6 > Settings (Gear at the top) > Tweak > Scanning Engine:
check: "Unload recognized processes during scanning."

- Under Ad-aware 6 > Settings (Gear at the top) > Tweak > Cleaning Engine:
Check: "Let Windows remove files in use at next reboot."

Press 'Proceed'

Press 'Start'

- Select option 'Use Custom scanning options'
- Click 'Activate in-depth scan'
- Press 'Select drives\folders to scan' Select the active partition which is usually C:

- Click 'Customize'

- Make sure the following are all are Checked:
*'Scan Within Archives'
*'Scan Active Processes'
*'Scan Registry'
*'Deep Scan Registry'
*'Scan My IE Favorites For Banned URL'S
*'Scan My Hosts File'

- Click 'Proceed'

Now press "Next" to let Ad-aware scan your drives…

Allow the Ad-aware to fix what it finds.

Close Ad-aware and open Spybot.
- Click 'Search & Destroy'
- Click 'Check for problems' (the program will now search your HDD)
- Make sure all finding are checked and click 'Fix Selected Problems'


Close SpyBot and Reboot!

Reboot but don't connect to the internet, run hijackthis and place a check next to the following.

and click fix. Reboot into safe mode and delete the following file.

Reboot back into normal mode and post a fresh log in your thread.

Thanks a bunch for all the help. I believe I followed the instructions verbatim.
Below is the new log. When I rebooted and went online to post, I was not directed to about:blank, thankfully. But, the log below appears to contain several entries that we had tried to remove before. Also, with one of the spysweeper programs, I continue to be notified that unwanted nasty sites are attempting to add themselves to my favorites.

As of tonight, spysweeper is not picking up anything. It looks like the coast is clear. Thank you so much for your help. It is truly appreciated. Other than increasing security settings, any hints on avoiding this trouble again? S. Scott.

Increasing the level of security on your system is the best bet. To prevent the hijackers from taking over your system, increase the level of security on your system. Don't allow the hijackers to take you over!! Review these articles to increase the level of security.

Also reset your restore points

Turn off System Restore.
Right-click My Computer.
Click Properties.
Click the System Restore tab.
Check Turn off System Restore.
Click Apply, and then click OK.

Reboot.

Turn System Restore Back On.
Right-click My Computer.
Click Properties.
Click the System Restore tab.
UN-Check *Turn off System Restore*.
Click Apply, and then click OK
