100% Disk Usage [Solved]

Last night I was watching a youtube video on my firefox browser when it froze. I hit ctrl+alt+del to get to task manager to try to end the task, but it wouldnt end. My disk usage was at 100% and the laptop was going slowly. I tried restarting it, but couldn't and had to hold down the power button to shut it down

Turned it back on this morning, started fine, and opened firefox to search google for something, firefox froze again, I ctrl+alt+del again to get task manager and again couldn't end the task and again had 100% disk usage

I again had to hold down the power button to shut my laptop down. I started it back up and immediately ran MBAM, updated it and scanned. It removed some items (nearly all of them were from LenovoBrowserGuard, something that came on my Lenovo laptop). I restarted through MBAM and as it started the restart process, I got a windows popup saying SkyDrive.exe wasn't working or responding (don't know what that is)

It finished restarting & I opened task manager again. Disk Usage started at 0%, but steadliy climbed to 100% within a few seconds. A few seconds later and disk usage was back down to 1-5% with occasional spikes up to 40-50%. I open Chrome and posted on here. When I first opened Chrome disk usage hit 100% again, before going back to 1-5% and spikes up to 50%.

I dunno, if the spikes up to 50% disk usage are normal, but I don't recall seeing it that high before when using task manager to shut down programs

Just wanted to make sure my laptop is back to normal and good to go. Anything I can do to double check it & make sure I caught the problem?

Thanks

OS - Win 8.1

Browser - Firefox v38, Chrome v48

Please download Farbar Recovery Scan Tool and save it to your DESKTOP

Note: You need to run the version compatible with your system. If you are not sure which version applies to your system download both of them and try to run them. Only one of them will run on your system, that will be the right version.

How to determine whether a computer is running a 32-bit version or 64-bit version of the Windows operating system
A simple way to check your system: Start –> Computer (right click) –> Properties

[external image: FRST_zps5d956a1a.jpg]

  •
  • Right click to run as administrator (XP users click run after receipt of Windows Security Warning - Open File). When the tool opens click Yes to disclaimer.
  • Just keep the defaults as in the picture checkmarked
  • Press Scan button.
  • It will produce a log called FRST.txt in the same directory the tool is run from.
  • Please copy and paste log back here.
  • The first time the tool is run it generates another log (Addition.txt - also located in the same directory as FRST.exe/FRST64.exe). Please also paste that along with the FRST.txt into your reply.

Hey, thanks for the help! I tried putting all 3 logs in 1 post, but it wouldn't let me post (when I hit Post, I would see a little bar at the top of my screen, but it would disappear and nothing would post, or it would go to page that said data timeout 30 seconds or to a page that said web error). I tried putting aswMBR & FRST logs in one post & Addition log in a separate post, but it still wouldn't let me post them. Tried posting the logs 1 at a time starting with FRST log, but again't couldn't get anything to post on here

So, I'm trying the only other thing I can think of, trying to attach the 2 longer logs. If that's rude or inconvenient or even against the forum rules then I apologize but I couldn't think of anything else to do. Can't be an internet issue b/c other sites are working fine & I even made my phone a hotspot & used it, still wouldn't work

Hi,

Your FRST log is fairly large, thats most likely why you couldn't post it….no problem

All and all the logs look pretty healthy.  SkyDrive is a backup program from Microsoft, the same thing happens to me, just dont worry about it

Lenovo is known for installing a lot of crapware, most of it is not needed

Lets run a few clean up programs and see if they find anything. The instructions for AdwCleaner after you run a scan is to CLEAN, but before you do that, look it over and uncheck anything you want to keep

Also, you have Malwarebytes installed, open it, check for updates follow my instructions and set it up that way, then run the Threat scan and post the log if it finds anything

When you ran AdwCleaner, did you use the clean function ?  That SweetLabs is somewhere in the grey area.

How is your system behaving now ?

Yes I cleaned and it's running better thanks! Is it safe to use Firefox or was it just a coincidene I was having the issues while using it?

edit - my definition of better is that disk usage hovers in the 0-4% range with most spikes being around 15%

Your disk usage appears ok.  What I would do is open FF and lets set it back to company defaults

Open FF and click on the Help Tab and then Troubleshooting information and then click on Refresh Firefox

Let me know how it went
