Does anyone know of a safe site to get a free fax line for occasional use? I have a fax capable NEW printer and it would be handy to have, but considering how few that I send, it would be an unwise investment. Thanks, Suzy

can you give us a link to this printer, faxes are usually just sent down your telephone line, so might just need a cable connected from your telephone point to it if it has a built in modem.

Do I not need a separate number for the fax machine function ?
Suzy
no you do not need a separate phone number or dedicated separate phone line for faxing.
it does have 2 rj-11 ports so without actually reading the manual i'd say all you need to do is connect a telephone cable to it, and maybe a telephone to the second port if you wanted to, doubt the telephone is a necessity tho.
you might have to set the printer to manually receive faxes or set a very long ring time otherwise every time the phone rings the printer will answer it before you do.
to send faxes all you probably need to do is phone the number from the printer and then let it do it's thing.
so all you need is a telephone cable and maybe a phone adaptor that will give you 2 connection points instead of 1 where the phone line comes into the home or where the phone is connected in the room where the printer is going.
no idea on american fittings but in the uk i'd use something like these.
splitter :- http://www.amazon.co.uk/Generic-Telephone-Socket-Doubler/dp/B000WB9R3I
the splitter goes into where the phone is currently plugged in and then your phone would go into 1 side of the splitter and the cable in the other and then into the printer, and that is all you need to be able to fax from the printer.
