Looks like Windows 7 Pro X64. See here to fix the problem:

Extract Files from Windows 7 Installation DVD

See the yellow Tip box for where to get your version of Windows 7 if you don't have a install DVD.

Ztruker, I can't thank you enough.  Way beyond the call of duty with extra advice.  I'm in the process of downloading now.  Hopefully all will go well.  With much appreciation, gw

Thank you for the courtesy of a followup.  Guess I need more than luck.  Got the download of Win7 completed - 2 hours, though not exactly as instructed.  Did a search for avrt.dll and found 9 instances of which only one showed 0 KB.  So I figured that's the one.  After many tries for permission, and probably breaking security rules, I delete then replaced the one.  Opened Total Recorder and got same "can't find sound device."  I do not get this from VLC media player or Audacity.  So I'm terribly frustrated and don't know what to do next except again to run recovery - ugh.  Unless you have another suggestion, how can I do a reinstall from the downloaded Win7.  I appreciate your time and patience. gw    P.S. are you Rich?

First, backup your data. Once you have that, try a Repair Install. It should not touch your data and will leave some of your programs installed and working. Others will need to be reinstalled. Instructions here:

http://www.sevenforums.com/tutorials/3413-repair-install.html

Before doing that, try the following:

Install and run the System Update Readiness Tool (SURT): See here What is the System Update Readiness Tool?

Open a Elevated Command Prompt.

Click on the Start button and type cmd.
DO NOT press Enter or click Go.
Look at the upper part of the window and you will see cmd.exe.
Right click on it and select Run as Administrator.

Type SFC /scannow and press Enter. See if the Component store problems are fixed. Run 2-3 times if necessary.
