Hello Under security, all sits are at default where I want them. Restricted, however, is changed to a looser level as soon as I use the PC. I have to reset to default which secures the level then apply and OK. I have MBAM, SpywareBlaster, and SuperAntiSpyware. MBAM, the newest free version is set to check rootkits although the default is not checked. My 2 questions are; Why would root kits not be checked and 2 - should I check it.
More importantly, any idea why this restricted box is continually changed as it is? Is there a program conflict that would be causing this or do I have a key logger doing this? Thank you Peter
The mbam question I have seen answered before, and in simple terms they left it unchecked by default, because some systems may not be able to handle that deep a scan, basically slowing the system down to an unusable state in the worst case, but if a system has enough "power" to handle a deeper scan then certainly check the box, and leave it that way, that's what I do, but they simply took the view of making it easier for lower spec systems, so they didn't get the impression the software is no good, and blaming it for slowing the system down etc.
As to the security setting(s), I have noticed the same thing every so often, but I don't have a clear answer as to what\why it happens, I do not believe it is anything nasty, my guess is that the security software updates something that cause this, maybe a pro would have a better answer (more specific), but that's what I suspect, so I would say there is nothing to be that concerned about, but as I said a pro may have a deeper answer on that, but hope this answers your question(s), a bit at least.
Hi Peter. Normally, the restricted sites zone is empty. Specifically, there are no websites listed in there. Therefore, the settings in that zone wouldn't matter anyways.
However, I believe Spyware Blaster has modified your restricted sites zone and added a bunch of sites into that zone for your protection. I believe it is also normal behavior that it changes those settings. So, what you experience is perfectly normal.
To test this, it has been suggested that if you don't run Spyware Blaster (disable it, or don't load it) then you should be able to change the settings back to default and they should stay that way.
On a side note, even though it appears your settings may be more lax, I would say its probably more likely stricter. Typically it defaults to High security. You probably see that it is set to "Custom," wherein it could be stricter or more lax. Its hard to tell without comparing the changes.
However, I believe Spyware Blaster has modified your restricted sites zone
Good call batman lol, I was pretty sure it was protection that was behind it, but I had no idea what it was, so to test this, I checked for an update, but there were none, so instead I just applied what was there already, and low and behold, my setting changed as you said it would, so at least I know what is now, Thanks for that.
