Trying to deal with "svchost 100%" problem. Looking through past posts, looks like Paws may have the solution. However, I can't seem to be able log in as administrator as required.
Open the Start Menu, click on All Programs and Accessories, right click on Command Prompt, and click on Run as administrator.
(make sure you are seeing the command prompt with C:\Windows\System32 as this will indicate you have achieved elevated privileges with the command prompt.)
Am the only user, listed as administrator in users and shown with password. Gets me into the machine on bootup…but, I get to the end of Command Prompt above and it says bad username or password. Can someone get me past this roadblock?
This (FSUTIL) is usually used to amend the Transactional Resource Manager in Vista (and 7) when there is a problem with certain Windows updates….
If you have a problem with a Win XP operating system then it might be best to tell us exactly what symptoms you are experiencing. when they manifest themselves, what happened immediately before the problem ocurred, what steps yopu have taken so far etc.
If you provide us with all relevant information including make and model number of your computer, details of the edition of XP 32 or 64 bit, Service Pack levels and if all other Windows updates have installed OK then one of our members will likely get back to you with some suggestions for your consideration….
You mention:
"svchost 100%" problem"
but there could be a whole shedload of reasons for 100% CPU activity with the "svchost" process
I know it may seem like a lot of work to set it all out but often (although tedious) its a faster way of getting an accurate reply that will help.
The svchost 100% seems to be caused by Windows Update. We've been having this problem for a couple months now. I finally found a fix.
After installing SP3, install the latest cumulative security update for the version of Internet Explorer you have. Try Windows Update from the Start Menu. If you get an error, reboot and try again.
Go to Google and search on cumulative security update for internet explorer xx. Download and install it. See if that fixes the problem It has for me.
Windows update was taking 4-6 hours to several days to complete. Since doing the above, update is back to normal.
Thanks Guys, Glad to hear someone else had this problem. My first thought was "OMG, I have a virus".
Very slow computer. Definately connected with Automatic Updates. I was dealing with it by stopping the AU service. But, of course, no updates then. Wasn't finding much on the net about the problem except it happened about five years ago with XP Pro.
Well, while booting and rebooting today, I took three updates from MS. Not absolutely sure yet but I think one of those updates fixed the problem. Hope so, Thanks for the help.
Thanks Ztruker, I have IE7 on my machine. Prefer Firefox but have IE if I need it. Found this on my machine - KB2888505-IE7 dated 11/21 in my windows\ie7updates folder. Must have come in yesterday on one of those updates from MS. Maybe they got enough complaints they added it to a global update. Not to get too far afield here, Do you think MS would deliberately mess with XP to force movement to 7 or 8? Hows that for a conspiricy theory!! What am I going to do come April? Maybe the new president will extend XP support….again. Lot of people still using XP. Not a good idea to piss off customers. Not everyone is using a tablet these days. Maybe they got our money they don't care.
Anyway, thanks for the help. The updates that came in yesterday solved the svchost 100% problem. No sign of it today.
Win XP will become more and more vulnerable to attack as time goes by. Older versions of IE add to its vulnerability, so its a good idea to keep IE up to date (latest version is IE8). Even if you don't use it, because you use a different browser an older unpatched version of IE7 leaves potentially big holes in your computer systems security.
As you know support from Microsoft stops after 7th April (so no more security patches or updates) its even more important to make sure everything possible is as up to date as it can be and check that your disc images are suitable and allow you to reimage your system quickly and easily….
