Way to determine if web app is down!

Hi, I just want to know if there is any way to determine if an web application is down. It cannot be done by pinging the server as the app server can host multitude of web applications and app server may be pinging correctly even if the web app hosted on that app server is down. Can anyone has some suggestions?
