AOL recently shut down our account due to a security breach. Apparently someone had our master screen name and password and was opening other aol accounts. AOL noticed this and shutdown the account and now we've had to change our passwords. AOL told us this could only have happened….by giving the password to someone….by opening You Have Pictures and giving a password & sn….or by downloading a trojan. Well we did neither of the first two and if we have a trojan McAfee is not detecting it. I am sending a copy of my logfile from hijackthis. Can anyone tell me if they see anything that shouldnt be there? Your help will be greatly appreciated. Thanks!

Greetings and welcome to TomCoyote.com!

May your day be blessed by those you love and those you love be blessed by HIM. - Coyote

I looked over the log, and couldn't see any trojans or keylogging programs in there.

I would suggest you try these 3 free online virus removal tools:

Trend-Micro:
http://housecall.trendmicro.com/housecall/start_corp.asp

Panda:
http://www.pandasoftware.com/activescan/

Etrust:
http://www3.ca.com/securityadvisor/virusinfo/scan.aspx

Let them remove any infections found. Reboot inbetween each scan.

I do see a few things in the log that are "spyware".

These entries are considered "spyware" (but they wouldn't be responsible for your password security being breached):

R1 - HKCU\Software\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\Main,Search Bar = http://red.clientapps.yahoo.com/customize/…rch/search.html

R1 - HKCU\Software\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\Main,Search Page = http://red.clientapps.yahoo.com/customize/…//www.yahoo.com

R1 - HKLM\Software\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\Main,Default_Page_URL = http://red.clientapps.yahoo.com/customize/…://my.yahoo.com

R1 - HKLM\Software\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\Main,Default_Search_URL = http://red.clientapps.yahoo.com/customize/…//www.yahoo.com

R1 - HKLM\Software\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\Main,Search Bar = http://red.clientapps.yahoo.com/customize/…rch/search.html

R1 - HKLM\Software\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\Main,Search Page = http://red.clientapps.yahoo.com/customize/…//www.yahoo.com

R1 - HKCU\Software\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\SearchURL,(Default) = http://red.clientapps.yahoo.com/customize/…//www.yahoo.com

You can "fix" those entries with Hijack This!, and reboot.

I can think of another scenario in which your account information may have been compromised.

If any of you used another computer (at school, work, library, college, friend or neighbor or relative's house, etc.) to access AOL, there could have been a keylogging trojan on that other computer that stole your password.

I hope this helps.

:)

P.S. I have AOL, too. I wouldn't believe everything they tell you.
Thank you Micah for your quick reply! I ran all three virus scans you suggested and they all found no virus's. I'm actually beginning to believe it may have been AOL's security that was breached and not our computer. I did log on to AOL from work the other day to check email, however we have very tight virus protection and firewalls(law enforcement), but I will run virus scan there tomorrow just to be sure. One more question, is it possible this info could have been gained through Outlook Express? The reason I ask is because I noticed my icon for Documents from the start menu has changed and is the same icon as Outlook Express. Thank you again for your help you guys are super!
Hmmm…

I can't explain the change in your ICON. But in order for your password to be compromised there would have to be a program on your machine that was sending it to a specific place on the net.

I seriously doubt that Outlook was responsible.

It would be interesting to know if you found anything on the machine at work. When it comes to computers, there's no such thing as "bullet-proof".

There are people all over the world that do nothing but try to hack into other peoples affairs 24-7. If there's a "crack" somewhere, they'll eventually find it, and get in.

I've written computer programs for almost 30 years. I firmly believe that there's no such thing as a "perfect" program.

GOD bless!!!

M68 :)

P.S. Do you ever "copy/paste" your password anywhere while online?

It is also possible for web sites you visit to access this "paste buffer" on your machine without you even knowing about it.

You can stop it with a security setting in IE.

Check your browser settings here:

http://browsercheck.qualys.com/index.php

A series of "tests" (and suggested fixes) to help tweak IE's settings to help prevent infections (and security breaches) when surfing the web.
Micah
Since our last communication I have been searching everywhere to find the breach in the security of our system. I ran hijackthis again tonight and noticed something that wasnt there yesterday. Please look at the last log entry and let me know what you think. Also if this is my problem can you tell from looking at it where it is originating in my system because virus scans just arent picking it up.
Thanks again.
Jane

If you're referring to the line that starts with "O17", it is a legitamate entry. It's not a virus or keylogger. The log still looks clean. I'd have to believe that if no one in your family was duped by one of those password stealing scams prevalent on AOL, and no one used the password on a different computer other that your home PC that was infected with a keylogger, then the fault was not yours. :)
