[Resolved] AIM Trojan won't let me access AOL?

26 min read

This thread's last reply is from . Advice, software, and links below may be out of date — treat specific steps and download links with caution.

Looking for the outcome? Ask AI

IS this possible?

I hit one of those weird sites by accident…the ones that have weird symbols in the link or whatever…

Im on my own contact list, so when I Hit it I instantly got an IM from myself saying to click some link for a free ipad or whatever, from my own AIM address, clearly it sent to all the people on my friends list.

Somebody suggested changing my AIM password so I tried but anytime I go to a site off of AOL, such as trying to log into my mail or change my account information, and password, it goes to the AOL oops this page is unavailable page. I can log onto AOL through AOL instead of internet explorer but to change the password it still links to the website I cant access…could this be because of the trojan?

I ran ad-aware, AVG, AND spybot, all in safe mode, hoping it would delete stuff…it got a couple tracking cookies but nothing major, but I still deleted everything they told me to on the programs.

Im hoping the AOL problem is completely unrelated…oh, also my laptop cant get to the websites either…does that mean its not a trojan? Or that it is and it is attached to my ip address or something…I dont even know.

what do I do from here?

Hi HHHisthegame and welcome to What the Tech. :)

I'm Dakeyras and I am going to try to assist you with your problem. Please take note of the below:
  • I will start working on your Malware issues, this may or may not, solve other issues you have with your machine.
  • The fixes are specific to your problem and should only be used for this issue on this machine!
  • The process is not instant. Please continue to review my answers until I tell you your machine is clear. Absence of symptoms does not mean that everything is clear.
  • If you don't know, stop and ask! Don't keep going on.
  • Please reply to this thread. Do not start a new topic.
  • Refrain from running self fixes as this will hinder the malware removal process.
  • It may prove beneficial if you print of the following instructions or save them to notepad as I post them.
  • Your security programs may give warnings for some of the tools I will ask you to use. Be assured, any links I give are safe.
Next:

Now please go to Start >> Control Panel >> Add/Remove Programs and remove the following (if present):

Ad-Aware <– Active in system memory, thus taking up valuable system resources and not particularly effective at all in my humble opinion.
Ask.com Toolbar <– Has undersirible characteristics.
Spybot - Search & Destroy <– You may reinstall this when i give the all clear. if left in-place it will hinder the malware removal process.

To do so, click once on each of the above in turn to highlight and then click on the Remove button.

Note: Take extra care in answering questions posed by any Uninstaller. Some questions may be worded to deceive you into keeping the program.

Scan with GMER:

Please download GMER Rootkit Scanner from here and save it to your Desktop.
  • Double click the .exe file. If asked to allow gmer.sys driver to load, please consent
  • If it gives you a warning about rootkit activity and asks if you want to run scan…click on NO

    [external image: Posted Image]
Click the image to enlarge it

  • In the right panel, you will see several boxes that have been checked. Uncheck the following …
    • Sections
    • IAT/EAT
    • Drives/Partition other than Systemdrive (typically C:\)
    • Show All (don't miss this one)
  • Then click the Scan button & wait for it to finish
  • Once done click on the [Save..] button, and in the File name area, type in "Gmer.txt" or it will save as a .log file
  • Save it where you can easily find it, such as your desktop, and post it in reply
**Caution**
Rootkit scans often produce false positives. Do NOT take any action on any "<— ROOKIT" entries

Note: Do not run any programs while Gmer is running.

Scan with OTL:

  • Please download OTL and save it to your Desktop.
Make sure that OTL.exe is on the your Desktop before running the application!
  • Close all other open windows, then double-click OTL.exe to start the application.
  • Under Output, ensure that Minimal Output is selected.
  • Under the Standard Registry box change it to All
  • Check the following:
    • Scan all users.
      Lop check.
      Purity check
  • Copy the text in the code box below and paste it into the Custom Scans/Fixes box:
    netsvcs

  • Click Quick Scan upper left of window.
  • When the scan is finished, two Notepad files will open:
    OTListIt.txt <– Will be opened
    Extra.txt <– Will be minimized
  • Please post the contents of these two Notepad files in your next reply.
When completed the above, please post back the following in the order asked for:
  • How is you computer performing now, any further symptoms and or problems encountered?
  • Gmer Log.
  • Both OTL logs. <– Post them individually please, IE: one Log per post/reply.
After I changed the password at school when I got back later my AOL account was letting me log in again, it wasnt going to that "Oops" page anymore…the fact that it also didnt work on my laptop makes me wonder whether or not that was a related problem…but either way Im nervous to log into AOL again or AIM in case it gets the new password…. Anyways, I remembered one other problem, sometimes Ill be on a website and suddenly will be redirected to a page made to look like a My Computer screen, saying its "Scanning for viruses" before giving me a message to say to download some anti-spyware thing, clearly this is not a real offer. And as I said there was the issue of my AIM sending trojans out. The GMER thing was running fine suddenly it went to a blue screen and said something about a problem dumping physical memory or whatever, that it had to restart, and some file that I cant remember something that ended in _corrupt or something. BCCode : 4e BCP1 : 00000007 BCP2 : 000847DB BCP3 : 00000001 BCP4 : 00000000 OSVer : 5_1_2600 SP : 3_0 Product : 256_1 ^That is the error report it gave me afterwords when I turned my computer off and on. I guess Ill try the next program but Im worried that if I try the GMER thing again Ill do serious damage to the computer.
Hi. :)

I guess Ill try the next program but Im worried that if I try the GMER thing again Ill do serious damage to the computer.

By all means run the OTL scan as I outlined.

Running Gmer again will not harm your computer what-so ever, however since problems encountered and though not ideal from my point of view re researching a Gmer log please run the scan in safe mode and follow my prior instruction for the scan.

—————-

How to boot into Safe Mode:

Restart your computer and as soon as it starts booting up again continuously tap the F8 key. A menu should come up where you will be given the option to enter Safe Mode, do so.

If any problems refer to this tutorial.

Hi. :)

Going back to this you mentioned:-

After I changed the password at school when I got back later my AOL account was letting me log in again, it wasnt going to that "Oops" page anymore…the fact that it also didnt work on my laptop makes me wonder whether or not that was a related problem…but either way Im nervous to log into AOL again or AIM in case it gets the new password….

When I give the all clear I think it would be prudent to reset the password and secret question again. I will explain about how to do this so there a very minimal chance anyone would be able to guess your new password in due course.

ran the scan in safe mode…it took 3 hours and only gave this

Not a problem and we will merely use a different rootkit scanning application later on.

Viewpoint Software Advice:

This is just to make you aware of the nature of the aforementioned applications. Though not exactly classed as malware they do have some undersirible characteristics. However there is no point uninstalling as the AOL software applications you have installed, next time used will download/install the aforementioned again with out your knowledge. Isn't that nice of AOL and their applications! :wall:

Now there is a possible way around this but I am not wholly convinced it works to be honest but worth trying none the less:-

Open AOL and go to help on the toolbar. Select About AOL. Next is the a little known feature. Depress CTRL+D to access a secret panel to disable all of the desktop and IM dubious features that are associated with viewpoint. This is the so called only way to prevent AOL from re-installing Viewpoint at AOL startup.

If this does work I do suggest you consider uninstalling:-

ViewpointMediaPlayer

Next:

Your FireFox browser is out of date:-

Mozilla Firefox (3.0.15)

We will update this in due course, for the time being do not use it until updated.

Out of date Java installations pose a security risk. It can be used by malware as a means to infect a computer and or re-infect. We will update this in due course when we update Mozilla Firefox.

Now please go to Start >> Control Panel >> Add/Remove Programs and remove the following (if present):

Java™ 6 Update 13

To do so, click once on each of the above in turn to highlight and then click on the Remove button.

Note: Take extra care in answering questions posed by any Uninstaller. Some questions may be worded to deceive you into keeping the program.

Backup the Registry:

Modifying the Registry can create unforeseen problems, so it always wise to create a backup before doing so.

  • Please go here and download ERUNT.
  • ERUNT (Emergency Recovery Utility NT) is a free program that allows you to keep a complete backup of your registry and restore it when needed.
  • Double click on erunt-setup.exe to Install ERUNT by following the prompts.
  • Use the default install settings but say no to the portion that asks you to add ERUNT to the Start-Up folder. You can enable this option later if you wish.
  • Start ERUNT either by double clicking on the desktop icon or choosing to start the program at the end of the setup process.
  • Choose a location for the backup. Note: the default location is C:\WINDOWS\ERDNT which is acceptable.
  • Make sure that at least the first two check boxes are selected.
  • Click on OK
  • Then click on YES to create the folder.
Note: If it is necessary to restore the registry, open the backup folder and start ERDNT.exe

Custom OTL Script:
  • Double-click OTL.exe to start the program.
  • Copy the lines from the codebox to the clipboard by highlighting ALL of them and pressing CTRL + C (or, after highlighting, right-click and choose Copy):

When completed the above, please post back the following in the order asked for:
  • How is your computer performing now, any further symptoms and or problems encountered?
  • OTL Log.
  • Malwarebytes Anti-Malware Log.
  • Blacklight Log.
Its hard to tell about the performance since all the problems, (The fake IMs being sent from my name, the redirecting of the IE page) are sporadic and dont happen that often, so it's hard to know…plus the only way I can tell if the IMs got sent out is if a friend tells me they got one. I will say that my computer has grown gradually slower over time, but that could be because of new programs and stuff…I dunno Anyways here's the OTL log, but malwarebytes and blacklight both didnt find anything All processes killed ========== OTL ========== Registry key HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Explorer\Browser Helper Objects\{5C255C8A-E604-49b4-9D64-90988571CECB}\ deleted successfully. Hi. :)

malwarebytes and blacklight both didnt find anything

Fair enough, normally I would like to be able to review the logs but since nothing was flagged not a problem.

There is a fair few user accounts on the system, if they are not used it would be best to remove them.

Reset SP3 Firewall:

Click on Start >> Run… and cut/paste in the following and click on OK
firewall.cpl
Click on the Advanced tab >> Restore Defaults >> At the prompt click on Yes >> OK

Now click on the General tab >> select On(recommended) >> OK.

Note: When I give the all clear I will provide some advice about installing a third party software firewall, as the SP3 in-built only provides in-bound protection via a limited capacity and not out-bound.

GooredFix:

Please download GooredFix from one of the locations below and save it to your Desktop.

Download Mirror #1
Download Mirror #2
  • Ensure all Firefox windows are closed.
  • To run the tool, double-click on GooredFix.exe.
  • When prompted to run the scan, click Yes.
  • GooredFix will check for infections, and then a log will appear. Please post the contents of that log in your next reply (it can also be found on your desktop, called GooredFix.txt).
Check Hard Disk For Errors:

Press Start->Run, then copy/paste the following command into the box and press OK:

cmd /c chkdsk c: |find /v "percent" >> "%userprofile%\desktop\checkhd.txt"

A blank command window will open on your desktop, then close in a few minutes. This is normal.
A file icon named checkhd.txt should appear on your Desktop. Please post the contents of this file.

Also was that scan supposed to take only like five seconds?

Aye, that is fine.

The check-disk and online scan will probably take some time, do not be alarmed this is normal.
