No updates will install on my computer. It says they have been received but won't install for Windows or any other program. Help would greatly be appreciated.

The HiJackThis log is useless to us. Please specify which operating system you are using. What 'other" progams you are trying to update and exactly WHAT the error message is you are receiving when you try to install these updates. Other background about your computer, make/model/specs, any repair work, or other significant recent changes would also help.

I'm using Windows XP Media Center Edition 2005. This computer hasn't been used for about 2 yrs. After some wrangling I did manage to get some updates....the problem now seems to be Windows Updates. I used Windowsfixit which said it repaired Windows Updates but...it will not successfully install Windows Update KB2686509. I am also unable to update Norton360 Premier Edition Virus&Spyware definitions. Or, Windows Defender Updates. The Message I get when updating Windows is: Some Updates Could not be Installed. When updating Norton it says it has been sucessfully completed...however Norton remains with an X over it saying I need updates. Same with Defender. Thanks so much for any help you can provide.

StarieNite, the generic message is "Some updates could not be installed." In the update history, if you delve into it further it tells you exactly what updates could not be installed and exactly what the error message was. Please take a look.

You should not have Windows Defender on your Windows XP computer along with Norton anti-virus. Please uninstall Windows Defender.

Norton issues should be taken up with Norton. That is what you pay them for. If you want my suggestion, you'll only hear me suggest you uninstall that also with extreme prejudice and install something like Microsoft Security Essentials for free.

If you are only having trouble with one update you can download and install that update manually here: http://www.microsoft...s.aspx?id=29804. You might be given more information about the problem if you attempt to do so.

Please update your computer's date and time so that it is correct. This can cause security warnings that cause failures. Then, retry the installation.

If it still fails, I have found this link for you: http://support.micro....com/kb/2686509

The patch is for a keyboard layout security issue. If you have any type of remapping or something like that is causes the update to fail with that error code. There are automated Microsoft FixIts provided at the link. Read and use them to resolve your issue.
