Cold Calling Scam

This thread's last reply is from . Advice, software, and links below may be out of date — treat specific steps and download links with caution.

Hi,

I just received a cold from someone purporting to be from BT (Britsh Telecom) telling me that I have Malware on my machine.
They then tried to get me to download software from:

Ammy.com

I couldn't tell you were the call was from except to say the caller sounded as though she was from India/Pakistan.
Hi Manicd, Unfortunately, this type of fraud-call is all too common. Here in the US we get similar scams purportedly sourced from Microsoft, or AT&T (American Telephone and Telegraph) Though we all have differing strategies for dealing with such fraud, it is most important to avoid providing the caller with any additional personally identifying information. I'll move your Topic to "Discussions" Forum as it is not specifically a windows technical issue. Thanks for being concerned enough to bring this problem to wider attention. Best Regards
As long as you know these things exist, you can actually have a bit of fun, pretend to know nothing, they will try to stitch you up, but in the process you need to be ready with comebacks to their comments, my favorite is if they try saying they are your isp, or they got a mail from you or similar, ask them who you are with, ask them specific details about you, then when they try to say yes but we are trying to remove your infections etc, say how do they know your infected, and again press for details about you, obviously you NEVER give out any real info, another one you can do, either on it's own, or when doing all this, is say you just got to go and do something, place the phone down and just leave them hanging, the longer they wait the more it costs them lol.

You can always wind them up easily with a nonsense error, assuming they want you to click this that or the other, just say you get the following error each time, but say it in phonetics, say you can't make out the word, but spell it to them, get them to write it down to see if they can identify the error message as you've never seen it before, you should spell as follows:-
Uniform
Romeo
Alpha
November
India
Delta
1 (the number one)
0 (the number zero)
Tango
Echo
Romeo
Romeo
Oscar
Romeo

See how far you get with this before they ring off rofl.
paws is putting his po face on (just for a moment!)

Remember that these sort of folks are "not nice people….."

They make their money from "conning" the old, the vulnerable, and the weak.

They are working sometimes from a list of phone numbers taken directly from the phone book…so (in the UK) they will have your name, full address and telephone number…

They have friends and associates who operate in different parts of the country…..and are also generally "not nice people……"

If you and your family are strong, well protected, and have no vulnerabilities at all, then you will have little to worry about……

However:

If you have any vulnerabilities at all…… (Fire up your favourite search engine and check yourself and your family……..check the phone book listing….. are you on the electroral role?, Have you ever sought planning permission for a house alteration? hold any public office? been photographed by the press? are a director or officer of a company?….. have a web site with your name somewhere on it?….. ever used any social networking sites?…..etc etc etc)

Then I recommend that you adopt caution in dealing with these folks……

Mixing or having "sport" with "not very nice people" can be a practice that is not without risk……

If in doubt say:

"I'm sorry but I don't have a computer….I think you must have the wrong number"
…… you can repeat this if necessary and then hang up.

Stay safe
(paws now removes his po face!)
Regards to all.
That is all very true paws, but in all the phone scams in the UK, I have never heard of any physical contact, often (as said above) they are made from another country, and in the UK there are opt out options, where you can enter your details on a register, and then those who use cold calling are no longer allowed to ring you, in fact I think they can be done for it in the extreme, mind you this is just genuine cold calling, not scams, but when you get such calls here you simply state your opted out, or ex-directory to not get such calls, then ask them to remove you from their list, and by law they must comply.
But again only non scams would comply, but due to these options cold callers are using a new system to get round it, they are simply using random diallers, so they never know any details, except for the fact you answer the phone, this can be easily proved if they can't give you any of your details, such as name.

IMHO the dangerous ones are those who come to your door, and these can be seriously dangerous, even for those not so vulnerable such as the elderly etc, and as soon as these people get their hooks into you then your done, and these you don't mess with, and even the phone ones you don't swap insults with, just say your ringing the police and hang up if it gets to that stage, but phone scams are gutless chancers, who are too lazy to do any form of research, in other parts of the world this may differ, and if in such an area your bang on the money, get off the phone as soon as you know it's a scam, but if in doubt then defo just hang up and ignore them.

Here are some UK sites you can use to opt out from various phone, email and postal mail registers which should help seriously reduce these things, they may take a month or so to get up to full speed, as it can only act from the date you start them, they can't stop stuff already in the system, but again only law abiding places will comply, but within these there is a host of info and advice.
Personally you can google me to the end of the earth, I am so security aware you wont find me anywhere except from my username, but to add a major source of where these people get your details from, they are from not looking at the check boxes in online forms etc, so those unaware need educating in watching out for the small check boxed etc that nearly always get sold on to generate more income for that marketer or the like.

The Information Commissioner’s Office is the UK’s independent authority set up to uphold information rights in the public interest
The Telephone Preference Service (TPS) is a free service. It is the official central opt out register
Rules on email marketing, What do they mean for individuals?
Royal Mail's Door-to-Door Opt-Out
Stop your junk mail! (theres a bit of crossover with the previous link with this one)
Thank you to everyone for their input; I hope this serves as a warning to others here in the UK.
